. The metals ...chosen for following experiments were lead and zinc as they are known to be sensitive to volatile organic compounds. Acetic acid occurs often at indoor environment, where other pollutants may be present. The idea was to describe the influence of other pollutants on increasing the corrosion aggressivity of atmosphere contaminated by acetic acid. Synergic effect was found on lead for following pollutants: sulphur dioxide, chlorine, ammonia and nitrogen oxides. And on zinc the found pollutants are: sodium chloride, sulphur dioxide, chlorine, hydrogen sulphide and nitrogen oxides.
The serotonergic system is involved in the pathophysiology of major depression as well as in the early central nervous system development and adult neuroplasticity. The aim of the study was to ...examine in 77 patients with major depression and 77 healthy controls the association between the triallelic polymorphism in the promoter region of the serotonin transporter gene (5-HTTLPR) and gray matter (GM) brain volumes measured with 1.5 T magnetic resonance imaging. Voxel-based morphometry were estimated on magnetic resonance images and genotyping was performed. We found that healthy controls have a strong association between the 5-HTTLPR and GM volumes of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, left anterior gyrus cinguli, left amygdala as well as right hippocampus, whereas there is no such association in patients with major depression. Healthy subjects carrying the S- or L(G)-allele have smaller GM volumes than those with the L(A)-allele, indicating that 5-HTTLPR contributes to the development of brain structures. Patients with depression show reduced GM volumes, particularly when they are homozygous for the L(A)-allele, suggesting that these patients are more vulnerable for morphological changes during depressive episodes.
Rituximab has been shown to improve response rates and progression free survival when added to chemotherapy in patients with indolent and mantle cell lymphoma. However, the impact of R on overall ...survival (OS) when given in combination with chemotherapy (R-chemo) has remained unclear so far.
We thus performed a comprehensive systematic review in this group of patients to compare R-chemo with chemotherapy alone with respect to OS. Other endpoints were overall response rate (ORR), toxicity and disease control as assessed by measures such as time to treatment failure (TTF), event free-survival (EFS), progression free-survival (PFS) and time to progression (TTP).
We searched the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) (The Cochrane Library), MEDLINE, EMBASE and conference proceeding from 1990 to 2005.
Only randomised controlled trials (RCT) comparing R-chemo with chemotherapy alone in patients with newly diagnosed or relapsed indolent lymphoma and mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) were included.
Two review authors extracted data and assessed the study quality. Number needed to treat (NNT) were calculated to facilitate interpretation.
Seven randomised controlled trials involving 1943 patients with follicular lymphoma, mantle cell lymphoma, or other indolent lymphomas were included in the meta-analysis. Five studies were published as full-text articles, and two were in abstract form. Patients treated with R-chemo had better overall survival (hazard ratio HR for mortality 0.65; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.54 to 0.78), overall response (relative risk of tumour response 1.21; 95% CI 1.16 to 1.27), and disease control (HR of disease event 0.62; 95% CI 0.55 to 0.71) than patients treated with chemotherapy alone. R-chemo improved overall survival in patients with follicular lymphoma (HR for mortality 0.63; 95% CI 0.51 to 0.79) and in patients with mantle cell lymphoma (HR for mortality 0.60; 95% CI 0.37 to 0.98). However, in the latter case, there was heterogeneity among the trials (P 0.07), making the survival benefit less reliable.
The systematic review demonstrated improved OS for patients with indolent lymphoma, particularly in the subgroups of follicular and in mantle cell lymphoma when treated with R-chemo compared to chemotherapy alone.
Breast cancer constitutes about one-quarter of all cancers and is the leading cause of cancer death in women. To reduce breast cancer mortality, mammographic screening programmes have been ...implemented in many Western countries. However, these programmes remain controversial because of the associated radiation exposure and the need for improvement in terms of diagnostic accuracy. Phase-contrast imaging is a new X-ray-based technology that has been shown to provide enhanced soft-tissue contrast and improved visualization of cancerous structures. Furthermore, there is some indication that these improvements of image quality can be maintained at reduced radiation doses. Thus, X-ray phase-contrast mammography may significantly contribute to advancements in early breast cancer diagnosis. Feasibility studies of X-ray phase-contrast breast CT have provided images that allow resolution of the fine structure of tissue that can otherwise only be obtained by histology. This implies that X-ray phase-contrast imaging may also lead to the development of entirely new (micro-) radiological applications. This review provides a brief overview of the physical characteristics of this new technology and describes recent developments towards clinical implementation of X-ray phase-contrast imaging of the breast.
Age has been reported to influence amplitude and latency of the P300 potential. Nevertheless, it is not yet fully understood which brain regions are responsible for these effects. The aim of this ...study was to investigate age-effects on the P300 potential and the simultaneously acquired BOLD signal of functional MRI. 32 healthy male subjects were investigated using an auditory oddball paradigm. The functional MRI data were acquired in temporal synchrony to the task. The evoked potential data were recorded during the intervals in between MR image acquisitions in order to reduce the influence of the scanner noise on the presentation of the tones and to reduce gradient artifacts. The age-effects were calculated by means of regression analyses. In addition, brain regions modulated by the task-induced amplitude variation of the P300 were identified (single trial analysis). The results indicated an age effect on the P300 amplitude. Younger subjects demonstrated increased parietal P300 amplitudes and increased BOLD responses in a network of brain regions including the anterior and posterior cingulate cortex, the insula, the temporo-parietal junction, the superior temporal gyrus, the caudate body, the amygdala and the parahippocampal gyrus. Single trial coupling of EEG and fMRI indicated that P300 amplitudes were predominantly associated with neural responses in the anterior cingulate cortex, the putamen and temporal brain areas. Taken together, the results indicate diminished neural responses in older compared to younger subjects especially in frontal, temporo-parietal and subcortical brain regions.

