Patient AM, with left visuospatial neglect, and 31 healthy participants performed a parity judgment task on numbers presented to their right parafovea. Target numbers were preceded by a pair of ...digits (prime) appearing peripherally for 100 ms either in their left (LVF) or in their right visual field (RVF), which participants had to ignore. In healthy participants, when primes were arithmetically related to the following target, performance was significantly slower than when primes and targets were not related. In contrast, AM's performance was slower in the related than in the control condition when prime digits appeared in his RVF, whereas it was faster in the related than in the control condition when prime digits appeared in his LVF. This suggests that neglected numbers were nevertheless processed at least until the level of stored arithmetic knowledge. Thus, visuospatial neglect does not prevent neglected numbers from accessing their representations in arithmetic networks, which seems to be a highly automatised skill. Moreover, AM's pattern of data (i.e., interference from RVF primes vs. facilitation from LVF primes) supports the hypothesis of a link between conscious attention and inhibitory processes, as proposed by Fuentes and Humphreys (1996).
Abstract
Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii is a toxic bloom-forming cyanobacterium that occurs at tropical and temperate latitudes. Despite several reports from Africa, no data were previously available ...about its dynamics or toxic potential there. We therefore carried out a 1-year survey of the dynamics of C. raciborskii in the main water reservoir in Senegal, Lake Guiers. Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii never formed a bloom in this lake during the period studied, but was dominant during the dry season. The only observed bloom-forming species was a diatom, Fragilaria sp., which displayed a seasonal pattern contrary to that exhibited by C. raciborskii. Principal component analysis applied to environmental and phytoplankton data showed that high C. raciborskii biomasses were mainly related to high temperature and water column stability. Tests for C. raciborskii species-related toxicity and/or toxin synthesis were performed on 21 isolated clones. All the strains isolated tested negative in mouse toxicity bioassays, toxin analysis (MS/MS) and tests for known cylindrospermopsin genes (ps, pks). The limited number of isolates studied, and the occurrence of toxic and nontoxic clones in natural cyanobacterial populations, mean that we cannot conclude that there is no C. raciborskii-associated health risk in this drinking water reservoir.
Background
The independent prognostic impact of diabetes mellitus (DM) and prediabetes mellitus (pre‐DM) on survival outcomes in patients with chronic heart failure has been investigated in ...observational registries and randomized, clinical trials, but the results have been often inconclusive or conflicting. We examined the independent prognostic impact of DM and pre‐DM on survival outcomes in the GISSI‐HF (Gruppo Italiano per lo Studio della Sopravvivenza nella Insufficienza Cardiaca‐Heart Failure) trial.
Methods and Results
We assessed the risk of all‐cause death and the composite of all‐cause death or cardiovascular hospitalization over a median follow‐up period of 3.9 years among the 6935 chronic heart failure participants of the GISSI‐HF trial, who were stratified by presence of DM (n=2852), pre‐DM (n=2013), and non‐DM (n=2070) at baseline. Compared with non‐DM patients, those with DM had remarkably higher incidence rates of all‐cause death (34.5% versus 24.6%) and the composite end point (63.6% versus 54.7%). Conversely, both event rates were similar between non‐DM patients and those with pre‐DM. Cox regression analysis showed that DM, but not pre‐DM, was associated with an increased risk of all‐cause death (adjusted hazard ratio, 1.43; 95% CI, 1.28–1.60) and of the composite end point (adjusted hazard ratio, 1.23; 95% CI, 1.13–1.32), independently of established risk factors. In the DM subgroup, higher hemoglobin A1c was also independently associated with increased risk of both study outcomes (all‐cause death: adjusted hazard ratio, 1.21; 95% CI, 1.02–1.43; and composite end point: adjusted hazard ratio, 1.14; 95% CI, 1.01–1.29, respectively).
Conclusions
Presence of DM was independently associated with poor long‐term survival outcomes in patients with chronic heart failure.

BKV is known to cause allograft failure in kidney transplant recipients. It has been recently recognized to cause native kidney nephropathy in non‐kidney transplant recipients. This is a case report ...BKVN in a 15‐yr‐old HTx recipient who had PTLD and a review of pediatric cases in the literature. The patient was diagnosed with BKVN +189 months after transplantation and died thirty days after diagnosis of BKVN. We identified five other cases of BKVN in pediatric non‐kidney solid organ transplantation, of which all were HTx recipients. Overall, outcome was poor and BKV clearance was not achieved with reduction of immunosuppression and with current therapies. We strongly recommend that pediatric HTx recipients be tested for BKV infection if there is evidence of kidney dysfunction. We also recommend that they have an annual screening for BKV viruria and viremia with the assessment of kidney function.
In a typical Simon task, the (irrelevant) spatial position of the stimulus interferes with the processing of the salient characteristic (e.g., color). We used the Simon effect to investigate the ...automatic processing of gaze cues. We show that a simple drawing of schematic eyes automatically generates a spatially defined code of gaze direction. Although completely irrelevant to the task, direction of gaze influenced reaction times in a spatially selective two-choice discrimination based on eye color. Moreover, in one experiment employing an orthogonal manipulation of stimulus position and gaze direction, we found that coding of gaze direction is independent of stimulus spatial coding. Our finding of a "gaze-direction Simon effect" is congruent with the hypothesis that gaze direction is coded by a specialized mechanism.
