Heterogeneous ice formation induced by volcanic ash from the Eyjafjallajökull volcano eruption in April 2010 is investigated based on the combination of a cirrus cloud observed with a backscatter ...lidar over Jülich (western Germany) and model simulations along backward trajectories. The microphysical properties of the cirrus cloud could only be represented by the microphysical model under the assumption of an enhanced number of efficient ice nuclei originating from the volcanic eruption. The ice nuclei (IN) concentration determined by lidar measurements directly before and after cirrus cloud occurrence implies a value of around 0.1 cm−3 (in comparison normal IN conditions: 0.01 cm−3). This leads to a cirrus cloud with rather small ice crystals having a mean radius of 12 μm and a modification of the ice particle number (0.08 cm−3 instead of 3 × 10−4 cm−3 under normal IN conditions). The effectiveness of ice nuclei was estimated by the use of the microphysical model and the backward trajectories based on ECMWF data, establishing a freezing threshold of around 105% relative humidity with respect to ice in a temperature range from −45 to −55 °C . Only with these highly efficient ice nuclei was it possible for the cirrus cloud to be formed in a slightly supersaturated environment.
It is shown that the dielectric relaxation in barrier coatings may be interpreted in terms of a ‘two-step’ continuous time random walk in one dimension. This was proved by comparison of the results ...using a normalised constant phase element whereby the evaluated coating parameters are in good agreement using both models. An analysis of the frequency dependence of the evaluated coating parameters suggests that the coating capacity calculated by means of a Young–Goehr impedance can be considered to represent a kind of border value for the normalised CPE—as well as for the random walk model. Comparing the results of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and relaxation voltammetry one has to take into account the frequency dependence of the calculated coating parameters. Furthermore, an example is given which demonstrates that one can obtain equal results choosing the same frequency range and the same model using both techniques.
We explore the potential of ozone observations to constrain transport processes in the tropical tropopause layer (TTL), and contrast it with insights that can be obtained from water vapour. Global ...fields from Halogen Occultation Experiment (HALOE) and in-situ observations are predicted using a backtrajectory approach that captures advection, instantaneous freeze-drying and photolytical ozone production. Two different representations of transport (kinematic and diabatic 3-month backtrajectories based on ERA-Interim data) are used to evaluate the sensitivity to differences in transport. Results show that mean profiles and seasonality of both tracers can be reasonably reconstructed. Water vapour predictions are similar for both transport representations, but predictions for ozone are systematically higher for kinematic transport. Compared to global HALOE observations, the diabatic model prediction underestimates the vertical ozone gradient. Comparison of the kinematic prediction with observations obtained during the tropical SCOUT-O3 campaign shows a large high bias above 390 K potential temperature. We show that ozone predictions and vertical dispersion of the trajectories are highly correlated, rendering ozone an interesting tracer for aspects of transport to which water vapour is not sensitive. We show that dispersion and mean upwelling have similar effects on ozone profiles, with slower upwelling and larger dispersion both leading to higher ozone concentrations. Analyses of tropical upwelling based on mean transport characteristics, and model validation have to take into account this ambiguity between tropical ozone production and in-mixing from the stratosphere. In turn, ozone provides constraints on transport in the TTL and lower stratosphere that cannot be obtained from water vapour.
Proton therapy is actively and repeatedly discussed within the framework of particle therapy for the treatment of prostate cancer (PC). The argument in favor of treating the prostate with protons is ...partly financial: given that small volumes are treated, treatment times are low, resulting in a hypothetical high patient throughput. However, such considerations should not form the basis of medical decision-making. There are also physical and biological arguments which further support the use of particle therapy for PC. The only relevant randomized data currently available is the study by Zietman and colleagues, comparing a high to a low proton boost, resulting in a significant increase in PSA-free survival in the experimental (high dose) arm (1). With modern photon treatments and image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT), equally high doses can be applied with photons and, thus, a randomized trial comparing high-end photons to protons is warranted. For high-linear energy transfer (LET) particles, such as carbon ions, the increase in relative biological effectiveness could potentially convert into an improvement in outcome. Additionally, through the physical differences of protons and carbon ions, the steeper dose gradient with carbon ions and the lack of beam broadening in the carbon beam lead to a superior dose distribution supporting the idea of hypofractionation. Biological and clinical data are emerging, however, has practice-changing evidence already arrived?
