ABSTRACT
We present an ALMA study of the ∼180 brightest sources in the SCUBA-2 850-μm map of the COSMOS field from the S2COSMOS survey, as a pilot study for AS2COSMOS – a full survey of the ∼1000 ...sources in this field. In this pilot study, we have obtained 870-μm continuum maps of an essentially complete sample of the brightest 182 sub-millimetre sources ($S_{850\, \mu \rm m}\gt $ 6.2 mJy) in COSMOS. Our ALMA maps detect 260 sub-millimetre galaxies (SMGs) spanning a range in flux density of $S_{870\, \mu \rm m}$ = 0.7–19.2 mJy. We detect more than one SMG counterpart in 34 ± 2 per cent of sub-millimetre sources, increasing to 53 ± 8 per cent for SCUBA-2 sources brighter than $S_{850\, \mu \rm m}\gt $ 12 mJy. We estimate that approximately one-third of these SMG–SMG pairs are physically associated (with a higher rate for the brighter secondary SMGs, $S_{870\, \mu \rm m}\gtrsim$ 3 mJy), and illustrate this with the serendipitous detection of bright C ii 157.74-μm line emission in two SMGs, AS2COS 0001.1 and 0001.2 at z = 4.63, associated with the highest significance single-dish source. Using our source catalogue, we construct the interferometric 870-μm number counts at $S_{870\, \mu \rm m}\gt $ 6.2 mJy. We use the extensive archival data of this field to construct the multiwavelength spectral energy distribution of each AS2COSMOS SMG, and subsequently model this emission with magphys to estimate their photometric redshifts. We find a median photometric redshift for the $S_{870\, \mu \rm m}\gt $ 6.2 mJy AS2COSMOS sample of z = 2.87 ± 0.08, and clear evidence for an increase in the median redshift with 870-μm flux density suggesting strong evolution in the bright end of the 870-μm luminosity function.
In iron-pnictide superconductivity, the interband interaction between the hole and electron Fermi surfaces (FSs) is believed to play an important role. However, KFe 2 As 2 has three zone-centered ...hole FSs and no electron FS but still exhibits superconductivity. Our ultrahigh-resolution laser angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy unveils that KFe 2 As 2 is a nodal s-wave superconductor with highly unusual FS-selective multi-gap structure: a nodeless gap on the inner FS, an unconventional gap with "octet-line nodes" on the middle FS, and an almost-zero gap on the outer FS. This gap structure may arise from the frustration between competing pairing interactions on the hole FSs causing the eightfold sign reversal. Our results suggest that the A 1g superconducting symmetry is universal in iron-pnictides, in spite of the variety of gap functions.
Polymerized ionic liquids (PolyILs) are promising candidates for a wide range of technological applications due to their single ion conductivity and good mechanical properties. Tuning the glass ...transition temperature (T g) in these materials constitutes a major strategy to improve room temperature conductivity while controlling their mechanical properties. In this work, we show experimental and simulation results demonstrating that in these materials T g does not follow a universal scaling behavior with the volume of the structural units V m (including monomer and counterion). Instead, T g is significantly influenced by the chain flexibility and polymer dielectric constant. We propose a simplified empirical model that includes the electrostatic interactions and chain flexibility to describe T g in PolyILs. Our model enables design of new functional PolyILs with the desired T g.
The number and distribution of crossover events are tightly regulated at prophase of meiosis I. The resolution of Holliday junctions by structure-specific endonucleases, including MUS-81, SLX-1, ...XPF-1 and GEN-1, is one of the main mechanisms proposed for crossover formation. However, how these nucleases coordinately resolve Holliday junctions is still unclear. Here we identify both the functional overlap and differences between these four nucleases regarding their roles in crossover formation and control in the Caenorhabditis elegans germline. We show that MUS-81, XPF-1 and SLX-1, but not GEN-1, can bind to HIM-18/SLX4, a key scaffold for nucleases. Analysis of synthetic mitotic defects revealed that MUS-81 and SLX-1, but not XPF-1 and GEN-1, have overlapping roles with the Bloom syndrome helicase ortholog, HIM-6, supporting their in vivo roles in processing recombination intermediates. Taking advantage of the ease of genetic analysis and high-resolution imaging afforded by C. elegans, we examined crossover designation, frequency, distribution and chromosomal morphology in single, double, triple and quadruple mutants of the structure-specific endonucleases. This revealed that XPF-1 functions redundantly with MUS-81 and SLX-1 in executing crossover formation during meiotic double-strand break repair. Analysis of crossover distribution revealed that SLX-1 is required for crossover suppression at the center region of the autosomes. Finally, analysis of chromosome morphology in oocytes at late meiosis I stages uncovered that SLX-1 and XPF-1 promote meiotic chromosomal stability by preventing formation of chromosomal abnormalities. We propose a model in which coordinate action between structure-specific nucleases at different chromosome domains, namely MUS-81, SLX-1 and XPF-1 at the arms and SLX-1 at the center region, exerts positive and negative regulatory roles, respectively, for crossover control during C. elegans meiosis.
