Fluoxetine, a new serotonin uptake blocking antidepressant, was compared with amitriptyline in a double-blind study. Patients were diagnosed as having major depression, according to DSM-III criteria, ...when interviewed with the Diagnostic Interview Schedule. There was significant improvement in patient and observer ratings of depression in both groups, with no difference between groups. Recent memory improved significantly in the fluoxetine group but not in the amitriptyline group. Numbers of patients reporting side-effects were similar but the profiles of side-effects were different, with more patients on amitriptyline reporting anticholinergic and intolerable side-effects.
We present optical photometry and spectroscopy and Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) observations of the X-ray nova GRO J0422+32, obtained during outburst and its subsequent decay to ...quiescence. Although the X-ray and optical properties of GRO J0422+32 are broadly similar to those of other X-ray novae, it is unique in several respects. The unusually protracted decay to quiescence of the optical light curve has been punctuated by at least two minioutbursts of approximately 4 mag. The BATSE and optical outbursts are each separated by approximately 120 days. We find that the optical luminosity of GRO J0422+32 during the primary outburst is dominated by reprocessing of E greater than 10 keV X-rays. In contrast, the optical minioutbursts are most likely generated by an intrinsically bright disk rather than X-ray reprocessing: they do not appear to have any X-ray counterparts. Extremely broad (up to 6000 km/s FWZI) absorption lines have also been observed during both primary outbursts and minioutbursts. During the second minioutburst, H-alpha and H-beta emission was observed superposed on redshifted absorption features. We find that the interoutburst light curve of GRO J0422+32 may be inconsistent with an accretion disk instability as the origin of the minioutbursts. Finally, a transient 5.1/10.2 hr modulation, which may be related to the orbital period, has been observed during roughly half of our observations. However, confirmation of the orbital period must await observations in quiescence.
The effect of cimetidine and ranitidine on doxepin pharmacokinetics was studied in 6 healthy volunteers. Each subject completed 3 study phases: Treatment A, 9 consecutive doses of 50 mg doxepin (once ...daily); Treatment B, same as Treatment A but co-administration of cimetidine 600 mg b.i.d. starting after the sixth doxepin dose and continuing until approximately 2 days following discontinuation of doxepin administration; Treatment C, identical to Treatment B but with ranitidine 150 mg b.i.d. instead of cimetidine. Unlike ranitidine, cimetidine co-administration resulted in a significant increase in steady state plasma levels of doxepin (4.7, 9.0 and 4.5 ng/ml during Treatments A, B and C respectively) but not desmethyldoxepin (4.1, 4.6 and 4.2 ng/ml during Treatments A, B and C respectively). Elimination half-lives of doxepin and desmethyldoxepin were prolonged by cimetidine co-administration (19.6 and 26.2 h respectively), but remained unchanged during the ranitidine treatment phase (13.3 and 18.4 h) as compared to the control phase i.e. Treatment A (13.2 and 19.0 h). These results show that cimetidine, unlike ranitidine, significantly inhibits the biotransformation of doxepin. This data has clinical implications when the co-administration of tricylic antidepressants and H2-receptor antagonists are indicated.

An FPGA-based digital-receiver has been developed for a low-frequency imaging radio interferometer, the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA). The MWA, located at the Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory ...(MRO) in Western Australia, consists of 128 dual-polarized aperture-array elements (tiles) operating between 80 and 300\,MHz, with a total processed bandwidth of 30.72 MHz for each polarization. Radio-frequency signals from the tiles are amplified and band limited using analog signal conditioning units; sampled and channelized by digital-receivers. The signals from eight tiles are processed by a single digital-receiver, thus requiring 16 digital-receivers for the MWA. The main function of the digital-receivers is to digitize the broad-band signals from each tile, channelize them to form the sky-band, and transport it through optical fibers to a centrally located correlator for further processing. The digital-receiver firmware also implements functions to measure the signal power, perform power equalization across the band, detect interference-like events, and invoke diagnostic modes. The digital-receiver is controlled by high-level programs running on a single-board-computer. This paper presents the digital-receiver design, implementation, current status, and plans for future enhancements.
Microwave bandpass filters constructed from materials exhibiting some nonlinearity, such as superconductors, will generate intermodulation distortion (IMD) when subjected to signals at more than one ...frequency. In commercial applications of superconductive receive filters, it is possible for IMD to be generated when a weak receive signal mixes with very strong out-of-band signals, such as those coming from the transmitter. A measurement procedure was developed and data were taken on several different types of superconducting bandpass filters, all developed for commercial application. It was found that in certain interference situations, the 3-tone mixing can produce a spur that is noticeable by the receiver, but that there are simple preventative design solutions.
In this paper we explore for the first time the relative magnitudes of three fundamental sources of uncertainty, namely, foreground contamination, thermal noise and sample variance in detecting the ...HI power spectrum from the Epoch of Reionization (EoR). We derive limits on the sensitivity of a Fourier synthesis telescope to detect EoR based on its array configuration and a statistical representation of images made by the instrument. We use the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) configuration for our studies. Using a unified framework for estimating signal and noise components in the HI power spectrum, we derive an expression for and estimate the contamination from extragalactic point-like sources in three-dimensional k-space. Sensitivity for EoR HI power spectrum detection is estimated for different observing modes with MWA. With 1000 hours of observing on a single field using the 128-tile MWA, EoR detection is feasible (S/N > 1 for \(k\lesssim 0.8\) Mpc\(^{-1}\)). Bandpass shaping and refinements to the EoR window are found to be effective in containing foreground contamination, which makes the instrument tolerant to imaging errors. We find that for a given observing time, observing many independent fields of view does not offer an advantage over a single field observation when thermal noise dominates over other uncertainties in the derived power spectrum.