The relationship between the static stability N2 and the mixing in the tropopause inversion layer (TIL) is investigated using in situ aircraft observations during SPURT (trace gas transport in the ...tropopause region). With a new simple measure of mixing degree based on O3‐CO tracer correlations, high N2 related to an enhanced mixing in the extratropical mixing layer is found. This relation becomes even more pronounced if fresh mixing events are excluded, indicating that mixing within the TIL occurs on a larger than synoptic timescale. A temporal variance analysis of N2 suggests that processes responsible for the composition of the TIL take place on seasonal timescales. Using radiative transfer calculations, we simulate the influence of a change in O3 and H2O vertical gradients on the temperature gradient and thus on the static stability above the tropopause, which are contrasted in an idealized nonmixed atmosphere and in a reference mixed atmosphere. The results show that N2 increases with enhanced mixing degree near the tropopause. At the same time, the temperature above the tropopause decreases together with the development of an inversion and the TIL. In the idealized case of nonmixed profiles the TIL vanishes. Furthermore, the results suggest that H2O plays a major role in maintaining the temperature inversion and the TIL structure compared to O3. The results substantiate the link between the extratropical mixing layer and the TIL.
This study addresses, through two types of experiments, the potential for the oceans to act as a source of atmospheric ice-nucleating particles (INPs). The INP concentration via deposition mode ...nucleation was measured in situ at a coastal site in British Columbia in August 2013. The INP concentration at conditions relevant to cirrus clouds (i.e., −40 °C and relative humidity with respect to ice, RHice = 139%) ranged from 0.2 L−1 to 3.3 L−1. Correlations of the INP concentrations with levels of anthropogenic tracers (i.e., CO, SO2, NOx, and black carbon) and numbers of fluorescent particles do not indicate a significant influence from anthropogenic sources or submicron bioaerosols, respectively. Additionally, the INPs measured in the deposition mode showed a poor correlation with the concentration of particles with sizes larger than 500 nm, which is in contrast with observations made in the immersion freezing mode. To investigate the nature of particles that could have acted as deposition INP, laboratory experiments with potential marine aerosol particles were conducted under the ice-nucleating conditions used in the field. At −40 °C, no deposition activity was observed with salt aerosol particles (sodium chloride and two forms of commercial sea salt: Sigma-Aldrich and Instant Ocean), particles composed of a commercial source of natural organic matter (Suwannee River humic material), or particle mixtures of sea salt and humic material. In contrast, exudates from three phytoplankton (Thalassiosira pseudonana, Nanochloris atomus, and Emiliania huxleyi) and one marine bacterium (Vibrio harveyi) exhibited INP activity at low RHice values, down to below 110%. This suggests that the INPs measured at the field site were of marine biological origins, although we cannot rule out other sources, including mineral dust.

Mesopic threshold detection sensitivity was investigated by projecting quasi-monochromatic incremental targets with 22 centroid wavelengths between 422 nm and 652 nm onto different backgrounds. Every ...detection target was observed by at least nine subjects under eight different viewing conditions: two mesopic luminance levels (0.1 cd/m2; 1 cd/m2) and four eccentricities of target appearance off the visual axis (0°, 2.65°, 10° and 20°). Results were expressed in terms of absolute detection sensitivity values, i.e. inverse increment radiance values for each target at the detection threshold in sr·m2·W−1 units. In this part, the experimental method is described, and the dataset is analysed in terms of retinal mechanisms.
Abstract Human bone marrow-derived stem cells (hMSCs) are a major source of osteoprogenitors. Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), a glycoprotein constitutively produced by hMSCs, is reported to act on ...differentiated osteoblasts and also osteoclasts. Moreover, HGF has been shown by us and others to enhance osteoblastic differentiation from hMSCs. Typically, the pro-differentiation effects of HGF have required cooperative action with regulatory factors such as vitamin D or bone matrix material. Here, we have pursued the molecular mechanisms underlying the osteogenic effect of HGF on hMSCs, the principal precursors to bone forming cells. HGF treatment of hMSCs reduced the cell number over time and increased G1/S cell-cycle arrest compared to control (non-treated) cells. RT-qPCR showed treatment with HGF increased gene expression of the cell-cycle inhibitors p53, p21, and p27, possibly explaining the cell growth inhibition and G1 arrest, a step critical to phenotypic differentiation. Transfection of siRNA specific for cMet, the HGF receptor, eliminated the HGF anti-proliferation effect on hMSCs and the HGF-mediated increase in p53, p21, and p27, strongly supporting a role for these cell-cycle inhibitors in HGF's regulation of hMSCs. HGF in combination with a known inducer of osteogenic differentiation, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, significantly increased cell maturation/differentiation as indicated by an increase in several osteoblast markers. Taken together these results demonstrate that HGF significantly enhances hMSC osteoblast differentiation by 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D.
