This article discusses the development of the first regional computerized database for the epidemiological evaluation of maxillofacial trauma and tests its usefulness by evaluating the ...appropriateness and completeness of the resulting information. The database was developed using Microsoft Access, implemented using Visual Basic. Data were entered in the database by 4 different maxillofacial specialists, one from each of the 4 main regional hospitals where maxillofacial trauma is treated. Clinical information was taken from 100 complete records of patients hospitalized for maxillofacial fractures at the Maxillofacial Division of San Giovanni Battista Hospital in Turin from January to June 2009.Thirteen database fields were used: general information, cause and mechanism of injury, fracture site, Facial Injury Severity Scale, head and neck examination, associated injuries, timing and type of surgery, and days of hospitalization.Overall, the data entered were 99.45% complete and 99.5% accurate. Thus, our regional maxillofacial database can be considered complete and accurate. Some of the errors, mainly in the fields "fracture site" and "Facial Injury Severity Scale," were attributable to an incorrect interpretation of facial fracture diagnoses, based on the medical records that were provided.
This study was designed to evaluate the incidence of severe ocular injuries associated to maxillofacial fractures and report their management in the Emergency Department.
Among the 1779 patients ...admitted for maxillofacial fractures, those with partial or total loss of vision at the time of emergency consultation were included in the study. Data collected from the patients' medical records included age, gender, mechanism of injury, location and type of facial fractures, type of ocular injuries and cause of blindness, methods of treatment, and days of hospitalization.
Forty patients (2.2%), 32 men and 8 women, ranging from 17 to 85 years of age, presented with severely reduced vision or blindness associated to fractures of the facial middle third with involvement of one or more orbital walls, mainly caused by motor vehicle and work accidents. In 18 patients, severe ocular injuries were determined by direct lesion of the globe, in 14 by direct or indirect traumatic optic neuropathy and in 8 by a retrobulbar hematoma. Direct lesion of the eyeball was treated by prompt repair or enucleation of the globe, though no or little recovery of vision was obtained. Ophthalmologic and/or maxillofacial treatment of the anterior compartment lesions of the eye allowed a partial or total recovery of the vision. A partial or total recovery of the vision was observed in almost all the patients with indirect traumatic optic neuropathy after administration of steroids according to NASCIS II protocol. Likewise, an evident improvement of the vision was obtained by immediate drainage of retrobulbar hematoma.
Early diagnosis of the nature of the ophthalmic injury and treatment are important, and involvement of the ophthalmologist is mandatory.

Epidermoid cysts are rare, slow-growing, benign, developmental cysts that are derived from abnormally situated ectodermal tissue. Epidermoid cysts may grow anywhere on the body and about 7% of them ...are located in the head and neck. In literature, very few epidermoid cysts have been reported in the temporal region. Histopathologically, they are lined with plain stratified keratin-producing squamous epithelium, although in some cases part of the lining is made up of mucous secreting and ciliated epithelium. This may suggest an endodermal rather than an ectodermal origin. We present and discuss the management of a patient presenting a posttraumatic epidermoid cyst of the temporal region.
In this paper, we present a discrete formulation of nonlinear shear- and torsion-free rods introduced by Gebhardt and Romero in 20 that uses isogeometric discretization and robust time integration. ...Omitting the director as an independent variable field, we reduce the number of degrees of freedom and obtain discrete solutions in multiple copies of the Euclidean space (R^3), which is larger than the corresponding multiple copies of the manifold (R^3 x S^2) obtained with standard Hermite finite elements. For implicit time integration, we choose the same integration scheme as Gebhardt and Romero in 20 that is a hybrid form of the midpoint and the trapezoidal rules. In addition, we apply a recently introduced approach for outlier removal by Hiemstra et al. 26 that reduces high-frequency content in the response without affecting the accuracy, ensuring robustness of our nonlinear discrete formulation. We illustrate the efficiency of our nonlinear discrete formulation for static and transient rods under different loading conditions, demonstrating good accuracy in space, time and the frequency domain. Our numerical example coincides with a relevant application case, the simulation of mooring lines.
The signal strength is an important parameter to be considered in a project to establish network of wireless sensors in an agricultural environment. This work aims to collect quality data signals transmitted between a base station and a sensor node located inside a greenhouse, which is an experimental field located in the College of Agricultural Engineering - UNICAMP, with the help of computational tools. After sensor node deployment, experiments were performed in order to check range and signal quality. Through these experiments, it was concluded that a radiofrequency power value of -12.2 dBm is sufficient to maintain transmissions between base station and the sensor. Tests were also performed to a radiofrequency power of -9.2 dBm, and showed that the network had quality rated as "very high". However, by testing the battery life, it is noted that there is an energy saving when the radiofrequency power of -12.2 dBm is used. It was shown that the value of the signal strength has an influence on the quality of signal transmission and reception, battery depletion and signal range.
We studied the antibiotic sensitivity of injured coliforms isolated from drinking water of La Plata, Argentina. The antibiotic sensitivity test by the agar diffusion method were proved in: Klebsiella ...oxytoca (14 strains), Enterobacter aerogenes (4 strains) and Enterobacter cloacae genomic group 3 (14 strains). We found that while these impaired total coliforms were sensitive to piperacillin‐tazobactam (TAZ), netilmicin (NTL), ofloxacin (OFLX), and norfloxacin (NFLX) (100%), they had resistant to aminopenicillin‐sulbactam (AMS) and nitrofurantoin (NIT) (100%). The resistance to antibiotics demonstrated in these strains would point to the need to promote a rational and judicious use of antimicrobial agents while at the same time implementing a program of active vigilance aimed at ensuring the highest quality of drinking water throughout the system.
The aim of this study was to perform an experimental study to evaluate the proper operation distance between the nodes of a wireless sensor network available on the market for different agricultural ...crops (maize, physic nut, eucalyptus). The experimental data of the network performance offers to farmers and researchers information that might be useful to the sizing and project of the wireless sensor networks in similar situations to those studied. The evaluation showed that the separation of the nodes depends on the type of culture and it is a critical factor to ensure the feasibility of using WSN. In the configuration used, sending packets every 2 seconds, the battery life was about four days. Therefore, the autonomy may be increased with a longer interval of time between sending packets.

Purpose: This article gives a general description of the incidence, causes, and complexity of maxillofacial fractures in the elderly and discusses whether modification is required in assessment, ...surgical indications, and techniques in such cases.
Patients and Methods: A retrospective clinical and radiologic study evaluated 222 patients older than 60 years of age (mean age, 70.3) hospitalized with maxillofacial trauma over the period 1987 to 1996 in the Division of Maxillofacial Surgery, University of Turin. The patients were classified according to the following parameters: age, cause of injury, site of trauma, presence of associated fractures, pertinent medical history, type of treatment, length of hospitalization, and complications. The data were compared with those from a control group consisting of 178 adult patients younger than 60 years of age.
Results: The presence of a preexisting systemic pathologic condition was the most important factor in determining hospitalization time, which was greater than in the control group. In 89 patients (40.1%), no treatment was considered necessary, whereas 133 patients (59.9%) were treated by surgery. In 115 patients (86.5%), the fractures were treated by open reduction and internal fixation, whereas closed reduction was used in 18 patients (13.5%). There were complications with six patients (2.7%), and one died in the hospital.
Conclusions: The findings of this study suggest that surgical intervention is less frequently indicated in facial trauma of the elderly because of physiologic, psychologic, and social changes brought on by the aging process. The principles of treatment, the results, and the complications do not differ greatly in this group when compared with the normal adult population.
