The radio resource shortage is one of the most important characteristic to take into account when deploying modern wireless telecommunication systems. A novel communication paradigm named Cognitive ...Radio, has been introduced in the last years for better exploiting the limited available spectrum and the inefficiency in the spectrum usage. Its main aim is to allow the co-existence of different wireless systems on the same spectral resource by limiting the mutual interference. One of the main challenge is to extend the cognitive paradigm also to satellite networks by considering hybrid satellite and terrestrial scenarios. Aim of this paper is to evaluate the coexistence of terrestrial and satellite networks by considering a cognitive approach when radio resource sharing is employed. The paper deals with the presentation of a statistical interference model that aims at evaluating the mutual interference among the two systems.
In this paper, we propose a novel unified analytical framework for the analysis of channel capacity over fading channels, which exploits the flexibility and generality of the well-known moment ...generating function (MGF-) based approach, instead of the usual probability density function (PDF-) based one. In particular, we will introduce a novel transform operator called E i -transform, and show that channel capacity with side information at the receiver and side information at the transmitter and receiver can be readily expressed as the E i -transform of the first derivative of the MGF of the received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in the former case, and the E i -transform of a linear combination of MGF and truncated MGF (along with their derivatives) of the received SNR in the latter case. The proposed framework turns out to be a useful technique to the analysis and computation of channel capacity in all those application scenarios in which estimating the MGF of the received SNR is much simpler than estimating the PDF. Finally, a simple numerical method, which is based on the Gauss-Chebyshev quadrature (GCQ) rule, for computing E i -transform integrals will be described, and numerical results will be shown to validate the accuracy of the proposed MGF-based approach.
Hypercholesterolemia is an important risk factor to develop acute thrombotic complications of atherosclerosis like to myocardial infarction and ischemic stroke. Platelets and coagulation factors are ...strictly involved in the genesis of such thrombotic events and their hyperactivity in hypercholesterolemic patients has been previously reported. Moreover some cholesterol-lowering molecules (statins) seem to be able of reducing platelet activity.
We performed platelet-dependent thrombin generation (colorimetric method) to assess the coagulative potential of 40 caucasian hypercholesterolemic subjects with respect to normal controls and to the grade of hypercholesterolemia. Moreover we observed the effect of platelets from hypercholesterolemics on thrombin generation in plasma from normal subjects. The effect of Cerivastatin on thrombin generation was evaluated too.
Our data show an increased thrombin generation both in mild and high hypercholesterolemic subjects with respect to controls (424.6+/-30.5 vs. 197.1+/-27.4 mIU/ml). No significant difference in the amount of thrombin generation was found between mild and high hypercholesterolemics (399.6+/-20.7 vs. 440.2+/-21.4 mIU/ml). Platelets directly influence thrombin generation and they present an intrinsic hyperactivity that can be modulated by Cerivastatin (223.6+/-24.8 vs. 424.6+/-30.5 mIU/ml).
Mild hypercholesterolemia is associated with an increased thrombinic potential that may be considered an added risk factor to develop thrombotic events. Platelets directly influences this hypercoagulative state and Cerivastatin is able to reduce thrombin generation by way of a direct interaction with platelets.
Some alleles of milk protein loci are associated with superior cheese production characteristics. The genetic polymorphism of the milk protein loci alphas1-casein, beta-casein, k-casein and ...beta-lactoglobulin was examined in Argentinian Holstein cattle. Samples from 12 herds of four regions of Córdoba were analyzed by starch gel electrophoresis. The chi² test was used to assess whether the populations were in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. Genotypic diversity was analyzed by the Shannon-Weaver index. The observed genotypic frequencies were analyzed by Hedrick's genetic identity and the genetic distance of Balakrishnan and Sanghvi. The allelic and genotypic frequencies were similar to those of other Holstein populations. The genotypic frequencies of the alphas1-casein and beta-casein loci were in equilibrium, whereas in some populations the k-casein and beta-lactoglobulin loci were not. According to the Shannon-Weaver index the total genetic diversity within each herd was greater than 96%. The high values of identity agreed with the low genetic distances among populations. We conclude that there is extensive genetic homogeneity in Holstein cattle in Córdoba Province and that it would be feasible to select for B alleles at the k-casein and b-lactoglobulin loci in order to improve the quality of milk available for cheese manufacturing.
