Interferon-alpha (IFN-α) producing capacity was measured in 47 patients with prostatic cancer by whole blood assay. The mean IFN-α producing capacity of prostatic cancer patients was 3657IU/ml, which ...indicated a significantly (p<0.005) lower value than that in healthy male aged 50 years or more. IFN-α producing capacity in patients with Stage D disease was lower than that with Stage A, B or C. The higher the grade of the disease, the lower tended to be the capacity. A certain relationship was suspected between IFN-α producing capacity and the prognosis of each patient. In particular, in patients with prostatic cancer in Stage D, the prognosis was worse in low IFN-α producing capacity group (<3000IU/ml) than in normal or high IFN-α producing capacity group (≥3000IU/ml). It was considered that IFN-α producing capacity might be useful in developing the prognosis of patients with prostatic cancer.

Over the last 18 years, patients with multiple gastric carcinoma were studied by using Moertel's principle. Of a total of 692 patients with gastric carcinoma, there were 24 (3.4%) with multiple ...gastric carcinoma, including 22 synchronous double lesions and 2 synchronous triple lesions. Seven patients had both primary and secondary lesions in the M-area. Secondary lesions were found to be in the early stages of cancer development. Only one case showed protrusion coupled with indentation. Histologically, 14 patients (58.3%) had double differentiated lesions. In 6 cases, secondary lesions in the C-area showed little histological differentiation. When we perform distal gastrectomy, it is important to refer to the C-area in detail before and during the operation.

1. The frequency (F, s
−1) of miniature endplate potentials and the quantal content (m) of endplate potentials were simultaneously measured intracellularly at mouse diaphragm endplates in a bath ...solution that contained 0.6 mM Ca
2+ ions and 5 mM Mg
2+ ions.
2.
2. Twin pulses at 4-ms intervals gave the quantal contents of the first (
m1) and second (
m2) responses. The ratio of m2/ml was taken as an indicator of the temporal facilitation of the release of transmitter.

3. Lead ions (Pb
2+; 10 μM), bis(
o-aminophenoxy)ethane-
N,
N,
N′,
N′-tetraacetic acid (BAPTA; loaded for 60 min at 200 μM), and chlortetracycline (CTC; loaded for 30 min at 80 μM) reduced the values of F and m2/ml. Pb
2+ ions and CTC reduced the value of m, whereas BAPTA did not. ω-Agatoxin (ωAGT; 10 ng/ml) reduced the value of m without affecting
F or
m2/
m1.

High density lipoproteins (HDL) may play an important role in removing cholesterol from peripheral tissue and deliver it to the liver, acting as a shuttle in reverse cholesterol transport. The mode ...of interaction between the liver and HDL, however, has not yet been clarified. We investigated catabolism of human HDL in a human hepatoma cell line Mahlavu. The binding of 125I-Iabeled HDL at 4°C was time-dependent and reached completion within 2hr. The observed binding rates of 125I-labeled HDL at 4°C and the uptake and degradation at 37°C indicated the presence of both specific and non-specific HDL binding sites. Non-specific binding occured in proportion to the concentration of 125I-Iabeled HDL. Specific binding of 125I-labeled HDL accounted for 60% (at 4°C) and 75% (at 37°C) of total binding capacity. The association and degradation of 125I-labeled HDL was inhibited by the addition of unlabeled HDL, but not LDL, suggesting HDL specificity. The lysosomal degradation of 125I-labeled HDL was time-dependent and inhibited only 10% and 20% by chloroquine at 50μM and 100μM concentrations, respectively. This finding suggested that HDL was metabolized through a non-lysosomal pathway. There was a marked difference in the degradation modes of 125I-labeled HDL between fibroblasts and Mahlavu cells. The degradation of 125I-labeled HDL by Mahlavu cells increased over time, while only a small portion of 125I-labeled HDL was degraded by fibroblasts. This data shows that hepatocytes such as Mahlavu cells have HDL receptors which are considerably different from those of fibroblasts. This cell line provides a good model for analyzing interactions between HDL and hepatocytes in humans.
One hundred and thirty-one gastric cancers in the cardiac region surgically treated at the department from 1980 to 1992 were classified into two groups: CE-cancers and C-cancers. In this study the ...clinicopathological charactaristics and therapeutic results of them were studied. Among the clinicopathological charactaristics, there were significant differences between them in gross type of the tumor, tumor size, microscopic depth, vessel invasion, microscopic lymph node metastasis, infiltrative growth, and microscopic stage. These findings suggest that there were more advanced cases in CE-cancers than C-cancers. Curative resection rate was significantly higher in C-cancers, and cummulative five-years survival rate was better in C-cancers (64.1%) than CE-cancers (34.8%). Cummulative survival rate of CE-cancers was studied in length of esophageal invasion, length of oral width, lymph node metastasis, tumor size, and microscopic depth. It was suggested that the grade of lymph node metastasis chiefly affected the prognosis of CE-cancers.
A liquid chromatographic method is described to determine simultaneously the following 11 synthetic antibacterial agents used in a fishery: nitrofuran derivatives furazolidone, nifurpirinol, ...difurazone, and furamizole; sulfa drugs sulfamerazine, sulfisozole, sulfamonomethoxine, and sulfadimethoxine; and, oxolinic, nalidixic, and piromidic acids. A Nucleosil C18 column was used with tetrahydrofuran-acetonitrile-phosphoric acid-water (29 + 1 + 0.06 + 69.94) as the mobile phase. Pretreatment of the fish meat sample with acetone extraction and alumina column cleanup gave good separation of the LC peaks without interference from any other components. Recovery of the antibacterial agents was ca 80%. The lower limit of detection of the drugs was 1-2 ng for 10 microL injection.
Sodium colistin methanesulfonate (CLM) was intravenously injected to male and female Wistar strain rats, once daily, at doses of 6.25mg, 12.5mg and 25mg/kg to examine the influences on their ...fertility and development of fetuses. Male rats were treated with CLM for more than 60 days before mating until copulation. Female rats were treated with CLM for 14 days before mating, furthermore the treatment was continued until day 7 of gestation. Results were given as follows; 1. CLM did not affect general condition, body weight, food consumption, copulation and pregnancy. 2. CLM did not affect general condition, body weight and food consumption in preganant rats. 3. There was no significant difference between the CLM treated groups and the control group in number of implantations, number of live fetuses, weight of live fetuses, sex ratio, number of resorptions, number of dead fetuses and weight of placentas. 4. No internal and external malformation as well as anomalous ossifications of fetuses were observed in any treated group. 5. The ossifications of cervical vertebral centra, epiphysis of the caudal vertebral and proximal diaphysis of the hind paw were delayed by treatment with CLM at dose of 25mg/kg. It can be concluded that CLM has no unfavourable influence on fertility and fetal development in rats. In this study, the maximum non-effect dose of CLM was 12.5mg/kg in rats.