Tumor progression is a complex process involving extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling and stiffening. However, the mechanisms that govern these processes and their roles in tumor progression are ...still poorly understood. In this study, we performed bioinformatics, immunohistochemical, and biochemical analyses to examine if collagen cross-linking is associated with tumor stage and regional lymph node metastasis (RLNM) in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). We found that the genes encoding key enzymes for cross-linking are frequently overexpressed in oral, head, and neck cancers. Specifically, the enzymes lysyl hydroxylase 2 (LH2) or lysyl oxidase (LOX) and LOX-like 2 (LOXL2) were significantly upregulated in late-stage tumors and associated with poor patient prognosis. The protein levels of these enzymes in the primary human OSCC were also significantly increased in late-stage tumors and markedly elevated in the RLNM-positive tumors. Notably, while overall LOX/LOXL2-catalyzed collagen cross-links were enriched in late-stage and RLNM-positive tumors, LH2-mediated stable cross-links were significantly increased. To our knowledge, this is the first study to investigate the association of collagen cross-linking and expression of key enzymes regulating this process with OSCC stage. The data indicate a critical role for collagen cross-linking in OSCC tumor progression and metastasis, which may provide insights into development of novel therapeutic strategies to prevent OSCC progression.
Summary Objective We investigated the effects of single or repetitive intra-articular injections of synovial mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) on a rat osteoarthritis (OA) model, and elucidated the ...behaviors and underlying mechanisms of the stem cells after the injection. Design One week after the transection of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) of wild type Lewis rats, one million synovial MSCs were injected into the knee joint every week. Cartilage degeneration was evaluated with safranin-o staining after the first injection. To analyze cell kinetics or MSC properties, luciferase, LacZ, and GFP expressing synovial MSCs were used. To confirm the role of MSCs, species-specific microarray and PCR analyses were performed using human synovial MSCs. Results Histological analysis for femoral and tibial cartilage showed that a single injection was ineffective but weekly injections had significant chondroprotective effects for 12 weeks. Histological and flow-cytometric analyses of LacZ and GFP expressing synovial MSCs revealed that injected MSCs migrated mainly into the synovium and most of them retained their undifferentiated MSC properties though the migrated cells rapidly decreased. In vivo imaging analysis revealed that MSCs maintained in knees while weekly injection. Species-specific microarray and PCR analyses showed that the human mRNAs on day 1 for 21 genes increased over 50-fold, and increased the expressions of PRG-4, BMP-2, and BMP-6 genes encoding chondroprotective proteins, and TSG-6 encoding an anti-inflammatory one. Conclusion Not single but periodic injections of synovial MSCs maintained viable cells without losing their MSC properties in knees and inhibited osteoarthritis (OA) progression by secretion of trophic factors.
Abstract Background Little is known about correlates of vitamin D status in Asian populations. In this study, we established the prevalence of vitamin D sufficiency in the Murakami region (latitude ...N38°13′) in Niigata, Japan, and examined demographic, environmental, and lifestyle factors that might be associated with vitamin D sufficiency, with the aim of clarifying the relative contributions of previously described determinants of vitamin D status as well as identifying new determinants in this Japanese population. Methods This study involved a cross-sectional analysis of baseline data obtained from a cohort study conducted in 2011–2013. Participants were 9084 individuals aged between 40 and 74 years who provided blood samples for the determination of plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D 25(OH)D concentrations. Lifestyle information was obtained from 8498 participants, with some missing values regarding different lifestyle factors. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to obtain odds ratios for vitamin D sufficiency, which was defined as a plasma 25(OH)D concentration ≥ 75 nmol/L. Results The prevalence of vitamin D sufficiency (i.e., plasma 25(OH)D concentration ≥ 75 nmol/L) was 9.1%, and significant associations were observed with male gender (P < 0.0001; OR = 2.37, 95% CI: 1.84–3.05), older age (P for trend < 0.0001), lower BMI (P for trend < 0.0001), higher METs score (P for trend = 0.0138), higher vitamin D intake (P for trend = 0.0467), summer season (P for trend < 0.0001), longer duration outdoors (P for trend = 0.0026), no sunscreen use (P = 0.0135; OR = 1.40, 95% CI: 1.07–1.82), higher salmon consumption (P for trend < 0.0001), higher alcohol consumption (P for trend < 0.0001), and lower coffee consumption (P for trend = 0.0025). Unlike other populations previously reported, vitamin D sufficiency was associated with older age. Conclusions The prevalence of vitamin D sufficiency (i.e., 25OHD ≥ 75 nmol/L) was low (9.1%) in this Japanese population. A number of demographic, environmental, and lifestyle factors are associated with vitamin D sufficiency, and thus lifestyle modification may present an opportunity to achieve vitamin D sufficiency.
