Small intestinal lactase, sucrase and alkaline phosphatase activities were measured in histologically normal peroral intestinal biopsies from 477 individuals. Enzyme activities varied with age, sex, ...site of biopsy, and were lowest in post-weaning children and highest in young adults. Lactase activity does not decrease with advancing age.
A descriptive, longitudinal study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of a 2-day workshop designed to reduce the anxiety levels of new graduates participating in the NCLEX-RN examination. A ...hospital nurse administrator, in collaboration with nurse educators, provided a multimodal in-service program. "Test wiseness," or test-taking strategies, and exercises related to physical and emotional well-being, were included for three groups of new graduates. Using Zung's Self-rating Anxiety Scale to collect data, reduction in anxiety after the workshop and at the completion of the NCLEX-RN experience was identified. All participants in the program passed the NCLEX-RN examination.
The full amino acid sequence of the beta-subunit of Chroomonas CS24 phycoerythrin has been determined by conventional Edman degradation and mass spectrometry. The sequence compromises 177 amino acids ...with a molecular mass of 18669 Da. It is 91.5% identical to the deduced amino acid sequence of Cryptomonas phi beta-phycoerythrin (Reith, M. and Douglas, S. (1990) Plant Mol. Biology 15, 585-592). The chromophores are bound by single thioether linkages. No evidence of microheterogeneity was found confirming that both beta-subunits of the holoprotein are identical.
In 14 of 204 consecutive cadaveric renal allograft recipients, the primary diagnosis was essential hypertension. Four patients had manifest ischemic heart disease before transplantation. Three of ...these patients died within 31 months of transplantation from recurrent myocardial infarction, and the fourth experienced coronary insufficiency. Cadaveric renal transplantation does not prevent the progression of coronary artery disease in patients whose renal failure was due to essential hypertension. In the presence of angina or previous myocardial infarction, these patiemts may be better treated by maintenance hemodialysis.

DoradoLisp is an implementation of the Interlisp programming system on a large personal computer. It has evolved from AltoLisp, an implementation on a less powerful machine. The major goal of the ...Dorado implementation was to eliminate the performance deficiencies of the previous system. This paper describes the current status of the system and discusses some of the issues that arose during its implementation. Among the techniques that helped us meet our performance goal were transferring much of the kernel software into Lisp, intensive use of performance measurement tools to determine the areas of worst performance, and use of the Interlisp programming environment to allow rapid and widespread improvements to the system code. The paper lists some areas in which performance was critical and offers some observations on how our experience might be useful to other implementations of Interlisp.
