Emissions from gasoline and diesel vehicles are predominant anthropogenic sources of reactive gas-phase organic carbon and key precursors to secondary organic aerosol (SOA) in urban areas. Their ...relative importance for aerosol formation is a controversial issue with implications for air quality control policy and public health. We characterize the chemical composition, mass distribution, and organic aerosol formation potential of emissions from gasoline and diesel vehicles, and find diesel exhaust is seven times more efficient at forming aerosol than gasoline exhaust. However, both sources are important for air quality; depending on a region’s fuel use, diesel is responsible for 65% to 90% of vehicular-derived SOA, with substantial contributions from aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons. Including these insights on source characterization and SOA formation will improve regional pollution control policies, fuel regulations, and methodologies for future measurement, laboratory, and modeling studies.
We report constraints on the dark photon effective kinetic mixing parameter (κ) with data taken from two p-type point-contact germanium detectors of the CDEX-10 experiment at the China Jinping ...Underground Laboratory. The 90% confidence level upper limits on κ of solar dark photon from 205.4 kg-day exposure are derived, probing new parameter space with masses (m_{V}) from 10 to 300 eV/c^{2} in direct detection experiments. Considering dark photon as the cosmological dark matter, limits at 90% confidence level with m_{V} from 0.1 to 4.0 keV/c^{2} are set from 449.6 kg-day data, with a minimum of κ=1.3×10^{-15} at m_{V}=200 eV/c^{2}.

Fine film-like stable retained austenite was obtained in a Fe–0.08C–0.5Si–2.4Mn–0.5Ni in weight percent (wt.%) steel by the two-step intercritical heat treatment. The first step of intercritical annealing creates a mixed microstructure of preliminary alloy-enriched martensite and lean alloyed intercritical ferrite, which is called as “reverted structure” and “un-reverted structure”, respectively. The second step of intercritical tempering is beneficial for producing film-like stable reverted austenite along the reverted structure. The stabilization of retained austenite was studied by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dilatometry and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The two-step austenite reverted transformation associated with intercritical partition of C, Mn and Ni is believed to be the underlying basis for stabilization of retained austenite during the two-step intercritical heat treatment. Stable retained austenite is not only beneficial for high ductility, but also for low temperature toughness by restricting brittle fracture. With 10% (volume fraction) of retained austenite in the steel, high low temperature toughness with average Charpy impact energy of 65J at −80°C was obtained.
Being a key feature of a glassy state, low temperature relaxation has important implications on the mechanical behavior of glasses; however, the mechanism of low temperature relaxation is still an ...open issue, which has been debated for decades. By systematically investigating the influences of cooling rate and pressure on low temperature relaxation in the Zr50Cu50 metallic glasses, it is found that even though pressure does induce pronounced local structural change, the low temperature-relaxation behavior of the metallic glass is affected mainly by cooling rate, not by pressure. According to the atomic displacement and connection mode analysis, we further demonstrate that the low temperature relaxation is dominated by the dispersion degree of fast dynamic atoms rather than the most probable atomic nonaffine displacement. Our finding provides the direct atomic-level evidence that the intrinsic heterogeneity is the key factor that determines the low temperature-relaxation behavior of the metallic glasses.
Accurate and robust pathological image analysis for colorectal cancer (CRC) diagnosis is time-consuming and knowledge-intensive, but is essential for CRC patients' treatment. The current heavy ...workload of pathologists in clinics/hospitals may easily lead to unconscious misdiagnosis of CRC based on daily image analyses.
Based on a state-of-the-art transfer-learned deep convolutional neural network in artificial intelligence (AI), we proposed a novel patch aggregation strategy for clinic CRC diagnosis using weakly labeled pathological whole-slide image (WSI) patches. This approach was trained and validated using an unprecedented and enormously large number of 170,099 patches, > 14,680 WSIs, from > 9631 subjects that covered diverse and representative clinical cases from multi-independent-sources across China, the USA, and Germany.
Our innovative AI tool consistently and nearly perfectly agreed with (average Kappa statistic 0.896) and even often better than most of the experienced expert pathologists when tested in diagnosing CRC WSIs from multicenters. The average area under the receiver operating characteristics curve (AUC) of AI was greater than that of the pathologists (0.988 vs 0.970) and achieved the best performance among the application of other AI methods to CRC diagnosis. Our AI-generated heatmap highlights the image regions of cancer tissue/cells.
This first-ever generalizable AI system can handle large amounts of WSIs consistently and robustly without potential bias due to fatigue commonly experienced by clinical pathologists. It will drastically alleviate the heavy clinical burden of daily pathology diagnosis and improve the treatment for CRC patients. This tool is generalizable to other cancer diagnosis based on image recognition.
A nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) mass screening trial using a combination of immunoglobulin A antibodies to Epstein-Barr virus capsid antigen and nuclear antigen-1 by enzyme-linked immunosorbent ...assay in addition to indirect mirror examination in the nasopharynx and/or lymphatic palpation (IMLP) was conducted in southern China. Cantonese aged 30-59 years residing in 2 cities randomly selected by cluster sampling, Sihui and Zhongshan, were invited to participate in this screening from May 2008 through May 2010. Participants were offered fiberoptic endoscopy examination and/or pathologic biopsy if their serologic tests reached our predefined level of high risk or if results from the physical examination indicated possible cancer (i.e., were IMLP positive). A total of 28,688 individuals were voluntarily screened in the initial round. The overall NPC detection rate was 0.14% (41/28,688) with an early diagnosis rate of 68.3% (28/41) during the first year of follow-up. Thirty-eight of 41 cases (92.7%) were detected among the high-risk group, and 7 of 41 cases (17.1%) were detected among the IMLP-positive group. The 2 Epstein-Barr virus serologic tests by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay could be a feasible alternative for NPC screening in endemic areas. Further follow-up is needed to examine whether screening has an effect on decreasing mortality from NPC in these areas.
The contribution of multi-phase microstructure and retained austenite on mechanical properties of austempered and intercritical annealed Fe–0.23C–1.8Mn–1.35Si (wt%) steel was studied. The multi-phase ...microstructure comprised of intercritical ferrite (IF), bainite/martensite, and retained austenite. During austempering, the retained austenite was stabilized, which was studied using a combination of experimental (XRD, TEM) and thermodynamic analysis. The termination of bainitic transformation combined with carbon rejection into residual austenite during the second step austempering treatment is believed to be the underlying basis for stabilization of retained austenite. This led to significant increase in uniform and total elongation (25% and 36%, respectively) and the product of tensile strength and % elongation was 33GPa%. The work hardening behavior of retained austenite exhibited a three-stage process such that necking was delayed. The increased work hardening rate is attributed to the multi-phase microstructure and TRIP effect.
BACKGROUND
The potential role of occupational exposures in the development of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) remains unclear, particularly in high‐incidence areas.
METHODS
The authors conducted a ...population‐based case‐control study, consisting of 2514 incident NPC cases and 2586 randomly selected population controls, in southern China from 2010 to 2014. Occupational history and other covariates were self‐reported using a questionnaire. Multivariate logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the risk of NPC associated with occupational exposures. Restricted cubic splines were used to evaluate potentially nonlinear duration‐response relations.
RESULTS
Individuals who had exposure to occupational dusts (OR, 1.45; 95% CI, 1.26‐1.68), chemical vapors (OR, 1.37; 95% CI, 1.17‐1.61), exhausts/smokes (OR, 1.42; 95% CI, 1.25‐1.60), or acids/alkalis (OR, 1.56; 95% CI, 1.30‐1.89) in the workplace had an increased NPC risk compared with those who were unexposed. Risk estimates for all 4 categories of occupational exposures appeared to linearly increase with increasing duration. Within these categories, occupational exposure to 14 subtypes of agents conferred significantly higher risks of NPC, with ORs ranging from 1.30 to 2.29, including dust from metals, textiles, cement, or coal; vapor from formaldehyde, organic solvents, or dyes; exhaust or smoke from diesel, firewood, asphalt/tar, vehicles, or welding; and sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, and concentrated alkali/ammonia.
CONCLUSIONS
Occupational exposures to dusts, chemical vapors, exhausts/smokes, or acids/alkalis are associated with an excess risk of NPC. If the current results are causal, then the amelioration of workplace conditions might alleviate the burden of NPC in endemic areas.

Ras oncogene upregulates the expression of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate oxidase (Nox) 1 via the Raf/MEK/ERK pathway, leading to the elevated production of reactive oxygen species that ...is essential for maintenance of Ras-transformation phenotypes. However, the precise transcriptional control mechanism underlying Ras-induced Nox1 expression remains to be elucidated. Here we demonstrated that via the MEK/ERK pathway, Ras signaling enhances the activity of the functional Nox1 promoter (nt -321 to -1) in colon cancer CaCo-2 cells and thereby induces the formation of the specific protein-DNA complexes in the two GATA-binding site-containing regions (nt -161 to -136 and -125 to -100). Supershift assays with GATA antibodies, protein analyses and chromatin immunoprecipitation revealed that GATA-6 is a component of the specific protein-DNA complexes at the Nox1 promoter. GATA-6 was able to trans-activate the Nox1 promoter but not a promoter in which the GATA-binding sites are mutated. Moreover, GATA-6 was phosphorylated at serine residues by MEK-activated ERK, which increased GATA-6 DNA binding, correlating with suppression of the Nox1 promoter activity by an MEK inhibitor PD98059. Finally, the site-directed mutation of the consensus ERK phosphorylation site (PYS(120)P to PYA(120)P) of GATA-6 abolished its trans-activation activity, suppressing of the growth of CaCo-2 cells. On the basis of these results, we propose that oncogenic Ras signaling upregulates the transcription of Nox1 through MEK-ERK-dependent phosphorylation of GATA-6.