One of the primary age-related changes to collagenous tissues is the increased concentration of advanced glycation endproducts (AGEs). Although AGEs have been shown to increase the mechanical ...stiffness of many tissues, their influence on the mechanical properties of the annulus fibrosus has not been measured experimentally. In previous theoretical work, we hypothesized that the mechanical influence of AGEs on the annulus could be represented in an additive strain energy function with a separate crosslinking term, but the material coefficients associated with this term were not correlated with AGE concentration. In the current study, we measured the tensile stress–strain response of the human annulus in the axial direction both before and after glycation with methylglyoxal. Using nonlinear regression, the strain energy function was simultaneously applied to these new data and to data from a wide range of experimental protocols reported in the literature to determine values for the material coefficients appearing in the constitutive equation. Nonenzymatic collagen crosslinking induced a statistically significant change in annular material properties. Furthermore, the concentration of AGEs correlated positively with the material coefficients found in the terms of the strain energy function that we associate with collagen crosslinking. These data suggest that AGEs contribute to age-related disc stiffening as well as validate the hypothesis that biochemical constituents can be related mathematically to tissue behavior. In the future, this structurally guided constitutive relationship may provide further insight into the structure–function relationships of the annulus fibrosus.
Lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma (LPL) is an indolent lymphoma with moderate sensitivity to conventional chemotherapy. This study investigated whether the addition of rituximab to standard chemotherapy ...improves treatment outcome in LPL and the subgroup of LPL patients fulfilling the criteria of Waldenstroem's macroglobulinemia (WM). A total of 69 patients with previously untreated LPL were enrolled into the trial; 64 patients were evaluable for treatment outcome. In all, 48 of the 64 LPL patients fulfilled the criteria of WM. Patients were randomly assigned to R-CHOP (rituximab, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine and prednisone, n=34) or CHOP (n=30). R-CHOP resulted in significantly higher overall response (OR) rate (94 vs 67%, P=0.0085) in the LPL patients and in the WM subgroup (91 vs 60%, P=0.0188). With a median observation time of 42 months, R-CHOP induced a significantly longer time to treatment failure (TTF) with a median of 63 months for R-CHOP vs 22 months in the CHOP arm in the LPL patients (P=0.0033) and in the WM subgroup (P=0.0241). There was no major difference of treatment-associated toxicity between both treatment groups. These data indicate that the addition of rituximab to front-line chemotherapy improves treatment outcome in patients with LPL or WM.
Abstract Forty Untreated high-risk (HR) individuals for psychosis and 75 healthy control subjects (HC) matched for age, gender, handedness and educational level were investigated by structural MRI. ...HR subjects were recruited at the Early Detection and Intervention Centre for Mental Crises (FETZ) of the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, Ludwig-Maximilians-University, Germany. Measurements of gray matter volumes were performed by voxel-based morphometry using SPM5. The sample of HR subjects showed GM volume reductions in frontal, lateral temporal and medial temporal regions compared to the healthy control group. These regions are compatible with structural findings in the clinically apparent disease of schizophrenia.
To compare an isotropic three-dimensional (3D) high-resolution T2-weighted (w) MR sequence and its reformations with conventional sequences for imaging of the cervical spine. Fifteen volunteers were ...examined at 1.5 T using sagittal and axial 3D T2-w, sagittal and axial 2D T2w, and axial 2D T2*w MR sequences. Axial reformations of the sagittal 3D dataset were generated (3D MPR T2w). Signal-to-noise and image homogeneity were evaluated in a phantom and in vivo. Visibility of ten anatomical structures of the cervical spine was evaluated. Artifacts were assessed. For statistical analysis, Cohen’s kappa, Wilcoxon matched pairs, and t-testing were utilized. There were no significant differences in homogeneity between the sequences. Sagittal 3D T2w enabled better delineation of nerve roots, neural foramina, and intraforaminal structures compared to sagittal 2D T2w. Axial 3D T2w and axial 3D MPR T2w resulted in superior visibility of most anatomical structures compared to axial 2D T2w and comparable results to 2D T2*w concerning the spinal cord, nerve roots, intraforaminal structures, and fat. Artifacts were most pronounced in axial 2D T2w and axial 3D T2w. Acquisition of a 3D T2w data set is feasible in the cervical spine with superior delineation of anatomical structures compared to 2D sequences.
We performed neural network clustering on dynamic contrast-enhanced perfusion magnetic resonance imaging time-series in patients with and without stroke. Minimal-free-energy vector quantization, ...self-organizing maps, and fuzzy c-means clustering enabled self-organized data-driven segmentation with respect to fine-grained differences of signal amplitude and dynamics, thus identifying asymmetries and local abnormalities of brain perfusion. We conclude that clustering is a useful extension to conventional perfusion parameter maps.
