This paper reports inclusive and differential measurements of the $t\bar{t}$ charge asymmetry $A_{\textrm{C}}$ in 20.3 fb$^{-1}$ of $\sqrt{s} = 8$ TeV $pp$ collisions recorded by the ATLAS experiment ...at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Three differential measurements are performed as a function of the invariant mass, transverse momentum and longitudinal boost of the $t\bar{t}$ system. The $t\bar{t}$ pairs are selected in the single-lepton channels ($e$ or $\mu$) with at least four jets, and a likelihood fit is used to reconstruct the $t\bar{t}$ event kinematics. A Bayesian unfolding procedure is performed to infer the asymmetry at parton level from the observed data distribution. The inclusive $t\bar{t}$ charge asymmetry is measured to be $A_{\textrm{C}} = 0.009 \pm 0.005$ (stat.$+$syst.). The inclusive and differential measurements are compatible with the values predicted by the Standard Model.

First-line diagnostic investigations for endometriosis are physical examination and pelvic ultrasound. The second-line investigations are: targeted pelvic examination performed by an expert ...clinician, transvaginal ultrasound performed by an expert physician sonographer (radiologist or gynaecologist), and pelvic MRI. Management of endometriosis is recommended when the disease has a functional impact. Recommended first-line hormonal therapies for the management of endometriosis-related pain are combined hormonal contraceptives (CHCs) or the 52mg levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (IUS). There is no evidence base on which to recommend systematic preoperative hormonal therapy solely to prevent surgical complications or facilitate surgery. After surgery for endometriosis, a CHC or 52mg levonorgestrel-releasing IUS is recommended as first-line treatment when pregnancy is not desired. In the event of failure of the initial treatment, recurrence, or multiorgan involvement, a multidisciplinary team meeting is recommended, involving physicians, surgeons and other professionals. A laparoscopic approach is recommended for surgical treatment of endometriosis. HRT can be offered to postmenopausal women who have undergone surgical treatment for endometriosis. Antigonadotrophic hormonal therapy is not recommended for patients with endometriosis and infertility to increase the chances of spontaneous pregnancy, including postoperatively. Fertility preservation options must be discussed with patients undergoing surgery for ovarian endometriomas.
A combined search for the Standard Model Higgs boson with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC using datasets corresponding to integrated luminosities from 1.04 fb-1 to 4.9 fb-1 of pp collisions collected ...at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV is presented. The Higgs boson mass ranges 112.9-115.5 GeV, 131-238 GeV and 251-466 GeV are excluded at the 95% confidence level (CL), while the range 124-519 GeV is expected to be excluded in the absence of a signal. An excess of events is observed around mH ~ 126 GeV with a local significance of 3.5 standard deviations (sigma). The local significance of H -> gamma gamma, H -> ZZ(*) -> lll'l' and H -> WW(*) -> lvl'v, the three most sensitive channels in this mass range, are 2.8 sigma, 2.1 sigma and 1.4 sigma, respectively. The global probability for the background to produce such a fluctuation anywhere in the explored Higgs boson mass range 110-600 GeV is estimated to be ~1.4% or, equivalently 2.2 sigma.
The purely electroweak (EW) cross section for the production of two jets in association with a Z boson, in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 8 TeV, is measured using data recorded by the CMS ...experiment at the CERN LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 inverse femtobarns. The electroweak cross section for the lljj final state (with l = e or mu and j representing the quarks produced in the hard interaction) in the kinematic region defined by Mll > 50 GeV, Mjj > 120 GeV, transverse momentum ptj > 25 GeV, and pseudorapidity abs(etaj) < 5, is found to be sigmaEW(lljj) = 174 +/- 15 (stat) +/- 40 (syst) fb, in agreement with the standard model prediction. The associated jet activity of the selected events is studied, in particular in a signal-enriched region of phase space, and the measurements are found to be in agreement with QCD predictions.
A total of 30-50% of early breast cancer (EBC) patients considered as high risk using standard prognostic factors develop metastatic recurrence despite standard adjuvant systemic treatment. A means ...to better predict clinical outcome is needed to optimize and individualize therapeutic decisions. To identify a protein signature correlating with metastatic relapse, we performed surface-enhanced laser desorption/ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry profiling of early postoperative serum from 81 high-risk EBC patients. Denatured and fractionated serum samples were incubated with IMAC30 and CM10 ProteinChip arrays. Several protein peaks were differentially expressed according to clinical outcome. By combining partial least squares and logistic regression methods, we built a multiprotein model that correctly predicted outcome in 83% of patients. The 5-year metastasis-free survival in 'good prognosis' and 'poor prognosis' patients as defined using the multiprotein index were strikingly different (83 and 22%, respectively; P<0.0001, log-rank test). In a multivariate Cox regression including conventional pathological factors and multiprotein index, the latter retained the strongest independent prognostic significance for metastatic relapse. Major components of the multiprotein index included haptoglobin, C3a complement fraction, transferrin, apolipoprotein C1 and apolipoprotein A1. Therefore, postoperative serum protein pattern may have an important prognostic value in high-risk EBC.

The CMS collaboration is building the high-granularity calorimeter (HGCAL) for the endcap regions as part of its planned upgrade for the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC). The calorimeter data will form ...part of the Level-1 trigger (L1T) of the CMS experiment, reducing the event rate from the nominal 40 MHz down to 750 kHz with a latency of 12.5 microseconds. Among the 6 million readout channel of this 5D imaging calorimeter, 1 million "trigger channels" are read at 40 MHz, presenting a significant challenge in terms of data processing for the back-end trigger primitive system. The amount of data produced scales up to 50 Tb/s, an order of magnitude above what is currently handled at CMS. The HGCAL trigger primitive generation (TPG) system is organized in 2 stages: the first stage receiving the front-end data and organizing them into a Time-Multiplexed fashion before transmitting them to the second processing stage, where the data associated with a 120-degree sector of the HGCAL are used to reconstruct particle associated showers in a full depth 3D view. The system is instrumented with 63 ATCA electronic boards equipped with Xilinx Ultrascale FPGAs and SoC controllers, as well as high-speed optical links (16 Gb/s). We present here the technological challenge of implementing such a system and designing the firmware used in reconstructing 3D clusters. Together with tracking information, which will also be available at L1T, particle-flow reconstruction techniques and other sophisticated machine learning approach can be contemplated. We present here the HGCAL TPG system architecture design and the ongoing developments, prototyping and testing. Outlook towards modern technological approach to large data volume processing will be discussed.

The cross sections are measured as a function of the photon-proton centre-of-mass energy in the range 25<W ^sub γp^<110 GeV. Differential cross sections dσ/dt, where t is the squared four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex, are measured in the range |t|<1.2 GeV^sup 2^ for the elastic process and |t|<8 GeV^sup 2^ for proton dissociation. The results are compared to other measurements. The W ^sub γp^ and t-dependences are parametrised using phenomenological fits.
