Wearable inertial sensors offer the possibility to monitor sleeping position and respiration rate during sleep, enabling a comfortable and low-cost method to remotely monitor patients. Novel methods ...to estimate respiration rate and position during sleep using accelerometer data are presented, with algorithm performance examined for two sensor locations, and accelerometer-derived respiration rate compared across sleeping positions. Eleven participants (9 male; aged: 47.82±14.14 years; BMI 30.9±5.27 kg/m 2 ; AHI 5.77±4.18) undergoing a scheduled clinical polysomnography (PSG) wore a tri-axial accelerometer on their chest and upper abdomen. PSG cannula flow and position data were used as benchmark data for respiration rate (breaths per minute, bpm) and position. Sleeping position was classified using logistic regression, with features derived from filtered acceleration and orientation. Accelerometer-derived respiration rate was estimated for 30 s epochs using an adaptive peak detection algorithm which combined filtered acceleration and orientation data to identify individual breaths. Sensor-derived and PSG respiration rates were then compared. Mean absolute error (MAE) in respiration rate did not vary between sensor locations (abdomen: 1.67±0.37 bpm; chest: 1.89±0.53 bpm; p=0.52), while reduced MAE was observed when participants lay on their side (1.58±0.54 bpm) compared to supine (2.43±0.95 bpm), p<0.01. MAE was less than 2 bpm for 83.6% of all 30 s windows across all subjects. The position classifier distinguished supine and left/right with a ROC AUC of 0.87, and between left and right with a ROC AUC of 0.94. The proposed methods may enable a low-cost solution for in-home, long term sleeping posture and respiration monitoring.
The official records of all games played in the Western Hockey League (N = 432) during a season provided the data for a Principal Components analysis of 19 aggressive penalties. The solution ...suggested that inter-personal aggression in the sport is multiply determined and can arise from
eight different sets of conditions or antecedents. The advantages to research designs of using penalty indices as measures of aggression were discussed within the exceptional circumstance of a subculture which is supportive of aggressive behaviors.
In this Practice Inquiry, Mexican American parents’ perceptions of cultural influences on grieving the death of their child were described. Findings were used to inform a continuing education module ...for nurses involved in the care of Mexican American parents who have experienced the death of their child. This line of inquiry is important as the needs of grieving Mexican American parents are not always recognized by those providing care. Ethnographic methodology was used to explore the narratives of three Mexican American fathers and three Mexican American mothers who had experienced the death of their child. A purposive sample was recruited from a faith based community health center in Tucson, AZ. In depth interviews were conducted primarily in the participants’ homes by the researcher. All interviews were conducted in Spanish language. Data sources included participant interviews, participant observation, field notes and measures for demographic data and acculturation (ARSMA-II). The overarching cultural theme that represents the participants’ perspectives is El Dolor de los Padres: Pain in the Parent. The three major themes that support the overarching cultural theme include: (a) Enduring Great Pain, (b) Voices of Mexican American Parents, and (c) Cultural Death Traditions. The fourth major theme, Going Forward: For the Provider specifically addresses data gathered to educate nurses for supporting Mexican American parents grieving the death of a child. The findings of the study are interpreted within the context of the Mexican cultural concepts of familismo, machismo, marianismo, fatalismo, spiritualidad, respeto, confianza and personalismo and the concept of vulnerability. The study’s significance for the practice of nursing is upheld in the findings that are specific to understanding and preventing disparities in the care of Mexican American parents who have experienced the death of a child. Increasing nursing knowledge of the cultural context of grieving, especially spiritualidad and continuing memories, offering culturally competent nursing interventions at this time of deep emotional pain are elucidated in this Practice Inquiry.

A model illustrating the process by which family planning information is diffused among low-income families in a metropolitan area is presented. Statistical measurement of data obtained in a family ...planning survey conducted in Nashville-Davidson County, Tenn lends empirical support & permits limited conclusions concerning the predictive efficiency of the model. Concentrating on census tracts containing populations with high fertility rates, the study takes into account some personal & attitudinal attributes of the population-atrisk as well as neighborhood characteristics as inputs affecting clinic attendance. Some fecund women responded favorably to the clinics; others (often 4th & 5th parity mothers) were 'hard core' resisters to family planning. Since presumably the variables intervening between personal characteristics, neighborhood social structure, & response to the program had something to do with informal communication, attention is directed to identifying & systematically testing this latter variable. The model which emerges illustrates the interaction of 11 independent & 2 intervening variables upon the dependent variable, willingness to convey birth control information to others.
