This paper presents an LED backlight driving system for large-scale liquid crystal display panels. High efficiency, high power factor, circuit simplicity, and low cost can be achieved by using a ...single-stage charge-pump asymmetrical half-bridge converter. To regulate the LED current and brightness for the LED backlight system, some current sharing methods are presented and compared. The requirements for the current sharing and luminance balance among paralleled LED arrays can be satisfied while current ripple is eliminated significantly. Because of the addition of bypass diodes, an alternative current path can be offered when a single LED fails. The LED array will not be extinguished. Reliability of the LED backlight system can thus be improved effectively. A laboratory prototype has been built and tested. The simulation and experimental results are shown to verify the feasibility of the proposed method.
Creation of sizable subintima during intervention for chronic total occlusions (CTO) could lead to the key selection preference of metallic stents rather than bioresorbable vascular scaffolds (BVS) ...and then possibly deviate the outcome comparisons in real-world studies. By including recanalized CTO with true lumen tracking, we tested if any selection preference remained and compared the outcomes between everolimus-eluting stent (EES) and BVS implantation.Among 211 consecutive CTO interventions with true lumen tracking from August 2014 to April 2018 when BVS was available, we compared the clinical and interventional features between 28 patients with BVS and 77 patients with EES implantation. With propensity score matching and a median follow-up of 50.5 (37.3-60.3) months, we further assessed 25 patients with BVS and 25 with EES for target vessel failure (TVF: cardiac death, target vessel myocardial infarction, and target lesion revascularization).Multivariate analyses showed that BVS was still favored in the presence of LAD CTO (odds ratio (OR) = 3.4, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.0-11.7) and an average scaffold/stent size ≥ 3 mm (OR = 10.5, 95% CI = 3.0-37.3). EES was preferred for lesions with a J-CTO score ≥ 3 (OR = 19.3, 95% CI = 3.4-110.8) and multivessel intervention necessary at index procedure (OR = 11.3, 95% CI = 1.9-67.3). With matched comparisons, the TVF-free survival of EES was better than that of BVS for CTO recanalization (P = 0.049 by log-rank test) at long-term follow-up.Even with true lumen tracking techniques, selection bias remained substantial when determining either device for CTO implantation. The matched comparison of outcomes suggested the unfavorable longer-term impacts of the first generation of BVS on CTO lesions.
Pneumonia, the leading reason underlying childhood deaths, may be triggered or exacerbated by air pollution. To date, only a few studies have examined the association of air pollution with emergency ...department (ED) visits for pediatric pneumonia, with inconsistent results. Therefore, we aimed to elucidate the impact of short-term exposure to particulate matter (PM) and other air pollutants on the incidence of ED visits for pediatric pneumonia.

, and other air pollutant levels were measured at 11 air quality-monitoring stations in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan, between 2008 and 2014. Further, we extracted the medical records of non-trauma patients aged ≤17 years and who had visited an ED with the principal diagnosis of pneumonia. A time-stratified case-crossover study design was employed to determine the hazard effect of air pollution in a total of 4024 patients.