Processing magnetocaloric materials into magnetic refrigerant particles is an essential issue in developing high-performance magnetic refrigerators. Here, we succeed in stably producing ...magnetocaloric particles of the promising material HoAl2 by a newly devised method based on electrode induction melting gas atomization process. The particle size range is on the order of submillimeters, which is suitable for practical refrigeration systems. The resulting particles with less contamination have good morphological, magnetic, and magnetocaloric properties: (i) almost spherical shapes with few internal pores, (ii) a sharp ferromagnetic transition around 30 K, and (iii) a large magnetocaloric effect comparable to the bulk counterpart. These features suggest the HoAl2 gas-atomized particles have the potential of use as a magnetic refrigerant. The presented method can be applied not only to HoAl2 but also to other brittle magnetocaloric materials with high melting points, facilitating the production of various magnetic refrigerants needed to develop magnetic refrigerators for hydrogen liquefaction.
•Magnetic refrigerant particles were produced by a crucible-free gas atomization.•A sintered body is used as an electrode rod that is inductively melted.•The particle size is distributed in the range of 100–700 μm.•The resulting particles have good morphology and are less contaminated.•Magnetocaloric properties of the particles are similar to those of the bulk material.
Aim
To evaluate the in vitro effect of the novel adhesive monomer CMET, a calcium salt of 4‐methacryloxyethyl trimellitate (4‐MET), on the proliferation, mineralization and differentiation of ...odontoblast‐like cells, comparing with 4‐MET, calcium hydroxide (CH) and mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA).
Methodology
Rat odontoblast‐like MDPC‐23 cells were cultured in Dulbecco’s modified Eagle’s medium (DMEM) supplemented with 5% foetal bovine serum. The powder of four tested materials (CMET, 4‐MET, CH and MTA) was first dissolved in distilled water (dH2O) and then was diluted by DMEM to yield final concentrations. Solvent (dH2O) was used as a control. Cell viability was assessed using CCK‐8 assay. Real‐time RT‐PCR was used to quantify the mRNA expression of odontogenic markers, cytokines and integrins. Mineralization inducing capacity was evaluated by alkaline phosphatase (ALPase) activity and alizarin red S staining. Statistical analyses were performed using one‐way anova and post hoc Tukey’s HSD test, with the significance level at 1%.
Results
Cell viability was significantly greater in the CMET‐ (83 to 828 mmol L−1), CH‐ and MTA‐treated (low concentrations) groups than that in the control group (P < 0.01). Higher concentrations of each material decreased the viable cells to different extents (P < 0.01). CMET treatment augmented the expression of several integrin subunits and exhibited the highest mRNA expression levels of odontogenic markers among all groups (P < 0.01). CH and MTA treatment caused significantly greater upregulation of pro‐inflammatory cytokines expression than the other groups (P < 0.01). The calcific deposition of MDPC‐23 cells was dose‐dependently accelerated by the addition of CMET (P < 0.01); the enhancement of mineralization was also found in the fresh prepared CH and MTA treatments. Besides, CMET showed consistency in mineralization induction after 8 weeks storage. Exposure to SB202190, a specific p38 mitogen‐activated protein kinases inhibitor, significantly decreased the ALPase activity as well as the mineral deposition which was enhanced by CMET treatment (P < 0.01).
Conclusions
The novel bio‐active monomer had the lowest cytotoxicity among all groups and it induced the proliferation, mineralization and differentiation of odontoblast‐like cells under appropriate concentrations. This adhesive monomer possesses excellent biocompatibility and hence exhibits great potential in dentine regeneration.

Methods
A multicenter, non-randomized trial was conducted, with patients treated with PG or TG. We compared short- and long-term outcomes between these procedures.
Results
Between 2009 and 2014, we enrolled 254 patients from 22 institutions; data from 252 were included in the analysis. These 252 patients were assigned to either the PG (
n
= 159) or TG (
n
= 93) group. Percentage of body weight loss (%BWL) at 1 year after surgery, i.e., the primary endpoint, in the PG group was significantly less than that of the TG group (− 12.8% versus − 16.9%;
p
= 0.0001). For short-term outcomes, operation time was significantly shorter for PG than TG (252 min versus 303 min;
p
< 0.0001), but there were no group-dependent differences in blood loss and postoperative complications. For long-term outcomes, incidence of reflux esophagitis in the PG group was significantly higher than that of the TG group (14.5% versus 5.4%;
p
= 0.02), while there were no differences in the incidence of anastomotic stenosis between the two (5.7% versus 5.4%;
p
= 0.92). Overall patient survival rates were similar between the two groups (3-year survival rates: 96% versus 92% in the PG and TG groups, respectively;
p
= 0.49).
Conclusions
Patients who underwent PG were better able to control weight loss without worsening the prognosis, relative to those in the TG group. Optimization of a reconstruction method to reduce reflux in PG patients will be important.
