A variety of viral infections are associated with hypercoagulable states and may be linked to the development of deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. The Zika and Chikungunya viral ...infections spread through the South and Central American continents, moving to North America in 2016, with severe cases of polyarthralgia, fever, and Guillain-Barré syndrome leading eventually to death. A decreased trend for both infections was reported in the first quarter of 2017. In this article, we report the possible association of venous thromboembolic events associated with Zika infection. After 2 cases of deep venous thrombosis in patients with acute Zika infections, D-dimer levels were measured in 172 consecutive patients who presented to the emergency department of a university hospital in an endemic region of Brazil with either Zika or Chikungunya infections confirmed by polymerase chain reaction tests. D-dimer levels were increased in 19.4% of 31 patients with Zika and in 63.8% of 141 patients with Chikungunya infections. The mechanisms behind this association are yet to be elucidated as well as the potential for venous thromboembolism prevention strategies for in-hospital patients affected by Zika and Chikungunya infections.

The volume is filled with an He:CF4 gas mixture at atmospheric pressure. The 3D topology, and therefore direction of the recoils, is reconstructed thanks to the combined use of high-granularity, high sensitivity sCMOS cameras, for the precise tracking of the projection of the recoils on the GEM plane, and of fast light sensors in order to obtain the coordinate perpendicular to the camera plane.
To conclude the R&D phase, the 50 L prototype, called Long Imaging ModulE (LIME), was moved underground at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) in order to study the performance of the CYGNO experimental approach in a low background environment and to assess the contributions to the background from different sources, also comparing with Monte Carlo simulations.
Stability studies and the effects of environmental condition on the light yield will be discussed, focusing on the effect of humidity on the detector response and stability amount and rate of self-sustaining micro-discharges. This is a crucial step towards the development of a large demonstrator.

Nanotechnology, specifically two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials, is used in certain wastewater treatment systems. Graphene, g-C3N4, MoS2, and MXene are just a few examples of emerging 2D nanomaterials that exhibit an extraordinary ratio of surface (m3), providing material consumption, time consumption, and treatment technique for cleaning and observing water. In this post, we'll talk about the ways in which 2D nanomaterials may be tuned to perform certain functions, namely how they can be used for water management. The following is a quick overview of nanostructured materials and its possible use in water management: Also discussed in length are the applications of 2D nanomaterials in water purification, including pollutant adsorption, filtration, disinfection, and photocatalysis. In the phase 1-2 portion of an adaptive trial, REGEN-COV, a combination of the monoclonal antibodies casirivimab and imdevimab, reduced the viral load and number of medical visits in patients with ...coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19). REGEN-COV has activity in vitro against current severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) variants of concern.
In the phase 3 portion of an adaptive trial, we randomly assigned outpatients with Covid-19 and risk factors for severe disease to receive various doses of intravenous REGEN-COV or placebo. Patients were followed through day 29. A prespecified hierarchical analysis was used to assess the end points of hospitalization or death and the time to resolution of symptoms. Safety was also evaluated.
Covid-19-related hospitalization or death from any cause occurred in 18 of 1355 patients in the REGEN-COV 2400-mg group (1.3%) and in 62 of 1341 patients in the placebo group who underwent randomization concurrently (4.6%) (relative risk reduction 1 minus the relative risk, 71.3%; P<0.001); these outcomes occurred in 7 of 736 patients in the REGEN-COV 1200-mg group (1.0%) and in 24 of 748 patients in the placebo group who underwent randomization concurrently (3.2%) (relative risk reduction, 70.4%; P = 0.002). The median time to resolution of symptoms was 4 days shorter with each REGEN-COV dose than with placebo (10 days vs. 14 days; P<0.001 for both comparisons). REGEN-COV was efficacious across various subgroups, including patients who were SARS-CoV-2 serum antibody-positive at baseline. Both REGEN-COV doses reduced viral load faster than placebo; the least-squares mean difference in viral load from baseline through day 7 was -0.71 log
copies per milliliter (95% confidence interval CI, -0.90 to -0.53) in the 1200-mg group and -0.86 log
copies per milliliter (95% CI, -1.00 to -0.72) in the 2400-mg group. Serious adverse events occurred more frequently in the placebo group (4.0%) than in the 1200-mg group (1.1%) and the 2400-mg group (1.3%); infusion-related reactions of grade 2 or higher occurred in less than 0.3% of the patients in all groups.
