The objective of this study was to characterize phosphate adsorption onto synthetic 2-lines ferrihydrite using surface analysis by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy and batch experiments. Surface analysis of ferrihydrite samples before phosphate sorption gives very reproducible Fe:O surface ratios of (1:3±0.1). Phosphate sorption onto ferrihydrite was investigated by means of pH, initial phosphate concentration, and ionic strength effects. Additionally, potential background electrolyte influence on phosphate adsorption was also determined. Phosphate uptake by ferrihydrite significantly increases with decreasing pH, with a maximum uptake of 104.8mgPO4g−1 obtained at pH=4. Phosphate removal increases with the enhancement of ionic strength in agreement with the formation of inner-sphere complexes. The presence of chloride, nitrate, and sulfate showed no competing effect on phosphate removal efficiency. Sorption kinetics follow a pseudo-second order model (R2>0.99) and the Freundlich isotherm model adequately describes sorption (R2=0.995). The careful examination of high resolution Fe 2p, O 1s, and P 2p spectra before and after phosphate sorption allows the characterization of the modifications occurring onto the ferrihydrite surface. The binding energy of the P 2p peak agrees well with that observed in Fe-PO4 compounds. Additionally, binding energy shifts in the Fe 2p spectra combined to variations in the relative intensity of the components in the high resolution O 1s spectra illustrate well the formation of chemical bonding between iron and phosphate anions at the ferrihydrite surface.
Genetic deletion studies have shown that haploinsufficiency of Delta-like ligand (Dll) 4, a transmembrane ligand for the Notch family of receptors, results in major vascular defects and embryonic ...lethality. To better define the role of Dll4 during vascular growth and differentiation, we selected the postnatal retina as a model because its vasculature develops shortly after birth in a highly stereotypic manner, during which time it is accessible to experimental manipulation. We report that Dll4 expression is dynamically regulated by VEGF in the retinal vasculature, where it is most prominently expressed at the leading front of actively growing vessels. Deletion of a single Dll4 allele or pharmacologic inhibition of Dll4/Notch signaling by intraocular administration of either soluble Dll4-Fc or a blocking antibody against Dll4 all produced the same set of characteristic abnormalities in the developing retinal vasculature, most notably enhanced angiogenic sprouting and increased endothelial cell proliferation, resulting in the formation of a denser and more highly interconnected superficial capillary plexus. In a model of ischemic retinopathy, Dll4 blockade also enhanced angiogenic sprouting and regrowth of lost retinal vessels while suppressing ectopic pathological neovascularization. Our data demonstrate that Dll4 is induced by VEGF as a negative feedback regulator and acts to prevent overexuberant angiogenic sprouting, promoting the timely formation of a well differentiated vascular network.

Multiple classes of commercially important auxin herbicides have been discovered since the 1940s including the aryloxyacetates (2,4-D, MCPA, dichlorprop, mecoprop, triclopyr, and ...fluroxypyr), the benzoates (dicamba), the quinoline-2-carboxylates (quinclorac and quinmerac), the pyrimidine-4-carboxylates (aminocyclopyrachlor), and the pyridine-2-carboxylates (picloram, clopyralid, and aminopyralid). In the last 10 years, two novel pyridine-2-carboxylate (or picolinate) herbicides were discovered at Dow AgroSciences. This paper will describe the structure activity relationship study that led to the discovery of the 6-aryl-picolinate herbicides Arylex™ active (2005) and Rinskor™ active (2010). While Arylex was developed primarily for use in cereal crops and Rinskor is still in development primarily for use in rice crops, both herbicides will also be utilized in additional crops.
Abstract
The Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME) has become a leading facility for detecting fast radio bursts (FRBs) through the CHIME/FRB backend. CHIME/FRB searches for fast ...transients in polarization-summed intensity data streams that have 24 kHz spectral and 1 ms temporal resolution. The intensity beams are pointed to predetermined locations in the sky. A triggered baseband system records the coherent electric field measured by each antenna in the CHIME array at the time of FRB detections. Here we describe the analysis techniques and automated pipeline developed to process these full-array baseband data recordings. Whereas the real-time FRB detection pipeline has a localization limit of several arcminutes, offline analysis of baseband data yields source localizations with subarcminute precision, as characterized by using a sample of pulsars and one repeating FRB with known positions. The baseband pipeline also enables resolving temporal substructure on a microsecond scale and the study of polarization including detections of Faraday rotation.

