In Bodyminds Reimagined Sami Schalk traces how black women's speculative fiction complicates the understanding of bodyminds—the intertwinement of the mental and the physical—in the context of race, ...gender, and (dis)ability. Bridging black feminist theory with disability studies, Schalk demonstrates that this genre's political potential lies in the authors' creation of bodyminds that transcend reality's limitations. She reads (dis)ability in neo- slavenarratives by Octavia Butler ( Kindred ) and Phyllis Alesia Perry ( Stigmata ) not only as representing the literal injuries suffered under slavery, but also as a metaphor for the legacy of racial violence. The fantasy worlds in works by N. K. Jemisin, Shawntelle Madison, and Nalo Hopkinson—where werewolves have obsessive-compulsive-disorder and blind demons can see magic—destabilize social categories and definitions of the human, calling into question the very nature of identity. In these texts, as well as in Butler's Parable series, able-mindedness and able-bodiedness are socially constructed and upheld through racial and gendered norms. Outlining (dis)ability's centrality to speculative fiction, Schalk shows how these works open new social possibilities while changing conceptualizations of identity and oppression through nonrealist contexts.
Arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC) is considered a rare disorder resulting in multiple congenital contractures in two or more areas. Considerable literature is available on managing the ...contractures during an affected child's development but little information is available to those managing these ongoing issues in adulthood. Due to the heterogeneity etiological factors and presentation of AMC, and the small sample sizes of previous studies, it has been difficult to generalize results to the adult population. This current study presents the several steps taken to create an international AMC database for adults to populate with their own data over time. The methods included a scoping review of the literature for valid and reliable outcome measures used for AMC, a Delphi methodology to create the database with a team of clinicians, researchers and patients, a Beta testing of the database, and a final launch of the Adult AMC Registry. This registry includes 48 nonstandardized questions and 12 standardized questionnaires. It takes 35-45 min for a participant to complete. A shorter version will be created for participants to complete for years 2 and 3, followed by this longer version every 4 years. The protocol for referring English-speaking patients and access to the registry is provided. Data will be reviewed every year to ensure quality. The registry will be maintained for a minimum of 10 years and data will be comprehensively analyzed every 5 years. Our goal is to have 500 adults with AMC from around the world as participants.
In the history of astronomy, major advances in our understanding of the Universe have come from dramatic improvements in our ability to accurately measure astronomical quantities. Aided by rapid ...progress in information technology, current sky surveys are changing the way we view and study the Universe. Next- generation surveys will maintain this revolutionary progress. We focus here on the most ambitious survey currently planned in the visible band, the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST). LSST will have unique survey capability in the faint time domain. The LSST design is driven by four main science themes: constraining dark energy and dark matter, taking an inventory of the Solar System, exploring the transient optical sky, and mapping the Milky Way. It will be a large, wide-field ground-based system designed to obtain multiple images covering the sky that is visible from Cerro Pachon in Northern Chile. The current baseline design, with an 8.4 m (6.5 m effective) primary mirror, a 9.6 deg2 field of view, and a 3,200 Megapixel camera, will allow about 10,000 square degrees of sky to be covered using pairs of 15-second exposures in two photometric bands every three nights on average. The system is designed to yield high image quality, as well as superb astrometric and photometric accuracy. The survey area will include 30,000 deg2 with ? < +34.5? , and will be imaged multiple times in six bands, ugrizy, covering the wavelength range 320-1050 nm. About 90% of the observing time will be devoted to a deep- wide-fast survey mode which will observe a 20,000 deg2 region about 1000 times in the six bands during the anticipated 10 years of operation. These data will result in databases including 10 billion galaxies and a similar number of stars, and will serve the majority of science programs. The remaining 10% of the observing time will be allocated to special programs such as Very Deep and Very Fast time domain surveys. We describe how the LSST science drivers led to these choices of system parameters.
