The Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) is a space-based observatory conceived to study high-energy gamma rays, but also capable to detect cosmic-ray electrons and positrons. It is operating in low ...Earth orbit since June 2008 and thanks to its large acceptance, has collected the largest high-energy cosmic-ray electron sample to date, with more than 10k events above 1 TeV. The new Pass 8 event-level analysis, recently released by the Fermi-LAT Collaboration, provides several improvements, from the instrument simulation to the reconstruction algorithms, and opens new opportunity for cosmic-ray studies. In this talk we describe the instrument capabilities as a cosmic-ray detector and review its previous results. Recent new measurements and future prospects will also be discussed.
The Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) has been exploring the high-energy γ-ray sky since its launch on June 11, 2008. After 5 years of essentially flawless operations, the LAT collected more than 800 ...million γ rays from 20MeV to more than 300GeV. With its uniform coverage of the sky, the LAT allowed the first high statistics observations of γ-ray sources of known classes as well as the discovery of new emitters. The LAT also allowed a detailed study of the diffuse γ-ray emission, which constitutes roughly 90% of the LAT photons, and constrains cosmic-ray production and propagation in our own Galaxy. In this talk I will review the status and the performance of the LAT and describe some of the most important scientific results.
Abstract
We report the detection of X-ray polarization in the neutron-star low-mass X-ray binary Scorpius (Sco) X-1 with PolarLight. The result is energy-dependent, with a nondetection in 3–4 keV but ...a 4
σ
detection in 4–8 keV; it is also flux-dependent in the 4–8 keV band, with a nondetection when the source displays low fluxes but a 5
σ
detection during high fluxes, in which case we obtain a polarization fraction of 0.043 ± 0.008 and a polarization angle of 52.°6 ± 5.°4. This confirms a previous marginal detection with OSO-8 in the 1970s and marks Sco X-1 as the second astrophysical source with a significant polarization measurement in the keV band. The measured polarization angle is in line with the jet orientation of the source on the sky plane (54°), which is supposedly the symmetry axis of the system. Combining previous spectral analysis, our measurements suggest that an optically thin corona is located in the transition layer under the highest accretion rates, and disfavor the extended accretion disk corona model.
Context.
After about 16 years since its first outburst, the transient neutron star low-mass X-ray binary XTE J1701−462 turned on again in September 2022, allowing for the first study of its X-ray ...polarimetric characteristics by a dedicated observing program with the Imaging X-ray Polarimeter Explorer (IXPE).
Aims.
Polarimetric studies of XTE J1701−462 have been expected to improve our understanding of accreting weakly magnetized neutron stars, in particular, the physics and the geometry of the hot inner regions close to the compact object.
Methods.
The IXPE data of two triggered observations were analyzed using time-resolved spectroscopic and polarimetric techniques, following the source along its
Z
-track of the color–color diagram.
Results.
During the first pointing on 2022 September 29, an average 2–8 keV polarization degree of (4.6 ± 0.4)% was measured, the highest value found up to now for this class of sources. Conversely, only a ∼0.6% average degree was obtained during the second pointing ten days later.
Conclusions.
The polarimetric signal appears to be strictly related to the higher energy blackbody component associated with the boundary layer (BL) emission and its reflection from the inner accretion disk, and it is as strong as 6.1% and 1.2% (> 95% significant) above 3–4 keV for the two measurements, respectively. The variable polarimetric signal is apparently related to the spectral characteristics of XTE J1701−462, which is the strongest when the source was in the horizontal branch of its
Z
-track and the weakest in the normal branch. These IXPE results provide new important observational constraints on the physical models and geometry of the
Z
-sources. Here, we discuss the possible reasons for the presence of strong and variable polarization among these sources.
The phase- and energy-resolved polarization measurements of accreting X-ray pulsars (XRPs) allow us to test different theoretical models of their emission, and they also provide an avenue to ...determine the emission region geometry. We present the results of the observations of the XRP GX 301−2 performed with the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE). A persistent XRP, GX 301−2 has one of the longest spin periods known: ∼680 s. A massive hyper-giant companion star Wray 977 supplies mass to the neutron star via powerful stellar winds. We did not detect significant polarization in the phase-averaged data when using spectro-polarimetric analysis, with the upper limit on the polarization degree (PD) of 2.3% (99% confidence level). Using the phase-resolved spectro-polarimetric analysis, we obtained a significant detection of polarization (above 99% confidence level) in two out of nine phase bins and a marginal detection in three bins, with a PD ranging between ∼3% and ∼10% and a polarization angle varying in a very wide range from ∼0° to ∼160°. Using the rotating vector model, we obtained constraints on the pulsar geometry using both phase-binned and unbinned analyses, finding excellent agreement. Finally, we discuss possible reasons for a low observed polarization in GX 301−2.
Abstract
We report follow-up observations of the Crab Nebula with the PolarLight X-ray polarimeter, which revealed a possible variation in polarization associated with a pulsar glitch in 2019. The ...new observations confirm that the polarization has recovered roughly 100 days after the glitch. With the new observations, we find that the polarization angle (PA) measured with PolarLight from the total nebular emission has a difference of 18.°0 ± 4.°6 from that measured 42 yr ago with OSO-8, indicating a secular evolution of polarization with either the Crab Nebula or pulsar. The long-term variation in PA could be a result of multiple glitches in the history, magnetic reconnection, or movement of synchrotron emitting structures in the nebula, or secular evolution of the pulsar magnetic geometry.
ixpeobssim is a simulation and analysis framework specifically developed for the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE). Given a source model and the response functions of the telescopes, it is ...designed to produce realistic simulated observations, in the form of event lists in FITS format, containing a strict superset of the information included in the publicly released IXPE data products. The core simulation capabilities are complemented by a full suite of post-processing applications which support the spatial, spectral, and temporal models needed for analysis of typical polarized X-ray sources, allowing for the implementation of complex, polarization-aware analysis pipelines, and facilitating the interoperation with the standard visualization and analysis tools traditionally in use by the X-ray community. Although much of the framework is specific to IXPE, the modular nature of the underlying implementation makes it potentially straightforward to adapt it to different missions with polarization capabilities.
Abstract
Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) is a Small Explorer mission by NASA and Agenzia Spaziale Italiana, launched on 2021 December 9, dedicated to investigating X-ray polarimetry ...allowing angular-, time-, and energy-resolved observations in the 2–8 keV energy band. IXPE is in the science observation phase since 2022 January; it is comprised of three identical telescopes with grazing-incidence mirrors, each one having in the focal plane a gas pixel detector. In this paper, we present a possible guideline to obtain an optimal background selection in polarimetric analysis, and a rejection strategy to remove instrumental background. This work is based on the analysis of IXPE observations, aiming to improve as much as possible the polarimetric sensitivity. In particular, the developed strategies have been applied
as a case study
to the IXPE observation of the 4U 0142+61 magnetar.