Using commissioning data from the first year of operation of the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment’s (CHIME) Pulsar backend system, we conduct a systematic analysis of the ...Faraday Rotation Measure (RM) of the Northern hemisphere pulsars detected by CHIME. We present 55 new RMs as well as obtain improved RM uncertainties for 25 further pulsars. CHIME’s low observing frequency and wide bandwidth between 400 and 800 MHz contribute to the precision of our measurements, whereas the high cadence observation provides extremely high signal-to-noise co-added data. Our results represent a significant increase of the pulsar RM census, particularly regarding the Northern hemisphere. These new RMs are for sources that are located in the Galactic plane out to 10 kpc, as well as off the plane to a scale height of ∼16 kpc. This improved knowledge of the Faraday sky will contribute to future Galactic large-scale magnetic structure and ionosphere modelling.
To evaluate the predictive impact of chromosome 1p/19q deletions on the response and outcome of progressive low-grade gliomas (LGG) treated with up-front temozolomide (TMZ) chemotherapy.
Adult ...patients with measurable, progressive LGG (WHO grade II) treated with TMZ delivered at the conventional schedule (200 mg/m(2)/day for 5 consecutive days, repeated every 28 days) were retrospectively evaluated for response by central review of MRI-s. Chromosome 1p and 19q deletions were detected by the loss of the heterozygosity technique (LOH).
A total of 149 consecutive patients were included in this retrospective, single center observational study. The median number of TMZ cycles delivered was 14 (range 2 to 30). Seventy-seven patients (53%) experienced an objective response (including 22 15% cases of partial response and 55 38% cases of minor response), 55 (37%) patients had stable disease, and 14 (10%) had a progressive disease. The median time to maximum tumor response was 12 months (range 3 to 30 months). The median progression-free survival (PFS) was 28 months (95% CI: 23.4 to 32.6). Material for genotyping was available for 86 patients. Combined 1p/19q LOH was present in 42% of the cases and was significantly associated with a higher rate (p = 0.02) and longer objective response to chemotherapy (p = 0.017), and both longer PFS (p = 4.10(-5)) and overall survival (p = 0.04).
Low-grade gliomas respond to temozolomide and loss of chromosome 1p/19q predicts both a durable chemosensitivity and a favorable outcome.

The Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME)/FRB experiment has detected thousands of fast radio bursts (FRBs) due to its sensitivity and wide field of view; however, its low ...angular resolution prevents it from localizing events to their host galaxies. Very long baseline interferometry (VLBI), triggered by FRB detections from CHIME/FRB will solve the challenge of localization for non-repeating events. Using a refurbished 10 m radio dish at the Algonquin Radio Observatory located in Ontario Canada, we developed a testbed for a VLBI experiment with a theoretical

≲ 30 mas. We provide an overview of the 10 m system and describe its refurbishment, the data acquisition, and a procedure for fringe fitting that simultaneously estimates the geometric delay used for localization and the dispersive delay from the ionosphere. Using single pulses from the Crab pulsar, we validate the system and localization procedure, and analyze the clock stability between sites, which is critical for coherently delay referencing an FRB event. We find a localization of ∼200 mas is possible with the performance of the current system (single-baseline). Furthermore, for sources with insufficient signal or restricted wideband to simultaneously measure both geometric and ionospheric delays, we show that the differential ionospheric contribution between the two sites must be measured to a precision of 1 × 10
−8
pc cm
−3
to provide a reasonable localization from a detection in the 400–800 MHz band. Finally we show detection of an FRB observed simultaneously in the CHIME and the Algonquin 10 m telescope, the first non-repeating FRB in this long baseline. This project serves as a testbed for the forthcoming CHIME/FRB Outriggers project.
The adsorption of carboxylate collectors is largely assumed to be affected by the monazite surface speciation. In order to provide key information for the understanding of this phenomenon, we propose ...in this study a thermodynamic model for the equilibrium of monazite-(La) crystal in an H2O-CO2 system. This model allows access to the speciation information of the dissolved lattice species. Based on this model, we identify potential chemical reactions that may affect, under certain conditions, lanthanide ions on monazite surface. Since these surface ions have vacant coordination sites, they may react with water molecules and media species to restore their coordination shells. Therefore, it has been suggested that surface lanthanide ions undergo hydroxylation and carbonation reactions under alkaline conditions.
X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy were used to analyse synthetic monazite-(La) samples treated in deionised water or sodium carbonate solutions. The spectroscopy results suggest that surface lanthanide ions do tend to hydroxylate under alkaline conditions. Furthermore, under the tested conditions, no significant monazite surface carbonation was observed. These results indicate that surface lanthanide ions have limited affinity for dissolved carbonate species, contrary to what is suggested by the thermodynamic model for free lanthanide ions in the bulk.

Abstract
The Pulsar backend of the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment has monitored hundreds of known pulsars in the northern sky since fall 2018, providing a rich data set for the study ...of temporal variations in pulsar emission. Using a matched filtering technique, we report, for the first time, nulling behavior in five pulsars as well as mode switching in nine pulsars. Only one of the pulsars is observed to show both nulling and moding signals. These new nulling and mode-switching pulsars appear to come from a population with relatively long spin periods, in agreement with previous findings in the literature.
