The purpose of this study was to assess the risk of zearalenone (ZEA) in corn meal produced and commercialized in State of Parana, Brazil. The extraction method carried out with a Romer Mycosep 226 ...column was found to be efficient due to addition of both diatomaceous earth and centrifuging during the cleaning step. From the total of 84 analyzed samples, 78.6% (n = 66) were found to be contaminated ZEA at levels between 15.4 and 72.1 μg/kg. This study was the first report on occurrence of positive samples for ZEA in corn meal commercialized in Parana since 2005. The estimated daily intake (EDI) of ZEA for the Brazilian population and for the State of Parana was 3.1 and 2.2 ng/kg bw/day, respectively. The EDI was below the tolerable daily intake of 250 ng/kg bw/day. Despite the low health risk of the population, it was observed that the occurrence of ZEA in corn meal was frequent, which demonstrates the importance of monitoring studies to ensure consumer's health.
Practical applications
Occurrence of zearalenone in corn meal was high (78.6%) in Brazil. First report on corn meal samples positive for zearalenone in Paraná, Brazil. No sample exceeded the tolerated limit by both Brazilian and European legislation. EDI due to corn meal consumption was inferior to TDI.
This research presents the palynostratigraphy of organic-rich shales from the Irati and the Corumbataí formations, Paraná Basin (PB), Southeastern Brazil, as part of an unconventional hydrocarbon ...source rock and CO2 reservoir assessment study. Thirty-four samples from the Corumbataí Formation and the Assistência Member of the Irati Formation were collected in the states of Goiás (northern border of the PB), São Paulo and Paraná (eastern and southern border of the PB, respectively). The acquired data allowed to establish a comprehensive palynostratigraphic study across the basin where a total of 18 pollen genera (34 pollen species), seven spore genera, four microplankton genera (1 species), and Chlorophyceae algae species where identified. The palynostratigraphic analysis also reveals a clear dominance of bisaccate pollen grains such as Corisaccites alutas, Lueckisporites virkkiae, and Weylandites lucifer. The Lueckisporites virkkiae zone was identified in the upper part of the Irati Formation (Assistência Member) and the lowermost part of the Corumbataí Formation, indicating a Kungurian to Roadian age for this part of the succession. Differences in the Guttulapollenites hannonicus and Tornopollenites toreutos biostratigraphic ranges, recovered in the Corumbataí Formation, suggest an earlier development of these species in the Paraná Basin during the middle Permian. Therefore, to evaluate the differences in the first occurrences of key species within the Paraná Basin, a close palynostratigraphic correlation between the main Guadalupian-Lopingian South American Gondwana basins is tentatively established.

We present a study of the structural and quantum conductance properties of atomic-size copper nanowires generated by mechanical stretching. The atomistic evolution was derived from time-resolved ...electron microscopy observations and molecular dynamics simulations. We have analyzed the quantum transport behavior by means of conductance measurements and theoretical calculations. The results suggest the formation of an unusual and highly stable pentagonal Cu nanowire with a diameter of approximately 0.45 nm and approximately 4.5 conductance quanta.

Results
In the entire cohort of 287 patients, median follow-up time was 37 months, and 5-year RFS was 73%. Cox regression analysis identified four variables for inclusion in the risk score: CgA > 5x ULN (HR 4.3,

= 0.1). Each variable was assigned 1 point. Risk-score testing in the unique validation cohort of 63 patients revealed a 95% negative predictive value for recurrence in patients with zero points.
Discussion
This simple pre-operative risk scoring system resulted in a high degree of specificity for identifying patients at low-risk for tumor recurrence. This test can be utilized pre-operatively to aid informed decision-making.