The fire ant Solenopsis invicta is a significant pest that was inadvertently introduced into the southern United States almost a century ago and more recently into California and other regions of the ...world. An assessment of genetic variation at a diverse set of molecular markers in 2144 fire ant colonies from 75 geographic sites worldwide revealed that at least nine separate introductions of S. invicta have occurred into newly invaded areas and that the main southern U.S. population is probably the source of all but one of these introductions. The sole exception involves a putative serial invasion from the southern United States to California to Taiwan. These results illustrate in stark fashion a severe negative consequence of an increasingly massive and interconnected global trade and travel system.
With-no-lysine (WNK) kinases regulate renal sodium-chloride cotransporter (NCC) to maintain body sodium and potassium homeostasis. Gain-of-function mutations of WNK1 and WNK4 in humans lead to a ...Mendelian hypertensive and hyperkalemic disease pseudohypoaldosteronism type II (PHAII). X-ray crystal structure and in vitro studies reveal chloride ion (Cl⁻) binds to a hydrophobic pocket within the kinase domain of WNKs to inhibit its activity. The mechanism is thought to be important for physiological regulation of NCC by extracellular potassium. To test the hypothesis that WNK4 senses the intracellular concentration of Cl⁻ physiologically, we generated knockin mice carrying Cl⁻-insensitive mutant WNK4. These mice displayed hypertension, hyperkalemia, hyperactive NCC, and other features fully recapitulating human and mouse models of PHAII caused by gain-of-function WNK4. Lowering plasma potassium levels by dietary potassium restriction increased NCC activity in wild-type, but not in knockin, mice. NCC activity in knockin mice can be further enhanced by the administration of norepinephrine, a known activator of NCC. Raising plasma potassium by oral gavage of potassium inactivated NCC within 1 hour in wild-type mice, but had no effect in knockin mice. The results provide compelling support for the notion that WNK4 is a bona fide physiological intracellular Cl⁻ sensor and that Cl⁻ regulation of WNK4 underlies the mechanism of regulation of NCC by extracellular potassium.
This paper presents a dimmable light-emitting diode (LED) driver with adaptive feedback control for low-power lighting applications. An improved pulsewidth modulation dimming technique is studied for ...regulating the LED current and brightness. Under universal input voltage operation, high efficiency and high power factor can be achieved by a coupled inductor single-ended primary inductance converter power factor correction (PFC) converter with a simple commercial transition-mode PFC controller. The operation principles and design considerations of the studied LED driver are analyzed and discussed. A laboratory prototype is also designed and tested to verify the feasibility.
Organisms often acquire physiological and morphological modifications to conquer ecological challenges when colonizing new environments which lead to their adaptive evolution. However, deciphering ...the genomic mechanism of ecological adaptation is difficult because ecological environments are often too complex for straightforward interpretation. Thus, we examined the adaptation of a widespread songbird—the rufous‐capped babbler (Cyanoderma ruficeps)—to a relatively simple system: distinct environments across elevational gradients on the mountainous island of Taiwan. We focused on the genomic sequences of 43 birds from five populations to show that the Taiwan group split from its sister group in mainland China around 1–2 million years ago (Ma) and colonized the montane habitats of Taiwan at least twice around 0.03–0.22 Ma. The montane and lowland Taiwan populations diverged with gene flow between them, suggesting strong selection associated with different elevations. We found that the montane babblers had smaller beaks than the lowland ones, consistent with Allen's rule, and identified candidate genes—COL9A1 and SOX11—underlying the beak size changes. We also found that altitudinally divergent mutations were mostly located in noncoding regions and tended to accumulate in chromosomal inversions and autosomes. The altitudinally divergent mutations might regulate genes related to haematopoietic, metabolic, immune, auditory and vision functions, as well as cerebrum morphology and plumage development. The results reveal the genomic bases of morphological and physiological adaptation in this species to the low temperature, hypoxia and high UV light environment at high elevation. These findings improve our understanding of how ecological adaptation drives population divergence from the perspective of genomic architecture.
Chronic pain disorders are often associated with negative emotions, including anxiety and depression. The central nucleus of the amygdala (CeA) has emerged as an integrative hub for nociceptive and ...affective components during central pain development. Prior adverse injuries are precipitating factors thought to transform nociceptors into a primed state for chronic pain. However, the cellular basis underlying the primed state and the subsequent development of chronic pain remains unknown. Here, we investigated the cellular and synaptic alterations of the CeA in a mouse model of chronic muscle pain. In these mice, local infusion of pregabalin, a clinically approved drug for fibromyalgia and other chronic pain disorders, into the CeA or chemogenetic inactivation of the somatostatin-expressing CeA (CeA-SST) neurons during the priming phase prevented the chronification of pain. Further, electrophysiological recording revealed that the CeA-SST neurons had increased excitatory synaptic drive and enhanced neuronal excitability in the chronic pain states. Finally, either chemogenetic inactivation of the CeA-SST neurons or pharmacological suppression of the nociceptive afferents from the brainstem to the CeA-SST neurons alleviated chronic pain and anxio-depressive symptoms. These data raise the possibility of targeting treatments to CeA-SST neurons to prevent central pain sensitization.

Ants have evolved very complex societies and are key ecosystem members. Some ants, such as the fire ant Solenopsis invicta, are also major pests. Here, we present a draft genome of S. invicta, ...assembled from Roche 454 and Illumina sequencing reads obtained from a focal haploid male and his brothers. We used comparative genomic methods to obtain insight into the unique features of the 5. invicta genome. For example, we found that this genome harbors four adjacent copies of vitellogenin. A phylogenetic analysis revealed that an ancestral vitellogenin gene first underwent a duplication that was followed by possibly independent duplications of each of the daughter vitellogenins. The vitellogenin genes have undergone subfunctionalization with queen-and worker-specific expression, possibly reflecting differential selection acting on the queen and worker castes. Additionally, we identified more than 400 putative olfactory receptors of which at least 297 are intact. This represents the largest repertoire reported so far in insects. S. invicta also harbors an expansion of a specific family of lipid-processing genes, two putative orthologs to the transformer/feminizer sex differentiation gene, a functional DNA methylation system, and a single putative telomerase ortholog. EST data indicate that this 5. invicta telomerase ortholog has at least four spliceforms that differ in their use of two sets of mutually exclusive exons. Some of these and other unique aspects of the fire ant genome are likely linked to the complex social behavior of this species.
Recent cases of avian influenza H5N1 and the swine-origin 2009 H1N1 have caused a great concern that a global disaster like the 1918 influenza pandemic may occur again. Viral transmission begins with ...a critical interaction between hemagglutinin (HA) glycoprotein, which is on the viral coat of influenza, and sialic acid (SA) containing glycans, which are on the host cell surface. To elucidate the role of HA glycosylation in this important interaction, various defined HA glycoforms were prepared, and their binding affinity and specificity were studied by using a synthetic SA microarray. Truncation of the N-glycan structures on HA increased SA binding affinities while decreasing specificity toward disparate SA ligands. The contribution of each monosaccharide and sulfate group within SA ligand structures to HA binding energy was quantitatively dissected. It was found that the sulfate group adds nearly 100-fold (2.04 kcal/mol) in binding energy to fully glycosylated HA, and so does the biantennary glycan to the monoglycosylated HA glycoform. Antibodies raised against HA protein bearing only a single N-linked GlcNAc at each glycosylation site showed better binding affinity and neutralization activity against influenza subtypes than the fully glycosylated HAs elicited. Thus, removal of structurally nonessential glycans on viral surface glycoproteins may be a very effective and general approach for vaccine design against influenza and other human viruses.
