Structural, optical, magnetic, and electrical properties of zinc oxide (henceforth, ZO) and iron doped zinc oxide (henceforth, ZOFe) films deposited by sputtering technique are described by means of ...Rutherford backscattering spectrometry, grazing incidence X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope (SEM), UV–Vis spectrometer, vibrating sample magnetometer, and room temperature electrical conductivity, respectively. GIXRD analysis revealed that the films were polycrystalline with a hexagonal phase, and all films had a preferred (002) c-axis orientation. The lattice parameters a and c of the wurtzite structure were calculated for all films. The a parameter remains almost the same (around 3 Å), while c parameter varies slightly with increasing Fe content from 5.18 to 5.31 Å throughout the co-deposition process. The optical gap for undoped and doped ZO was obtained from different numerical methods based on the experimental data and it was increased with the increment of the concentration of Fe dopant from 3.26 eV to 3.35 eV. The highest magnetization (4.26 × 10−4 emu/g) and lowest resistivity (4.6 × 107 Ω·cm) values of the ZO films were found to be at an Fe content of 5% at. %. An explanation for the dependence of the optical, magnetic, and electrical properties of the samples on the Fe concentrations is also given. The enhanced magnetic properties such as saturated magnetization and coercivity with optical properties reveal that Fe doped ZO thin films are suitable for magneto-optoelectronic (optoelectronic and spintronics) device applications.
Silver nanostructures are widely employed for Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) characterizations owing to their excellent properties of field confinement in plasmonic resonances. However, the ...strong tendency to oxidation at room temperature of these substrates may represent a major limitation to their performances. In the present work, we investigated in detail the effects of oxidation on the SERS response of a peculiar kind of Ag nanostructured substrates,
i.e.
, bi-dimensional ordered arrangements of Ag nanoprisms synthesized by nanosphere lithography. Particularly, wavelength-scanned SERS measurements were performed on Ag nanoprism arrays with a different level of oxidation to determine the SERS enhancement curves as a function of the excitation wavelength around the dipolar plasmonic resonance of the arrays. The experimental results were compared with those obtained by finite elements method simulations. With this approach, we were able to decouple the effects of spectral shift and decrease of the maximum value of the SERS enhancement observed for the different oxidation conditions. The results could be interpreted taking into account the inhomogeneities of the electromagnetic field distribution around the Ag nanostructures, as demonstrated by the simulations.

Plasmonic sensors based on ordered arrays of nanoprisms are optimized in terms of their geometric parameters like size, height, aspect ratio for Au, Ag or Au0.5–Ag0.5 alloy to be used in the visible ...or near IR spectral range. The two figures of merit used for the optimization are the bulk and the surface sensitivity: the first is important for optimizing the sensing to large volume analytes whereas the latter is more important when dealing with small bio-molecules immobilized in close proximity to the nanoparticle surface. A comparison is made between experimentally obtained nanoprisms arrays and simulated ones by using Finite Elements Methods (FEM) techniques.

Arrays of nanoholes in metal are important plasmonic devices, proposed for applications spanning from biosensing to communications. In this work, we show that in such arrays the symmetry can be ...broken by means of the elliptical shape of the nanoholes, combined with the in-plane tilt of the ellipse axes away from the array symmetry lines. The array then differently interacts with circular polarizations of opposite handedness at normal incidence, i.e., it becomes intrinsically chiral. The measure of this difference is called circular dichroism (CD). The nanosphere lithography combined with tilted silver evaporation was employed as a low-cost fabrication technique. In this paper, we demonstrate intrinsic chirality and CD by measuring the extinction in the near-infrared range. We further employ numerical analysis to visualize the circular polarization coupling with the nanostructure. We find a good agreement between simulations and the experiment, meaning that the optimization can be used to further increase CD.
In this work, the optical properties of Er and Ag co-implanted silica slabs were investigated in order to shed light on the observed improvement of the rare-earth emission properties through a ...sensitization process activated by Ag implantation. A full ion implantation approach was adopted since it represents an effective way to create a thin doped layer, where luminescent Er ions can interact with Ag-related sensitizing species. The results evidenced that the sensitization process is effectively promoted in presence of Ag ultra-small structures, like few-atom aggregates or multimers, which can be already formed at the early stages of the metal clustering process. On the other hand, the precipitation of large, plasmonic clusters, occurring at high temperature post-Ag implantation annealing, produces a decrease of the fluorescence enhancement effect. Furthermore, it is suggested that the overall sensitization mechanism originates from an Ag-Er energy transfer that determines the possibility of a broadband photostimulation of the rare-earth ions, even by pumping in non-resonant excitation condition. Thanks to these features, the investigated Er and Ag co-implanted system can be considered for the realization of high-performing optical amplifiers in waveguide.