The germin-like protein (GLP) purified from Thevetia peruviana, Peruvianin-I, is the only one described as having proteolytic activity. Therefore, the goal of this study was to investigate the ...structural features responsible for its enzymatic activity. Although the amino acid sequence of Peruvianin-I showed high identity with other GLPs, it exhibited punctual mutations, which were responsible for the absence of oxalate oxidase activity. The phylogenetic analysis showed that Peruvianin-I does not belong to any classification of GLP subfamilies. Moreover, Peruvianin-I contains a catalytic triad found in all plant cysteine peptidases. Molecular docking simulations confirmed the role of the catalytic triad in its proteolytic activity. Synchrotron radiation circular dichroism assays confirmed that Peruvianin-I was stable at pH ranging from 5.0 to 8.0 and that it presented significant structural changes only above 60 °C. The addition of iodoacetamide caused changes in its native conformation, but only a slight effect was observed after adding a reducing agent. This study reports an unusual protein with germin-like structure, lacking typical oxalate oxidase activity. Instead, the proteolytic activity observed suggests that the protein is a cysteine peptidase. These structural peculiarities make Peruvianin‑I an interesting model for further understanding of the action of laticifer fluids in plant defense.
Sucrose content is a highly desirable trait in sugarcane as the worldwide demand for cost-effective biofuels surges. Sugarcane cultivars differ in their capacity to accumulate sucrose and breeding ...programs routinely perform crosses to identify genotypes able to produce more sucrose. Sucrose content in the mature internodes reach around 20% of the culms dry weight. Genotypes in the populations reflect their genetic program and may display contrasting growth, development, and physiology, all of which affect carbohydrate metabolism. Few studies have profiled gene expression related to sugarcane's sugar content. The identification of signal transduction components and transcription factors that might regulate sugar accumulation is highly desirable if we are to improve this characteristic of sugarcane plants.
We have evaluated thirty genotypes that have different Brix (sugar) levels and identified genes differentially expressed in internodes using cDNA microarrays. These genes were compared to existing gene expression data for sugarcane plants subjected to diverse stress and hormone treatments. The comparisons revealed a strong overlap between the drought and sucrose-content datasets and a limited overlap with ABA signaling. Genes associated with sucrose content were extensively validated by qRT-PCR, which highlighted several protein kinases and transcription factors that are likely to be regulators of sucrose accumulation. The data also indicate that aquaporins, as well as lignin biosynthesis and cell wall metabolism genes, are strongly related to sucrose accumulation. Moreover, sucrose-associated genes were shown to be directly responsive to short term sucrose stimuli, confirming their role in sugar-related pathways.
Gene expression analysis of sugarcane populations contrasting for sucrose content indicated a possible overlap with drought and cell wall metabolism processes and suggested signaling and transcriptional regulators to be used as molecular markers in breeding programs. Transgenic research is necessary to further clarify the role of the genes and define targets useful for sugarcane improvement programs based on transgenic plants.
Bemisia tabaci is one of the most important global agricultural insect pests, being a vector of emerging plant viruses such as begomoviruses and criniviruses that cause serious problems in many ...countries. Although knowledge of the genetic diversity of B. tabaci populations is important for controlling this pest and understanding viral epidemics, limited information is available on this pest in Brazil. A survey was conducted in different locations of São Paulo and Mato Grosso states, and the phylogenetic relationships of B. tabaci individuals from 43 populations sampled from different hosts were analysed based on partial mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase 1 gene (mtCOI) sequences. According to the recently proposed classification of the B. tabaci complex, which employs the 3.5% mtCOI sequence divergence threshold for species demarcation, most of the specimens collected were found to belong to the Middle East‐Asia Minor 1 species, which includes the invasive populations of the commonly known B biotype, within the Africa/Middle East/Asia Minor high‐level group. Three specimens collected from Solanun gilo and Ipomoea sp. were grouped together and could be classified in the New World species that includes the commonly known A biotype. However, six specimens collected from Euphorbia heterophylla, Xanthium cavanillesii and Glycine maxima could not be classified into any of the 28 previously proposed species, although according to the 11% mtCOI sequence divergence threshold, they belong to the New World high‐level group. These specimens were classified into a new recently proposed species named New World 2 that includes populations from Argentina. Middle East‐Asia Minor 1, New World and New World 2 were differentiated by RFLP analysis of the mtCOI gene using TaqI enzyme. Taq I analysis in silico also differentiates these from Mediterranean species, thus making this method a convenient tool to determine population dynamics, especially critical for monitoring the presence of this exotic pest in Brazil.
