This study discusses to what extent the inclusion, or not, of the race/color variable in epidemiological analysis of the COVID-19 pandemic can work as an external manifestation of necropolitics and ...as a producer of health inequities. We conducted a literature review on 09 articles, and on Scientific Electronic Library, PubMed and Virtual Health Library databases. We also conducted a documental analysis on 27 epidemiological reports from all the federal states and the Federal District of Brazil. We did not see much information regarding race/color, which can be interpreted as an intentional omission in order to hide those who the epidemics affects the most. The denial of basic and fundamental rights is the element that characterizes the larger racist structure of Brazil's COVID-19 policies.
We adopted the reverse‐transcriptase‐loop‐mediated isothermal amplification (RT‐LAMP) to detect severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‐Cov‐2) in patient samples. Two primer sets for ...genes N and Orf1ab were designed to detect SARS‐CoV‐2, and one primer set was designed to detect the human gene Actin. We collected prospective 138 nasopharyngeal swabs, 70 oropharyngeal swabs, 69 salivae, and 68 mouth saline wash samples from patients suspected to have severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) caused by SARS‐CoV‐2 to test the RT‐LAMP in comparison with the gold standard technique reverse‐transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT‐qPCR). The accuracy of diagnosis using both primers, N5 and Orf9, was evaluated. Sensitivity and specificity for diagnosis were 96% (95% confidence interval CI: 87–99) and 85% (95% CI: 76–91) in 138 samples, respectively. Accurate diagnosis results were obtained only in nasopharyngeal swabs processed via extraction kit. Accurate and rapid diagnosis could aid coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) pandemic management by identifying, isolating, and treating patients rapidly.
Selenium (Se) is essential for human health because it is linked to important biological functions and antioxidant activity. Consumption of Se-biofortified rice can reduce the incidence of severe ...diseases. Although not essential, Se has been proven beneficial to vascular plants. Thus, the present study explored the effects of foliar application of Se on the biofortification, agronomic characteristics and physiological activity of 13 irrigated rice cultivars. The experiment followed a randomized block design in a strip scheme, with a 13 × 2 arrangement and four replicates. The factors included 13 commercially irrigated rice cultivars and two Se application levels (0 and 60 g ha −1). Foliar application of Se did not affect the growth and yield of the tested irrigated rice cultivars. In fact, the presence of Se during plant cultivation increased the transpiration rate and chlorophyll content. Moreover, Se accumulation in rice grains significantly varied among the tested cultivars. Overall, foliar application of Se can satisfy the minimum daily intake of this element through the consumption of grains of 11 of the 13 rice cultivars tested.
•Selenium concentration and physiological properties of rice were studied.•Foliar spraying is effective for agronomic biofortification of rice with selenium.•Selenium accumulation capacity differs across rice cultivars.•Foliar selenium application does not affect rice productivity.•Application of 60 g ha−1 selenium satisfied its minimum daily intake.
Hexane is the most widely solvent used in the lipids extraction process, as the case of the sugarcane wax. However, the use of this solvent is highly harmful to the environment and to human health. ...Limonene is a monoterpene found in the citrus peel, with great potential for use as a green solvent. In this study, the partial and total substitution of hexane by limonene was performed in the process of the sugarcane peel wax extraction to evaluate the effect of this substitution on the physicochemical characteristics of the wax. The extracted samples were compared with a commercial wax sample (carnauba) using the Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Infrared by Fourier Transform (FTIR) analyses. Through this study, we can conclude that the waxes obtained from the use of the hexane and limonene mixture solvents presented similar physicochemical characteristics to those found in commercial waxes. Thus, the total and/or partial substitution of the hexane by solvents less harmful to health and the environment, such as limonene, can be an alternative in the wax extraction process.
