In the year 2022 an upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is planned to increase the luminosity such that an integrated luminosity of Lint∼3000fb−1 can be accumulated by 2030 1. The radiation ...damage of the present inner tracker at this date and the high track density of the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) require an upgrade of the inner tracker of the ATLAS (A Toroidal LHC ApparatuS) experiment. A new integration concept will be used: the readout electronics is directly glued on the strip surface of the silicon sensors and the sensors are glued to a support structure. For the barrel region this structure is referred to as a Stave and for the end-cap region it is referred to as a Petal. For tests a smaller version, the Petalet, will be build with two design concepts. In this article the construction method is explained and first hybrid test results for one Petalet sensor are presented.
For the Phase-II Upgrade of the ATLAS detector (The ATLAS Collaboration, 2008 1), a new, all-silicon tracker will be constructed in order to cope with the increased track density and radiation level ...of the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider. While silicon strip sensors are designed to minimise the fraction of dead material and maximise the active area of a sensor, concessions must be made to the requirements of operating a sensor in a particle physics detector. Sensor geometry features like the punch-through protection deviate from the standard sensor architecture and thereby affect the charge collection in that area. In order to study the signal collection of n+-p−-p+ silicon strip sensors over their punch-through-protection area, ATLAS silicon strip sensors were scanned with a micro-focused X-ray beam at the Diamond Light Source. Due to the highly focused X-ray beam (2×3μm2) and the short average path length of an electron after interaction with an X-ray photon (≤2μm), local signal collection in different sensor areas can be studied with high resolution. This study presents results of high resolution 2D-scans of the punch-through protection region of ATLAS silicon micro-strip sensors, showing how far the strip signal collection area extends towards the bias ring and how the region is affected by radiation damage.
•Silicon strip sensors do not collect charge beyond the end of the implant.•Unirradiated and irradiated sensors show the same behaviour.•No charge is collected beneath the sensor bias ring.
For the High-Luminosity Upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, the ATLAS Inner Detector will be replaced with a new, all-silicon tracker (ITk). In order to minimise the amount of material in ...the ITk, circuit boards with readout electronics will be glued onto the active area of the sensor. Several adhesives, investigated to be used for the construction of detector modules, were found to become fluorescent when exposed to UV light. These adhesives could become a light source in the high-radiation environment of the ATLAS detector. The effect of fluorescent material covering the sensor surface in a high-radiation environment has been studied for a silicon micro-strip sensor using a micro-focused X-ray beam. By positioning the beam parallel to the sensor surface and pointing it both inside the sensor and above the sensor surface inside the deposited glue, the sensor responses from direct hits and fluorescence can be compared with high precision. This contribution presents a setup to study the susceptibility of silicon strip sensors to light contamination from fluorescent materials and shows their impact on the noise and fake signal rate of a sensor operated in a high-radiation environment.
This contribution aims to give a basic overview of the latest results regarding the production of resonances in different collision systems. The results were extracted from experimental data ...collected with HADES that is a multipurpose detector located at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum, Darmstadt. The main points discussed here are: the properties of the strange resonances Λ(1405) and Σ(1385), the role of Δ’s as a source of pions in the final state, the production dynamics reflected in form of differential cross sections, and the role of the ϕ meson as a source for K− particles.
In this paper we report on the investigation of baryonic resonance production in proton-proton collisions at the kinetic energies of 1.25 GeV and 3.5 GeV, based on data measured with HADES. Exclusive ...channels npπ+ and ppπ0 as well as ppe+e− were studied simultaneously in the framework of a one-boson exchange model. The resonance cross sections were determined from the one-pion channels for Δ(1232) and N(1440) (1.25 GeV) as well as further Δ and N* resonances up to 2 GeV/c2 for the 3.5 GeV data. The data at 1.25 GeV energy were also analysed within the framework of the partial wave analysis together with the set of several other measurements at lower energies. The obtained solutions provided the evolution of resonance production with the beam energy, showing a sizeable non-resonant contribution but with still dominating contribution of Δ(1232)P33. In the case of 3.5 GeV data, the study of the ppe+e− channel gave the insight on the Dalitz decays of the baryon resonances and, in particular, on the electromagnetic transition form-factors in the time-like region. We show that the assumption of a constant electromagnetic transition form-factors leads to underestimation of the yield in the dielectron invariant mass spectrum below the vector mesons pole. On the other hand, a comparison with various transport models shows the important role of intermediate ρ production, though with a large model dependency. The exclusive channels analysis done by the HADES collaboration provides new stringent restrictions on the parameterizations used in the models.
