Abstract Obtaining an accurate diagnosis of odontogenic tumor-mimickers (nonodontogenic lesions masquerading as odontogenic lesions) and tumor-like lesions of the jawbones can be difficult and ...requires a multidisciplinary approach. Lack of familiarity with these disease processes may lead to uncertainty and errors in diagnosis, which increase the possibility of errors in treatment. Radiologists should be aware of the imaging appearances of lesions affecting the jawbones in order to provide a complete differential diagnosis and to guide clinicians in proper patient treatment. The morphologic characteristics of tumors and tumor-like lesions of the jawbones may provide key diagnostic information regarding the aggressive or nonaggressive biologic behavior of such lesions. In addition to imaging findings, thorough physical examination and, often, histologic analysis of biopsy specimens are required.
Condensing osteitis of the clavicle is a rare, benign, usually painful condition leading to sclerosis of the medial end of the clavicle. In the English language literature, this has only been ...reported in women since its original description by Brower et al. in 1974 1. We report a clavicular lesion occurring in a man that is clinically, radiographically, and histologically identical to described cases of condensing osteitis.
The purpose of this study was to assess and discuss the effects of old age and systemic diseases on complications related to the use of a pectoralis major myocutaneous flap (PMMF) for reconstruction ...in head and neck surgery. Eighty-four consecutive patients, operated on between January 1992 and December 1998, were included in the study. Of these patients, 47 were in relatively good condition, while 37were old and frail or affected by systemic diseases. Patients were monitored for complications during a follow-up of 2 years. All patients included in the study had very advanced squamous cell carcinomas (T3-T4) and reconstruction with PMMF was performed after a commando procedure, a total laryngectomy with partial pharyngectomy, or a composite resection. Necrosis of skin island was the most frequently encountered complication, but no surgical intervention was needed. Overall, complications occurred more frequently in patients with underlying pathologies, the risk ratio adjusted for age and sex being 2.94, but 95% confidence intervals were 0.99-8.65 and all complications were minor. In summary, we recommend the use of PMMF for immediate repair in difficult patients who have large oropharyngo-laryngeal excisions and radical neck dissections and who suffer concomitantly with various medical problems known to increase complication rates. PMMF proved to be suitable to give these patients good chances of a quick recovery with satisfactory aesthetic and functional results.

Although metabolic bone disorders are common, they may be difficult to distinguish on the basis of clinical and radiologic findings. Understanding their diverse manifestations on imaging studies may ...allow early diagnosis. This article discusses osteoporosis, osteomalacia, rickets, hyperparathyroidism, hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, renal osteodystrophy, and Paget disease, with emphasis on radiologic differential diagnosis.
Physiological analyses of climate effects in marine fishes were assessed. The data available for cod strongly suggested that the thermal window of the north-eastern Arctic population was shifted to ...the cold side of the temperature range when compared to cod from the North Sea. Sensitivity of the Arctic population to warming was higher than in North Sea cod. Limitations in aerobic capacity and in associated energy allocation towards lower and higher temperature extremes reduced the exploitation of protein synthesis capacity. It was observed that the eelpout populations in the German Wadden Sea were experiencing a population decline due to the direct effect of summer extreme temperatures on aerobic performance.
De novoexpression of B7-1 impaired tumorigenicity of TRAMP-C2 mouse prostate adenocarcinoma (TRAMP-C2/B7), but it did not elicit a protective response against TRAMP-C2 parental tumor, unless afterin ...vitrotreatment with IFN-γ. TRAMP-C2 cells secrete TGF-β and show low MHC-I expression. Treatment with IFN-γ increased MHC-I expression by induction of some APM components and antagonizing the immunosuppressant activity of TGF-β. Thus, immunization with TRAMP-C2/B7 conferred protection against TRAMP-C2-derived tumors in function of the IFN-γ-mediated fine-tuned modulation of either APM expression or TGF-β signaling. To explore possible clinical translation, we delivered IFN-γ to TRAMP-C2 tumor site by means of genetically engineered MSCs secreting IFN-γ.

Human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1) infects cells by membrane fusion that is mediated by the envelope proteins gp120/gp41 and the cellular receptors CD4 and CCR5. During this process, some ...conserved viral epitopes are temporarily exposed and may induce a neutralizing antibody response when fixed in the fusogenic conformation. These transient structures are conserved and may be effective antigens for use in an anti-HIV-1 vaccine.
In this study we tested different conditions of preparation of fusion complexes inducing neutralizing antibodies against both R5 and X4 tropic HIV-1 strains. Cell lines expressing HIV-1 gp120/gp41 and CD4–CCR5 were prepared and conditions for producing fusion complexes were tested. Complexes produced at different temperature and fixative combinations were used to immunize mice. Results indicated that (a) fusion complexes prepared at either 21
°C, 30
°C or 37
°C were immunogenic and induced neutralizing antibodies against both R5 and X4 HIV-1 heterologous isolates; (b) after extensive purification of antibodies there was no cytotoxic effect; (c) complexes prepared at 37
°C were more immunogenic and induced higher titers of neutralizing antibodies than complexes prepared at either 21
°C or 30
°C; (d) the fixative used did not affect the titer of neutralizing antibodies except for glutaraldehyde which was ineffective; (e) the neutralizing activity was retained after CD4–CCR5 antibody removal.
The production of higher titers of neutralizing antibody with fusion complexes prepared at 37
°C, as compared to lower temperatures, may be related to the induction of antibodies against many different conformation intermediates that subsequently act synergistically at different steps in the fusion process.
The objective of this article was to offer a better characterization of the typical clinical presentation, radiologic findings, histology, treatment approaches, and differential diagnosis of cystic ...angiomatosis, a rare condition of which previous reports have been confusing because of unclear diagnostic criteria, different classifications, and variations in terminology. A case report using the improved imaging techniques of computed tomography scanning is presented in addition to an analysis and review of the previous literature, which relied heavily on plain film radiography, biopsy, and necropsy for diagnosis. A case report of a 26-year-old man initially symptomatic at age 12 is presented. Although a rare condition, cystic angiomatosis must be considered in pediatric and young adult patients presenting with diffuse, multifocal, cystic skeletal lesions, with or without visceral involvement.
