In the realm of image processing, enhancing the quality of the images is known as a super-resolution problem (SR). Among SR methods, a super-resolution generative adversarial network, or SRGAN, has ...been introduced to generate SR images from low-resolution images. As it is of the utmost importance to keep the size and the shape of the images, while enlarging the medical images, we propose a novel super-resolution model with a generative adversarial network to generate SR images with finer details and higher quality to encourage less blurring. By widening residual blocks and using a self-attention layer, our model becomes robust and generalizable as it is able to extract the most important part of the images before up-sampling. We named our proposed model as wide-attention SRGAN (WA-SRGAN). Moreover, we have applied improved Wasserstein with a Gradient penalty to stabilize the model while training. To train our model, we have applied images from Camylon 16 database and enlarged them by <inline-formula> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">2\times </tex-math></inline-formula>, <inline-formula> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">4\times </tex-math></inline-formula>, <inline-formula> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">8\times </tex-math></inline-formula>, and <inline-formula> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">16\times </tex-math></inline-formula> upscale factors with the ground truth of the size of <inline-formula> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">256\times 256\times 3 </tex-math></inline-formula>. Furthermore, two normalization methods, including batch normalization, and weight normalization have been applied and we observed that weight normalization is an enabling factor to improve metric performance in terms of SSIM. Moreover, several evaluation metrics, such as PSNR, MSE, SSIM, MS-SSIM, and QILV have been applied for having a comprehensive objective comparison with other methods, including SRGAN, A-SRGAN, and bicubial. Also, we performed the job of classification by using a deep learning model called ResNeXt-101 (<inline-formula> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">32\times 8\text{d} </tex-math></inline-formula>) for super-resolution, high-resolution, and low-resolution images and compared the outcomes in terms of accuracy score. Finally, the results on breast cancer histopathology images show the superiority of our model by using weight normalization and a batch size of one in terms of restoration of the color and the texture details.
Abstract
In this study, we aimed to identify the factors that were associated with mortality among continuing care residents in Alberta, during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. We ...achieved this by leveraging and linking various administrative datasets together. Then, we examined pre-processing methods in terms of prediction performance. Finally, we developed several machine learning models and compared the results of these models in terms of performance. We conducted a retrospective cohort study of all continuing care residents in Alberta, Canada, from March 1, 2020, to March 31, 2021. We used a univariable and a multivariable logistic regression (LR) model to identify predictive factors of 60-day all-cause mortality by estimating odds ratios (ORs) with a 95% confidence interval. To determine the best sensitivity–specificity cut-off point, the Youden index was employed. We developed several machine learning models to determine the best model regarding performance. In this cohort study, increased age, male sex, symptoms, previous admissions, and some specific comorbidities were associated with increased mortality. Machine learning and pre-processing approaches offer a potentially valuable method for improving risk prediction for mortality, but more work is needed to show improvement beyond standard risk factors.
Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) models are a type of deep learning architecture introduced to achieve the correct classification of breast cancer. This paper has a two-fold purpose. The first aim ...is to investigate the various deep learning models in classifying breast cancer histopathology images. This study identified the most accurate models in terms of the binary, four, and eight classifications of breast cancer histopathology image databases. The different accuracy scores obtained for the deep learning models on the same database showed that other factors such as pre-processing, data augmentation, and transfer learning methods can impact the ability of the models to achieve higher accuracy. The second purpose of our manuscript is to investigate the latest models that have no or limited examination done in previous studies. The models like ResNeXt, Dual Path Net, SENet, and NASNet had been identified with the most cutting-edge results for the ImageNet database. These models were examined for the binary, and eight classifications on BreakHis, a breast cancer histopathology image database. Furthermore, the BACH database was used to investigate these models for four classifications. Then, these models were compared with the previous studies to find and propose the most state-of-the-art models for each classification. Since the Inception-ResNet-V2 architecture achieved the best results for binary and eight classifications, we have examined this model in our study as well to provide a better comparison result. In short, this paper provides an extensive evaluation and discussion about the experimental settings for each study that had been conducted on the breast cancer histopathology images.
The research aim is to determine the effect of word-stemming in web pages classification using different machine learning classifiers, namely Naïve Bayes (NB), k-Nearest Neighbour (k-NN), Support ...Vector Machine (SVM) and Multilayer Perceptron (MP). Each classifiers' performance is evaluated in term of accuracy and processing time. This research uses BBC dataset that has five predefined categories. The result demonstrates that classifiers' performance is better without word stemming, whereby all classifiers show higher classification accuracy, with the highest accuracy produced by NB and SVM at 97% for F1 score, while NB takes shorter training time than SVM. With word stemming, the effect on training and classification time is negligible, except on Multilayer Perceptron in which word stemming has effectively reduced the training time.
Background: Mental illness can lead to adverse outcomes such as homelessness and police interaction and understanding of the events leading up to these adverse outcomes is important. Predictive ...models may help identify individuals at risk of such adverse outcomes. Using a fixed observation window cohort with logistic regression (LR) or machine learning (ML) models can result in lower performance when compared with adaptive and parcellated windows. Method: An administrative healthcare dataset was used, comprising of 240,219 individuals in Calgary, Alberta, Canada who were diagnosed with addiction or mental health (AMH) between April 1, 2013, and March 31, 2018. The cohort was followed for 2 years to identify factors associated with homelessness and police interactions. To understand the benefit of flexible windows to predictive models, an alternative cohort was created. Then LR and ML models, including random forests (RF), and extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) were compared in the two cohorts. Results: Among 237,602 individuals, 0.8% (1,800) experienced first homelessness, while 0.32% (759) reported initial police interaction among 237,141 individuals. Male sex (AORs: H=1.51, P=2.52), substance disorder (AORs: H=3.70, P=2.83), psychiatrist visits (AORs: H=1.44, P=1.49), and drug abuse (AORs: H=2.67, P=1.83) were associated with initial homelessness (H) and police interaction (P). XGBoost showed superior performance using the flexible method (sensitivity =91%, AUC =90% for initial homelessness, and sensitivity =90%, AUC=89% for initial police interaction) Conclusion: This study identified key features associated with initial homelessness and police interaction and demonstrated that flexible windows can improve predictive modeling.