Through this single-center consecutive prospective study, we evaluated the results of a combined approach for L5-S1 isthmic spondylolisthesis, using a polyetheretherketone (PEEK) interbody lordotic ...cage during anterior approach and pedicle screw-based posterior fixation. Between 2010 and 2014, 27 adult patients were treated for L5-S1 isthmic spondylolisthesis (high and low grades) by a combined approach with a minimum follow-up of one year. Clinical outcome was assessed before surgical treatment and at four months and one year after surgery by: VAS, Oswestry Index (ODI) and Rolland-Morris scores. Two observers evaluated the following radiological parameters: pelvic incidence, pelvic tilt, lumbar lordosis, segmental lordosis L5-S1, anterior and posterior disc height, spinal vertical axis (SVA), SVA/sacro-femoral distance (SFD) ratio. Fusion was evaluated on the CT scan at one-year follow-up. Blood loss, surgery time and complications were also collected. The mean age was 47.7 years (±16.9). The VAS, ODI and Rolland-Morris scores were significantly improved postoperatively, decreased from 7.5 (±1.45); 48 (±19.25); 15.3 (±4.67) before the surgery to 3.8 (±2.55); 28.7 (±19.58) and 7.76 (±7.21) respectively at one year after the surgery (P=0.05). The mean follow-up was 3.3 years. Mean surgery time was 193.7min (±37). Fusion was obtained in 100% of cases. Segmental lordosis L5-S1, pelvic tilt, slippage, anterior and posterior L5-S1 disc height were significantly improved postoperatively, they passed from 20.1; 22.6; 35.3%; 26.4%; 17.9% to 29.5; 20.6; 20.3%; 64.4%; 36.3% respectively. Combined surgical procedure meets the required goals of surgery in the treatment of adults L5-S1 isthmic spondylolisthesis.
PROSPECT is a comprehensive payload package developed by the European Space Agency which will support the extraction and analysis of lunar surface and subsurface samples as well as the acquisition of ...data from additional environmental sensors. The key elements of PROSPECT are the ProSEED drill and the ProSPA analytical laboratory. ProSEED will support the acquisition of cryogenic samples from depths up to 1 m and deliver them to the ProSPA instrument. ProSPA will receive and seal samples in miniaturized ovens, heat them, physically and chemically process the released volatiles, and analyze the obtained constituents via mass spectrometry using two types of spectrometers. Contextual information will be provided by cameras which will generate multi-spectral images of the drill working area and of acquired samples, and via temperature sensors and a permittivity sensor that are integrated in the drill rod. The package is designed for minimizing volatile loss from the sample between acquisition and analysis. Initially developed for a flight on the Russian Luna-27 mission, the payload package design was adapted for a more generic lander accommodation and will be flown on a lunar polar lander mission developed within the NASA Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) program. PROSPECT targets science and exploration in lunar areas that might harbor deposits of volatiles, and also supports the demonstration of In-Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU) techniques in the lunar environment. PROSPECT operations are designed to be automated to a significant degree but rely on operator monitoring during critical phases. Here, we report the PROSPECT flight design that will be built, tested, and qualified according to European space technology engineering standards before delivery to the lander provider for spacecraft integration. The package is currently in the hardware manufacturing and integration phase with a target delivery to the NASA-selected CLPS lander provider in 2025.
The recent introduction of new antiretroviral drugs, characterized by high efficiency and improved safety profiles, has not reduced the incidence of long-term adverse effects, in some cases ...manifested as selective organ damage. The presence of organ damage in patients receiving antiretroviral treatment is not only the expression of treatment toxicity, but also a complex interaction between individual risk factors, HIV-correlated effects, and antiretroviral drug toxicity. Kidney damage belongs to these adverse events. Renal function abnormalities are present in a large percentage of patients with HIV infection. Moreover, HIV-associated renal disease seems to be associated with progression to AIDS and death. In this review we address the various aspects of the epidemiology of renal damage, the interaction and the convergent effect of HIV and antiretroviral drugs in the onset of kidney injury, the interplay between kidney function and other organ systems, early clinical management, the monitoring of renal function, and a proposal of clinical approach to kidney disease in daily practice. Finally, we discuss future perspectives of renal damage in HIV patients and evaluate the patient's perspective.

The aim of this study was to examine the effects of maternal interpersonal violence-related posttraumatic disorder (IPV-PTSD) on child appraisal of emotion, as measured by high-density electroencephalography (HD-EEG) during an Emotional Face-matching Task (EFMT). We recorded HD-EEG in 47 children of mothers with and without IPV-PTSD during an Emotional Face-matching Task (EFMT). Mothers and children each performed the EFMT. Behavioral results demonstrated that both mothers who were directly exposed to violent events, and their children, presented attentional bias toward negative emotions when processing facial stimuli. EEG findings confirmed differences in emotion appraisal between children of IPV-PTSD mothers and non-PTSD controls at scalp-level and in terms of source localization upon which children of IPV-PTSD mothers demonstrated decreased activation of the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) in response to angry and fearful faces as compared to non-PTSD children with respect to the N170 component. Our study, to our knowledge, is the first to show that maternal IPV-PTSD significantly affects a mother's own and her child's neural activity in response to facial expressions of negative emotion. These findings are potentially important to the development and study of effective interventions to interrupt intergenerational cycles of violence and trauma.