Alguns alelos de locos de proteínas do leite associam-se com produção mais elevada de queijo. O polimorfismo genético dos locos das proteínas do leite alfas1-caseína, beta-caseína, k-caseína e beta-lactoglobulina foi examinado em gado Holstein argentino. Amostras de 12 rebanhos de quatro regiões de Córdoba foram analisados por eletroforese em gel de amido. O teste do chi² foi usado para avaliar se as populações estavam em equilíbrio de Hardy-Weinberg. A diversidade genotípica foi analisada pelo índice de Shannon-Weaver. As freqüências genotípicas observadas foram analisadas pela identidade genética de Hedrick e pela distância genética de Balakrishnan e Sanghvi. As freqüências alélicas e genotípicas foram semelhantes às de outras populações de Holstein. As freqüências genotípicas dos locos de alfas1-caseína e beta-caseína estavam em equilíbrio, enquanto que em algumas populações os locos de k-caseína e beta-lactoglobulina não estavam. De acordo com o índice de Shannon-Weaver a diversidade genética total dentro de cada rebanho foi maior que 96%. Os altos valores de identidade concordaram com as pequenas distâncias genéticas entre as populações. Concluímos que há extensa homogeneidade genética no gado Holstein na Província de Córdoba e que seria factível selecionar os alelos B nos locos de k-caseína e beta-lactoglobulina de modo a melhorar a qualidade do leite disponível para a manufatura de queijo.
This paper describes the Multimedia Educational Pills (MEPs) model. MEPs are highly concentrated courses, designed to address a topic through multiple representations, following a recursive, ...non-cumulative, logic, as pointed out by the Cognitive Flexibility Theory (CFT) methodology. MEPs have been designed to meet the educational challenges posed by the transition from an industrial to an information age. They focus on promoting the capacity to deal with uncertainties and solve problems in an adaptive way. Variety is the key to the architecture and the main benefit of applying MEPS. In fact, MEPS are made up of multiple resources. Each learning object has its own particular shape, perspective and conceptual dimension. In addition, the MEPS are designed to be used in multiple ways, such as e-learning, classroom, blended learning, and to be accessible on multiple devices. MEPs can support multiple teaching strategies (such as self-training, cooperative learning) and multiple learning architectures. In particular MEPs - used before or as follow-up -- can integrate and improve traditional classrooms. Finally MEPs can be used in support of coaching paths or in support of outdoor training paths.
In this paper, we analyze the performance of a particular class of Transmitted-Reference (TR) receiver for Impulse Radio (IR) Ultra Wide Band (UWB) communication systems, which is called Chip-Time ...Differential Transmitted- Reference (T C -DTR). The analysis aims at investigating the performance of this receiver in the presence of faded narrow- band interference, and at comparing it with other TR receiver schemes proposed in the literature. It is shown that T c -DTR receivers can offer a substantial performance gain with respect to other non-coherent receiver architectures, provided that some optimization conditions on code design are satisfied. Guidelines for optimal code and system optimization to reject narrow-band interference are provided in the present manuscript, as well as their effect on system performance. Numerical simulations are also shown to substantiate findings and analytical derivations.

Human dentin consists of protein and mineral phases in the form of a collagen network reinforced with apatite. The bonding of materials to dentin, an important goal of dental materials research, can ...be achieved by the reaction of adhesion promoters with either of these phases. Our group is concerned with such bonding, and has used surface-sensitive instrumentation to elucidate the nature of a variety of surface treatments of dentin. Here, we discuss some of our findings, with particular emphasis on the kinetics of surface demineralization and deproteination, the reaction of formaldehyde with collagen, and the reaction of organophosphate with dentin apatite. The ramifications of our findings will be examined.Key words: dentin, adhesion, vibrational spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy.
Twenty-five male patients with superficial bladder cancer underwent intravesical Bacillus Calmette Guerin immunotherapy. A high incidence of side effects has occurred using three different substrains ...of BCG. Our interest has been focused on BCG related granulomatous prostatitis: we have found four asymptomatic patients with histologically diagnosed disease. We suppose therefore that its incidence is underestimated.