Organic nitrates are widely used to restore endogenous nitric oxide (NO) levels reduced by endothelial nitric oxide synthase dysfunction. However, these drugs are associated with undesirable side ...effects, including tolerance. This study aims to investigate the cardiovascular effects of the new organic nitrate 1,3-diisobutoxypropan-2-yl nitrate (NDIBP). Specifically, we assessed its effects on blood pressure, vascular reactivity, acute toxicity, and the ability to induce tolerance. In vitro and ex vivo techniques showed that NDIBP released NO both in a cell-free system and in isolated mesenteric arteries preparations through a process catalyzed by xanthine oxidoreductase. NDIBP also evoked endothelium-independent vasorelaxation, which was significantly attenuated by 2-phenyl-4,4,5,5,-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl 3-oxide (PTIO, 300 μM), a nitric oxide scavenger; 1-H-1,2,4 oxadiazolo–4,3-aquinoxalin-1-one (ODQ, 10 μM), a soluble guanylyl cyclase inhibitor; tetraethylammonium (TEA, 3 mM), a potassium channel blocker; febuxostat (500 nM), a xanthine oxidase inhibitor; and proadifen (10 μM), an inhibitor of cytochrome P450 enzyme. Furthermore, this organic nitrate did not induce tolerance in isolated vessels and presented low toxicity following acute oral administration. In vivo changes on cardiovascular parameters were assessed using normotensive and renovascular hypertensive rats. NDIBP evoked a reduction of blood pressure that was significantly higher in hypertensive animals. Our results suggest that NDIBP acts as a NO donor, inducing blood pressure reduction without having the undesirable effects of tolerance. Those effects seem to be mediated by activation of NO-sGC-cGMP pathway and positive modulation of K+ channels in vascular smooth muscle.

Osmotin-Like Proteins (OLPs) have been purified and characterized from different plant tissues, including latex fluids. Besides its defensive role, tobacco osmotin seems to induce adiponectin-like ...physiological effects, acting as an agonist. However, molecular information about this agonistic effect on adiponectin receptors has been poorly exploited and other osmotins have not been investigated yet.
The present study involved the characterization of three OLPs from Plumeria rubra latex and molecular docking studies to evaluate the interaction between them and adiponectin receptors (AdipoR1 and AdipoR2).
P. rubra Osmotin-Like Proteins (PrOLPs) exhibited molecular masses from 21 to 25 kDa and isoelectric points ranging from 4.4 to 7.7. The proteins have 16 cysteine residues, which are involved in eight disulfide bonds, conserved in the same positions as other plant OLPs. The threedimensional (3D) models exhibited the three typical domains of OLPs, and molecular docking analysis showed that two PrOLP peptides interacted with two adiponectin receptors similarly to tobacco osmotin peptide.
As observed for tobacco osmotin, the latex osmotins of P. rubra exhibited compatible interactions with adiponectin receptors. Therefore, these plant defense proteins (without known counterparts in humans) are potential tools to study modulation of glucose metabolism in type II diabetes, where adiponectin plays a pivotal role in homeostasis.
Trypanosoma cruzi and Leishmania spp. are parasites that infect multiple hosts including canids, considered bioaccumulators of parasites. Deforestation in the Cerrado biome has resulted in the ...exposure of wild canids to anthropized areas, where they may establish ecological and epidemiological relationships with domestic dogs. We evaluated the infection by trypanosomatids in canids from a Cerrado agroecosystem between 2013 and 2017. Samples of wild canids (blood, bone marrow and skin) and dogs (blood) were collected for parasitological, serological and molecular diagnosis. A total of 414 samples from wild (n = 131) and domestic (n = 283) canids were collected, including recaptures. We obtained five positive hemocultures from Lycalopex vetulus (n = 2), Cerdocyon thous (n = 1) and dogs (n = 2), all characterized as T. cruzi TcIII/V (18S rDNA) and TcIII/V/VI (gGAPDH); one positive skin fragment for Leishmania sp. (C. thous), one positive skin culture (Chrysocyon brachyurus) and one positive fresh blood examination from a dog. Infection by T. cruzi and Leishmania spp. was serologically confirmed in 18% and 4% of the canids, respectively. Active transmission was attested by seroconversion events and occurred despite the low rate of positive parasitological assays. Wild and domestic canids infected by both parasites were detected sharing the same areas, pointing to a possible spillover of parasites among them.