U istoriji astronomije, veliki pomaci u nasem razumevanju Vasione cesto su proizilazili iz dramaticnog napretka u mogucnostima preciznog merenja astronomskih velicina. Zahvaljuju i brzom razvoju informacionih tehnologija, savremeni pregledi neba menjaju nacin na koji posmatramo i proucavamo Vasionu. Pregledi neba sledece generacije nastavice ovim putem revolucionarnog napretka. U ovom radu usredsredjujemo se na najambiciozniji planirani projekat pregleda neba u vidljivom delu spektra, Veliki sinopticki teleskop za pregled neba (skr. LSST, od eng. Large Synoptic Survey Telescope). LSST ce imati jedinstvene mogucnosti pregleda u kratkim vremenskim intervalima. Dizajn LSST odredjuju cetiri primarna naucna zadatka: ogranicavanje na parametre vezane za tamnu energiju i tamnu materiju, pravljenje inventara objekata Suncevog sistema, istrazivace kratkotrajnih pojava na nebu u vidljivom delu spektra i mapiranje Mlecnog puta. Teleskop ce predstavljati veliki, zemaljski, sirokougaoni sistem dizajniran za dobijanje visestrukih snimaka koji bi u potpunosti pokrili nebo vidljivo iz mesta Cerro Pachon u severnom Cileu. Aktuelni osnovni dizajn predvidja primarno ogledalo precnika 8.4 m (efektivno 6.5 m), vidno polje od 9.6 kvadratnih stepeni i kameru sa 3200 megapiksela, sto ce omoguciti da se u dve ekspozicije od po 15 sekundi, u dva fotometrijska filtera, za tri noci u proseku, pokrije ukupno 10 000 kvadratnih stepeni neba. Sistem je dizajniran tako da obezbedi visok kvalitet snimaka, kao i izuzetnu astrometrijsku i fotometrijsku tacnost. Pregled ce pokriti ukupnu povrsinu od 30 000 kvadratnih stepeni, u oblasti deklinacija ? < +34.5? , snimaju i vise puta u sest filtera, ugrizy, koji pokrivaju oblasti talasnih duzina od 320-1050 nm. Oko 90% posmatrackog vremena bice iskorisceno za rad u tzv. dubokom-sirokom-brzom modu, pri cemu ce se, tokom predvidjenih 10 godina rada teleskopa, otprilike 1000 puta u sest filtera posmatrati oblast od 20 000 kvadratnih stepeni. Prikupljeni podaci ce biti pohranjeni u bazu koja ce ukljucivati oko 10 milijardi galaksija i priblizno isti broj zvezda, i koja ce sluziti vecini naucnih programa. Preostalih 10% posmatrackog vremena predvidjeno je za posebne programe kao sto su Vrlo Duboki i Vrlo Brzi pregledi. Ovde opisujemo kako se od naucnih zadataka programa LSST doslo do ovih izbora parametara sistema.

The objective of the MONARC project is to identify baseline computing models that could provide viable solutions meeting the data analysis needs of the LHC experiments. A powerful and flexible set of ...simulation tools has been developed to model the performance of distributed computing resources for a set of reconstruction and analysis tasks. In this paper we report the validation of the simulation tools using the testbed environments with Objectivity/DB over LAN and WAN connections. A simple and effective way to parameterize and evaluate the concurrent database access over network has been established.
Most distributed applications are based on architectural models that do not involve real-time knowledge of network status and of their network usage. Moreover the new “network aware” architectures ...are still under development and their design is not yet complete. We considered, as a use case, an application using ODBMS (Objectivity/DB) for the distributed analysis of experimental data. The dynamic usage of system and network resources at host and application levels has been measured in different client/server configurations, and on several LAN and WAN layouts. The aim was to study the application efficiency and behavior versus the network characteristics and conditions.
The most interesting results of the LAN and WAN tests are described. System bottlenecks and limitations have been identified, and efficient working conditions in the different scenarios have been defined. The behavior observed when moving away from the optimal working conditions is also described.

Der Radiuskopf ist Teil der komplexen Gelenkmechanik des Ellenbogengelenks. Frakturen des Radiuskopfes machen etwa ein Drittel aller Ellenbogenfrakturen aus. Ziel der Therapie von ...Radiuskopffrakturen ist der Erhalt der Gelenkkinematik sowie der Stabilität im Ellenbogengelenk. Um dies zu erreichen, sind bei dislozierten Radiuskopffrakturen eine offene Reposition und eine Osteosynthese notwendig. Lässt sich der Radiuskopf durch Osteosynthese nicht anatomisch rekonstruieren, besteht die Möglichkeit einer Radiuskopfresektion oder der Implantation einer Radiuskopfprothese. Der vorliegende Beitrag gibt eine Übersicht über die aktuellen Empfehlungen und die Evidenz zur Versorgung von Radiuskopffrakturen mittels Radiuskopfprothese. Es wird hierbei auf die Vor- und Nachteile der Implantation einer Radiuskopfprothese bei nicht rekonstruierbaren Radiuskopffrakturen, die alternative Möglichkeit der Radiuskopfresektion sowie die Limitationen der Radiuskopfprothese eingegangen.