Chirality, an intrinsic property of certain entities in the universe, is characterized by the absence of mirror symmetry. Understanding chirality is crucial as it influences molecular interactions ...and properties. Circular dichroism (CD), measured using circularly polarized light, is a standard technique for probing chirality, but its sensitivity is often limited. Here, we explore extrinsic chirality (i.e. a property arising from asymmetric achiral materials when observed from out of normal incidence directions), using photo-acoustic spectroscopy (PAS). PAS allows direct measurement of local absorption, by monitoring the heat produced and transferred to the surrounding air, regardless the transmitted, reflected, and scattered light that flows away from the sample. In conventional techniques, the CD is usually measured by taking into account only the extinction as transmitted (or reflected) light. In this study, we introduce a new PAS setup that employs an oblique-incidence laser to study extrinsic chirality in silver-coated self-assembled metasurfaces. Our experimental results reveal intriguing CD trends dependent on the angle of incidence and wavelength, indicative of extrinsic chirality. This study expands the application of PAS, enabling simultaneous analysis of multiple wavelengths and providing valuable insights into chiral metasurfaces.
Plasmonic nanostructured materials made of nanohole arrays in metal are significant plasmonic devices exhibiting resonances and strong electromagnetic confinement in the visible and near-infrared ...range. As such, they have been proposed for use in many applications such as biosensing and communications. In this work, we introduce the asymmetry in nanoholes, and investigate its influence on the electromagnetic response by means of broadband experimental characterization and numerical simulations. As a low-cost fabrication process, we use nanosphere lithography, combined with tilted silver evaporation, to obtain a 2D hexagonal array of asymmetric nanoholes in Ag. Our experimental set-up is based on a laser, widely tunable in the near-infrared range, with precise polarization control in the input and in the output. We next resolve the circular polarization degree of the transmitted light when the nanohole array is excited with linear polarization. We attribute the disbalance of left and right transmitted light to the asymmetry of the nanohole, which we support by numerical simulations. We believe that the optimization of such simple plasmonic geometry could lead to multifunctional flat-optic devices.
The active modulation of optical response of quantum emitters at the nanoscale is of paramount importance to realize tunable light sources for nanophotonic devices. Herein, a thin film of ...phase‐change material (VO2) is coupled to a 20 nm‐thick silica layer embedding Er3+ ions, and it is demonstrated how the active tuning of the local density of optical states near the erbium emitters provided by the thermally induced semiconductor‐to‐metal transition of VO2 can be used to dynamically control the Er3+ emission lifetime at telecom wavelength (1.54 μm). A decay rate contrast of a factor 2 is obtained between high temperature (90 °C), when VO2 is metallic, and room temperature, when VO2 is semiconductor, in agreement with calculations performed with the classical dipole oscillator analytical model. A hysteretic behavior is observed by measuring the Er3+ lifetime as a function of the temperature, whose parameters are consistent with those of grazing incidence X‐ray diffraction and optical transmittance measurements. The fractions of Er3+ ions that couple with VO2 in each phase at the different temperatures are determined by the analysis of the temporal decays. The results make the investigated system an optimal candidate for the development of tunable photon sources at telecom wavelength.
The active modulation of the Er3+ emission lifetime at telecom wavelength is obtained by exploiting the dielectric function change upon semiconductor‐to‐metal phase transition of a VO2 overlayer. A perfect correlation between the hysteretic temperature evolution of the Er3+ lifetime and the VO2 phase transition, characterized by grazing‐incidence X‐ray diffraction and optical transmission, is demonstrated.
We report the achievement of sensitive gas detection using periodic silver nanoprisms fabricated by a simple and low-cost lithographic technique. The presence of sharp tips combined with the periodic ...arrangement of the nanoprisms allowed the excitement of isolated and interacting localized surface plasmon resonances. Specific sensing capabilities with respect to aromatic hydrocarbons were achieved when the metal nanoprism arrays were coupled in the near field with functional hybrid films, providing a real-time, label-free, and reversible methodology. Ultra-high-vacuum temperature-programmed desorption measurements demonstrated an interaction energy between the sensitive film and analytes in the range of 55–71 kJ/mol. The far-field optical properties and the detection sensitivity of the sensors, modeled using a finite element method, were correlated to experimental data from gas sensing tests. An absorbance variation of 1.2% could be observed and associated with a theoretical increase in the functional film refractive index of ∼0.001, as a consequence to the interaction with 30 ppm xylene. The possibility of detecting such a small variation in the refractive index suggests the highly promising sensing capabilities of the presented technique.
