Deep-inelastic scattering, in the laboratory and on the lattice, is most instructive for understanding how the nucleon is built from quarks and gluons. The long-term goal is to compute the associated ...structure functions from first principles. So far this has been limited to model calculations. In this Letter we propose a new method to compute the structure functions directly from the virtual, all-encompassing Compton amplitude, utilizing the operator product expansion. This overcomes issues of renormalization and operator mixing, which so far have hindered lattice calculations of power corrections and higher moments.
Tendons have uniquely high tensile strength, critical to their function to transfer force from muscle to bone. When injured, their innate healing response results in aberrant matrix organization and ...functional properties. Efforts to regenerate tendon are challenged by limited understanding of its normal development. Consequently, there are few known markers to assess tendon formation and parameters to design tissue engineering scaffolds. We profiled mechanical and biological properties of embryonic tendon and demonstrated functional properties of developing tendon are not wholly reflected by protein expression and tissue morphology. Using force volume-atomic force microscopy, we found that nano- and microscale tendon elastic moduli increase nonlinearly and become increasingly spatially heterogeneous during embryonic development. When we analyzed potential biochemical contributors to modulus, we found statistically significant but weak correlation between elastic modulus and collagen content, and no correlation with DNA or glycosaminoglycan content, indicating there are additional contributors to mechanical properties. To investigate collagen cross-linking as a potential contributor, we inhibited Iysyl oxidase-mediated collagen cross-linking, which significantly reduced tendon elastic modulus without affecting collagen morphology or DNA, glycosaminoglycan, and collagen content. This suggests that Iysyl oxidase-mediated cross-linking plays a significant role in the development of embryonic tendon functional properties and demonstrates that changes in cross-links alter mechanical properties without affecting matrix content and organization. Taken together, these data demonstrate the importance of functional markers to assess tendon development and provide a profile of tenogenic mechanical properties that may be implemented in tissue engineering scaffold design to mechanoregulate new tendon regeneration.

Recently, research has focused on characterizing the content of extracellular vesicles (EVs), particularly microRNAs (miRNAs), for diagnostic use. Here, we describe the most recent work on EVs-miRNAs biomarkers discovery for conditions that commonly affect premature neonates.
Accessing hadronic form factors at large momentum transfers has traditionally presented a challenge for lattice QCD simulations. Here, we demonstrate how a novel implementation of the ...Feynman-Hellmann method can be employed to calculate hadronic form factors in lattice QCD at momenta much higher than previously accessible. Our simulations are performed on a single set of gauge configurations with three flavors of degenerate mass quarks corresponding to mπ≈470 MeV. We are able to determine the electromagnetic form factors of the pion and nucleon up to approximately 6 GeV2, with results for the ratio of the electric and magnetic form factors of the proton at our simulated quark mass agreeing well with experimental results.

We compute the electric dipole moment d(n) of the neutron from a fully dynamical simulation of lattice QCD with 2+1 flavors of clover fermions and nonvanishing θ term. The latter is rotated into a ...pseudoscalar density in the fermionic action using the axial anomaly. To make the action real, the vacuum angle θ is taken to be purely imaginary. The physical value of dd(n) is obtained by analytic continuation. We find d(n)=-3.9(2)(9)×10(-16) θ e cm, which, when combined with the experimental limit on d(n), leads to the upper bound |θ|≲7.4×10(-11).
Biogenic sources contribute to cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) in the clean marine atmosphere, but few measurements exist to constrain climate model simulations of their importance. The chemical ...composition of individual atmospheric aerosol particles showed two types of sulfate-containing particles in clean marine air masses in addition to mass-based Estimated Salt particles. Both types of sulfate particles lack combustion tracers and correlate, for some conditions, to atmospheric or seawater dimethyl sulfide (DMS) concentrations, which means their source was largely biogenic. The first type is identified as New Sulfate because their large sulfate mass fraction (63% sulfate) and association with entrainment conditions means they could have formed by nucleation in the free troposphere. The second type is Added Sulfate particles (38% sulfate), because they are preexisting particles onto which additional sulfate condensed. New Sulfate particles accounted for 31% (7 cm
) and 33% (36 cm
) CCN at 0.1% supersaturation in late-autumn and late-spring, respectively, whereas sea spray provided 55% (13 cm
) in late-autumn but only 4% (4 cm
) in late-spring. Our results show a clear seasonal difference in the marine CCN budget, which illustrates how important phytoplankton-produced DMS emissions are for CCN in the North Atlantic.
Polyacenes among other polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were suggested to be abundant in the dense regions of the interstellar medium (ISM) and to be responsible for some of the diffuse ...interstellar bands (DIBs). The identification of DIB carriers requires the laboratory spectra of cold cations for comparison with astrophysical observations. . This makes the detection of tetracene

in the ISM much easier compared to other studied polyacene cations. The four absorption bands of tetracene
+
that are the best suited for the detection in observational spectra appeared at 859, 850.9, 838.8, and 827.3 nm. We did not find any DIBs at these positions. However, the observational spectra in this region from ground-based telescopes are heavily contaminated with telluric absorption bands, which greatly complicates the detection of DIBs. Comparison with observations performed by space telescopes is expected to significantly increase the sensitivity of the detection of the DIBs that could potentially be assigned to tetracene
