The RAVDESS is a validated multimodal database of emotional speech and song. The database is gender balanced consisting of 24 professional actors, vocalizing lexically-matched statements in a neutral ...North American accent. Speech includes calm, happy, sad, angry, fearful, surprise, and disgust expressions, and song contains calm, happy, sad, angry, and fearful emotions. Each expression is produced at two levels of emotional intensity, with an additional neutral expression. All conditions are available in face-and-voice, face-only, and voice-only formats. The set of 7356 recordings were each rated 10 times on emotional validity, intensity, and genuineness. Ratings were provided by 247 individuals who were characteristic of untrained research participants from North America. A further set of 72 participants provided test-retest data. High levels of emotional validity and test-retest intrarater reliability were reported. Corrected accuracy and composite "goodness" measures are presented to assist researchers in the selection of stimuli. Hydrogen is a fuel with a potentially zero-carbon footprint viewed as a viable alternative to fossil fuels. It can be produced in a large scale via electrochemical water splitting using electricity ...derived from renewable sources, but this would require highly active, inexpensive, and stable hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts to replace the Pt benchmark. Transition-metal phosphides (TMPs) are potential Pt replacements owing to their generally high activity as well as versatility as HER catalysts for different pH media. This review summarizes the recent progress in the development of TMP HER electrocatalysts, focusing on the strategies that have been recently explored to tune the activity in acidic, neutral, and basic media. These strategies are the doping of TMPs with metal and nonmetal elements, fabrication of multimetallic phosphide phases, and construction of multicomponent heterostructures comprising TMPs and another component such as a different TMP or a metal oxide/hydroxide. The synthetic methods utilized to design the catalysts are also presented. Finally, the challenges still remaining and future research directions are discussed.
Climate, groundwater extraction, and surface water flows have complex nonlinear relationships with groundwater level in agricultural regions. To better understand the relative importance of each ...driver and predict groundwater level change, we develop a new ensemble modeling framework based on spectral analysis, machine learning, and uncertainty analysis, as an alternative to complex and computationally expensive physical models. We apply and evaluate this new approach in the context of two aquifer systems supporting agricultural production in the United States: the High Plains aquifer (HPA) and the Mississippi River Valley alluvial aquifer (MRVA). We select input data sets by using a combination of mutual information, genetic algorithms, and lag analysis, and then use the selected data sets in a Multilayer Perceptron network architecture to simulate seasonal groundwater level change. As expected, model results suggest that irrigation demand has the highest influence on groundwater level change for a majority of the wells. The subset of groundwater observations not used in model training or cross‐validation correlates strongly (R > 0.8) with model results for 88 and 83% of the wells in the HPA and MRVA, respectively. In both aquifer systems, the error in the modeled cumulative groundwater level change during testing (2003–2012) was less than 2 m over a majority of the area. We conclude that our modeling framework can serve as an alternative approach to simulating groundwater level change and water availability, especially in regions where subsurface properties are unknown.

CuO-based nanostructures have been widely investigated in catalysis, sensing, and energy conversion and storage in recent years. The unique properties of these nanostructures are largely related to ...the morphology and crystallinity of CuO. The controlled deposition of conformal CuO thin films by atomic layer deposition (ALD) has remained challenging until now owing to the limited understanding of the nucleation behavior and growth process. Here, a novel ALD process for copper oxide was developed using copper(II) trifluoroacetylacetonate Cu(tfacac)2 as the metal precursor. The nucleation and initial growth of a CuO film are strongly dependent on the surface OH concentration. A continuous particulate-like CuO film was grown on OH-abundant pristine SiO2 particles, whereas the surface of the annealed SiO2 particles (presenting mostly isolated OH groups) remained uncoated under the same growth conditions. Moreover, a uniform and conformal CuO film was grown on covalently functionalized CNTs under identical conditions as pristine SiO2 particles. This study provides a strategy for tailoring the structure and the properties of thin films via ALD, which is promising for designing well-tailored nanostructures for various applications.
Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the most common microvascular complication of diabetes and the leading cause of visual impairment in the working-age population in the Western world. Diabetic macular ...oedema (DME) is one of the major complications of DR. Therapy with intravitreal injections of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) drugs has become the gold standard treatment for DR and its complications. However, these drugs have no effect on the pathogenesis of DR and must be administered frequently via invasive intravitreal injections over many years. Thus, there is a pressing need to develop new therapeutic strategies to improve the treatment of this devastating disease. Indeed, an increasing volume of data supports the role of the inflammatory process in the pathogenesis of DR itself and its complications, including both increased retinal vascular permeability and neovascularization. Inflammation may also contribute to retinal neurodegeneration. Evidence that low-grade inflammation plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of DME has opened up new pathways and targets for the development of improved treatments. Anti-inflammatory compounds such as intravitreal glucocorticoids, topical non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), antioxidants, inflammatory molecule inhibitors, renin–angiotensin system (RAS) blockers and natural anti-inflammatory therapies may all be considered to reduce the rate of administration of antineovascularization agents in the treatment of DR. This report describes the current state of knowledge of the potential role of anti-inflammatory drugs in controlling the onset and evolution of DR and DME.

An open-label randomized controlled trial was conducted with participants taking anxiolytics (n = 163). Participants were randomly assigned using the Qualtrics randomizer algorithm, to a single session of sound-based treatment in one of four parallel arms: combined (music & ABS; n = 39), music-alone (n = 36), ABS-alone (n = 41), or pink noise (control; n = 47). Pre- and post-intervention somatic and cognitive state anxiety measures were collected along with trait anxiety, personality measures and musical preferences. The study was completed online using a custom application.
Based on trait anxiety scores participants were separated into moderate and high trait anxiety sub-groups. Among participants with moderate trait anxiety, we observed reductions in somatic anxiety that were greater in combined and music-alone conditions than in the pink noise condition; and reductions in cognitive state anxiety that were greater in the combined condition than in the music-alone, ABS-alone, and pink noise conditions. While we also observed reductions in somatic and cognitive state anxiety in participants with high trait anxiety, the conditions were not well differentiated.
Sound-based treatments are effective in reducing somatic and cognitive state anxiety. For participants with moderate trait anxiety, combined conditions were most efficacious.

Aims To evaluate the efficacy of immunosuppression in virus-negative inflammatory cardiomyopathy. Methods and results This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study included 85 patients with ...myocarditis and chronic (>6 months) heart failure unresponsive to conventional therapy, with no evidence of myocardial viral genomes. Patients received either prednisone 1 mg kg–1 day–1 for 4 weeks followed by 0.33 mg kg–1 day–1 for 5 months and azathioprine 2 mg kg–1 day–1 for 6 months (43 patients, Group 1) or placebo (42 patients, Group 2) in addition to conventional therapy for heart failure. Primary outcome was the 6 month improvement in left-ventricular function. Group 1 showed a significant improvement of left-ventricular ejection fraction and a significant decrease in left-ventricular dimensions and volumes compared with baseline. None of Group 2 patients showed improvement of ejection fraction, that significantly worsened compared with baseline. No major adverse reaction was registered as a result of immunosuppression. Conclusion These data confirm the efficacy of immunosuppression in virus-negative inflammatory cardiomyopathy. Lack of response in 12% of cases suggests the presence of not screened viruses or mechanisms of damage and inflammation not susceptible to immunosuppression.