REGEN-COV reduced the risk of Covid-19-related hospitalization or death from any cause, and it resolved symptoms and reduced the SARS-CoV-2 viral load more rapidly than placebo. (Funded by Regeneron Pharmaceuticals and others; ClinicalTrials.gov number, NCT04425629.).
Ertapenem and piperacillin/tazobactam are beta-lactam antibiotics with a broad spectrum of activity, used for thetreatment of mixed infections, in which Bacteroides fragilisplays an important ...etiological role. The aim of this study was to select strains of B. fragilis resistant to these drugs and correlate the phenotype profiles of these line-ages with changes in the virulence of the original bacterium. B. fragilis AtCC 25285, sensitive to the drugs listed, was used in this study. Strains resistant to these drugs were obtained by multi-step method and this condition was confirmed by comparing the time-kill curve of the original strain with those curves obtained from derived-resistant strains. To assess the virulence, germ-free mice were challenged intragastrically with the original strain or those derived-resistant. The mouse infection by thepiperacillin/tazobactam-resistant B. fragilis strain produced increased levels of C-reactive protein, alkaline phosphatase and white blood cells and reduced platelet counts, what may indicate that acquisition of piperacillin/tazobactam resistance may enhance the pathogenic properties of these B. fragilis strains.
The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith, 1797) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is the most important noctuid pest in the Americas and has recently become an invasive pest in Africa. A detailed ...record of S. frugiperda's host plants is essential to better understand the biology and ecology of this pest, conduct future studies, and develop Integrated Pest Management programmes. In this study, we collected and systematically arranged the fragmented bibliographic information on S. frugiperda feeding records. Furthermore, we registered new records of host plants for S. frugiperda based on eight years of surveys in Brazil. The literature review and surveys resulted in a total of 353 S. frugiperda larval host plant records belonging to 76 plant families, principally Poaceae (106), Asteraceae (31) and Fabaceae (31). The literature search revealed 274 (77 % of total) bibliographic records, while 82 (23 %) are new records from surveys in Brazil. The new comprehensive and updated host plant list will improve our understanding of pest biology and management, as well as facilitate future studies on this pest.
We characterized fibrosing cholestatic hepatitis (FCH) in a large cohort of HIV/HCV co‐infected patients. Between 1999 and 2008, 59 HIV infected patients were transplanted for end‐stage liver disease ...due to HCV. Eleven patients (19%) developed FCH within a mean period of 7 months 2–27 after liver transplantation (LT). At Week 1 post‐LT, the mean HCV viral load was higher in the FCH group: 6.13 log10 IU/mL ± 1.30 versus 4.9 log10 IU/mL ± 1.78 in the non‐FCH group, p = 0.05. At the onset of acute hepatitis after LT, activity was moderate to severe in 8/11 HIV+/HCV+ patients with FCH (73%) versus 13/28 (46%) HIV+/HCV+ non‐FCH (p = 0.007) patients. A complete virological response to anti‐HCV therapy was observed in 2/11 (18%) patients. Survival differed significantly between the two groups (at 3 years, 67% in non‐FCH patients versus 15% in FCH patients, p = 0.004). An early diagnosis of FCH may be suggested by the presence of marked disease activity when acute hepatitis is diagnosed and when a high viral load is present. The initiation of anti‐HCV therapy should be considered at this point.
An early diagnosis of fibrosing cholestatic hepatitis, which develops after liver transplantation in 19% of a cohort of HIV/HCV coinfected patients, is feasible.
