To analyze the moderating effect of maturation on the association between social support, received from parents and friends, on physical activity level in adolescents. Cross-sectional study conducted ...in 2014 with a representative sample of 855 adolescents (54% girls) enrolled in public school of São José dos Pinhais, Brazil. Adolescents reported weekly attendance who received different types of social support for physical activity, which was classified into three categories (“never," "sometimes," "always"). The social support score from each source was computed and classified in tertiles ("low", "intermediate", "high"). The moderate to vigorous leisure time physical activity was evaluated with a valid questionnaire and the score was classified as ≥300 min/wk. The maturation was self-assessed by pubic hairiness by photos and classified as "pubescent" and "post-pubescent". The associations were tested with Poisson regression in STATA 14. The fact that parents "sometimes" (PR: 2.51; 95% CI: 1.42-4.44) or "always" (PR: 4.60; 95% CI: 2.10-10.10) to attend the activities was positively associated with the physical activity of pubertal adolescents. While positive reinforcement for the activities ("always" commenting) was positively associated with the outcome in post-pubertal adolescents (PR: 2.60; 95% CI: 1.01-6.71). The fact that friends "always" watch activities (PR: 2.39; 95% CI: 1.01-5.76), the score "intermediate" (PR: 2.13; 95% CI: 1.28-3.58) and "high" (RP: 1.91; 95% CI: 1.11-3.28) were positively associated with the physical activity of pubertal adolescents. Maturation shows a moderating effect in the association between the social support and physical activity.
Abstract Infants who die during the perinatal period could present the following upon examination of the ribs: alterations of the osteochondral junction (OCJ) that could be related to intrauterine ...growth restriction, placental alterations, maternal disorders, and congenital abnormalities. The aim of this study was to identify the morphological alterations of the OCJ in the autopsied infants and the factors associated with its pathogenesis. The OCJ from 254 infants were sequentially autopsied and analyzed. Hematoxylin-eosin and blue Masson's trichrome stains were used for examination. The expression in the chondrocytes of the cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP) was measured using a polyclonal antibody. There were 199 (78.3%) cases with normal OCJ and 55 (22%) cases with alterations; among these, 38 (14.9%) cases have an increased cartilage matrix at the free bone marrow zone of the OCJ (ICM), 10 (3.9%) cases have a bizarre pattern (BZ), 5 (2%) cases have a bone tissue formation closing de growth channels (MCO) of the OCJ, and 2 (0.8%) cases have bone marrow cells encroaching the free bone marrow zone. The length of the proliferative zone was different in the groups with alterations of the OCJ ( P < .001), being higher in the group of patients with MCO and ICM ( P < .05). In the group with BZ, the length was smaller ( P < .05). The analysis of the OCJ is important in the autopsies performed at the perinatal period, and this study contributes for a better understanding of the mechanisms related to the etiology of these alterations.
The objective was to evaluate the effect of phosphorus sources as a partial corrective fertilization and maintenance in upland rice cultivation. The experiment was conducted in the municipality of ...Alta Floresta/MT in crop year 2007/08, using the experimental design of randomized blocks with five treatments (control, simple superphosphate, triple superphosphate, Arad reactive rock phosphate and bone meal), and four replications. The following characteristics were evaluated: plant height, stem diameter, tiller number per meter, panicle number per m2, Internode length, number of grains per panicle, percentage of filled grains, voids, weight of 100 grains, return on beans, whole grain yield and productivity. Applying phosphorus influenced most of the morphological characteristics of the rice, except the stem diameter and length of the internode. There was influence of phosphate sources for the number of grains per panicle and productivity and that the two variables for the treatments with superphosphate and triple superphosphate were higher than the control. The use of triple superphosphate provided greater productivity and higher economic return in the first year of cultivation.
The herbicide sulfentrazone (SFZ) is widely used in soybean and sugarcane crops, although it is classified as very dangerous to the environment. To minimize barriers to the development of research ...with this herbicide due to the high cost of acquisition of its analytical standard and the availability of few distributors to acquire the standard in the country, a procedure of extraction and purification of SFZ was developed from a commercial herbicide formulation available in Brazil. Using the most suitable experimental conditions established for the extraction procedure, the SFZ content in the resulting solid after extraction and drying was 97.5% (m/m), which value was determined by acid-base potentiometric titrations. To characterize the solid obtained in this procedure, the material was studied by thermal analysis (thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry) and Fourier transform infrared photoacoustic spectroscopy (FTIR-PAS) to confirm the presence of functional groups present in the SFZ molecule. Thermal analysis of the solid resulting from the extraction indicated processes of melting, thermal degradation and volatilization of the SFZ during its heating. By potentiometric titrations of the purified solid dissolved in water/acetonitrile (ACN) binary mixtures, it was possible to determine the ionization constant (pKa) of SFZ in water at 25.0ºC. By this study, extrapolated value of pKa in water is 6.45 obtained from the linear correlation of pKa versus molar ACN fraction plot. The value obtained at 25.0 °C by potentiometry in this study is quite close to the literature value of 6.56 determined at 20 °C by the spectrophotometric technique. However, the pKa value determined by potentiometric titrations of dilute solutions of the SFZ commercial formulations was much higher than that of 6.56, indicating that the degree of ionization of SFZ under herbicide application conditions can be quite distinct in the presence of possible adjuvants present in the commercial formulation of the herbicide.
The in vitro action of the nematophagous fungi Duddingtonia flagrans, Monacrosporium thaumasium and Verticillium chlamydosporium on eggs of Ascaris lumbricoides was observed. After 7, 10 and 14 days of interaction, the fungus showing most promise for use in biologically control over Ascaris lumbricoides was Verticillium chlamydosporium (26-30%). The other fungi did not present satisfactory results.

In this paper, we investigate bit allocation strategies for a class of embedded wavelet video encoders. They take advantage of the precise control that such coders have over the bit-rate of each ...frame. We first show that a piecewise-linear model suits the rate × distortion characteristics of these encoders better than an exponential model, specially in low bit-rate applications. Then, we use an effective iterative procedure for dealing with the problem of frame dependency which yields improved rate × distortion results. Two types of embedded wavelet coders, using scalar and vector quantization, are tested. The results are encouraging, showing that the adoption of an adequate rate-control strategy can improve both objective and subjective quality of video sequences encoded using such embedded wavelet video encoders.
