The source had a peak bolometric luminosity of ... and a total integrated energy of ... erg radiated over the ~6 months of observations presented. The UV/optical emission of the source is well fitted by a blackbody with roughly constant temperature of T ... 35,000 K, while the luminosity declines by roughly a factor of 16 over this time. The optical/UV luminosity decline is broadly consistent with an exponential decline, ..., with t0 ... 60 d. ASASSN-14li also exhibits soft X-ray emission comparable in luminosity to the optical and UV emission but declining at a slower rate, and the X-ray emission now dominates. Spectra of the source show broad Balmer and helium lines in emission as well as strong blue continuum emission at all epochs. We use the discoveries of ASASSN-14li and ASASSN-14ae to estimate the TDE rate implied by ASAS-SN, finding an average rate of ... per galaxy with a 90 per cent confidence interval of ... per galaxy. Brightness variations due to dark spots on the stellar surface encode information about stellar surface rotation and magnetic activity. In this work, we analyze the Kepler long-cadence data of 26,521 ...main-sequence stars of spectral types M and K in order to measure their surface rotation and photometric activity level. Rotation-period estimates are obtained by the combination of a wavelet analysis and autocorrelation function of the light curves. Reliable rotation estimates are determined by comparing the results from the different rotation diagnostics and four data sets. We also measure the photometric activity proxy using the amplitude of the flux variations on an appropriate timescale. We report rotation periods and photometric activity proxies for about 60% of the sample, including 4431 targets for which McQuillan et al. did not report a rotation period. For the common targets with rotation estimates in this study and in McQuillan et al., our rotation periods agree within 99%. In this work, we also identify potential polluters, such as misclassified red giants and classical pulsator candidates. Within the parameter range we study, there is a mild tendency for hotter stars to have shorter rotation periods. The photometric activity proxy spans a wider range of values with increasing effective temperature. The rotation period and photometric activity proxy are also related, with being larger for fast rotators. Similar to McQuillan et al., we find a bimodal distribution of rotation periods.
Although simple γ-lactones and γ-lactams have received considerable attention from the synthetic community, particularly due to their relevance in biological and medicinal contexts, stereoselective ...synthetic approaches to more densely substituted derivatives remain scarce. The in-depth study presented herein, showcasing a straightforward method for the stereocontrolled synthesis of γ-lactones and γ-lactams, builds on and considerably expands the stereodivergent synthesis of 1,4-dicarbonyl compounds by a ynamide/vinyl sulfoxide coupling. A full mechanistic and computational study of the rearrangement was conducted, uncovering the role of all of the reaction components and providing a rationale for stereoselection. The broad applicability of the developed tools to streamlining synthesis is demonstrated by concise enantioselective total syntheses of (+)-nephrosteranic acid, (+)-rocellaric acid, and (+)-nephromopsinic acid.

It has several major features characteristic of the hydrogen-poor super-luminous supernovae (SLSNe-I), whose energy sources and progenitors are currently poorly understood. In contrast to most previously known SLSNe-I that reside in star-forming dwarf galaxies, ASASSN-15lh appears to be hosted by a luminous galaxy (MK ≈ -25.5) with little star formation. In the 4 months since first detection, ASASSN-15lh radiated (1.1 ± 0.2) × 10(52) ergs, challenging the magnetar model for its engine.
We present basic statistics for all supernovae discovered by the All-Sky Automated Survey for SuperNovae (ASAS-SN) during its first year-and-a-half of operations, spanning 2013 and 2014. We also ...present the same information for all other bright (mV less than or equal to 17), spectroscopically confirmed supernovae discovered from 2014 May 1 through the end of 2014, providing a comparison to the ASAS-SN sample starting from the point where ASAS-SN became operational in both hemispheres. In addition, we present collected redshifts and near-UV through IR magnitudes, where available, for all host galaxies of the bright supernovae in both samples. This work represents a comprehensive catalogue of bright supernovae and their hosts from multiple professional and amateur sources, allowing for population studies that were not previously possible because the all-sky emphasis of ASAS-SN redresses many previously existing biases. In particular, ASAS-SN systematically finds bright supernovae closer to the centres of host galaxies than either other professional surveys or amateurs, a remarkable result given ASAS-SN's poorer angular resolution. This is the first of a series of yearly papers on bright supernovae and their hosts that will be released by the ASAS-SN team.
ABSTRACT On 2014 December 9.61, the All-sky Automated Survey for SuperNovae (ASAS-SN or "Assassin") discovered ASASSN-14lp just ∼2 days after first light using a global array of 14 cm diameter ...telescopes. ASASSN-14lp went on to become a bright supernova (V = 11.94 mag), second only to SN 2014J for the year. We present prediscovery photometry (with a detection less than a day after first light) and ultraviolet through near-infrared photometric and spectroscopic data covering the rise and fall of ASASSN-14lp for more than 100 days. We find that ASASSN-14lp had a broad light curve ( ), a B-band maximum at 2457015.82 0.03, a rise time of days, and moderate host-galaxy extinction ( ). Using ASASSN-14lp, we derive a distance modulus for NGC 4666 of , corresponding to a distance of 14.7 1.5 Mpc. However, adding ASASSN-14lp to the calibrating sample of Type Ia supernovae still requires an independent distance to the host galaxy. Finally, using our early-time photometric and spectroscopic observations, we rule out red giant secondaries and, assuming a favorable viewing angle and explosion time, any nondegenerate companion larger than 0.34 .

The field of iron catalysis often faces hurdles in accommodating its transient and unstable low-valent intermediates. By harnessing the noninnocent character of commercial bathocuproine ligand, we ...managed to develop a reliable functionalization of alkynes with primary, secondary, and tertiary silanes but also with germanium hydrides, catalyzed by a low-valent iron complex. The robustness of the catalyst enabled gram-scale synthesis of vinylsilanes, low catalytic loading, one-pot, hetero, bis-hydrosilylation, but also high steric build-up. Mechanistic studies suggest an important effect of the MgII cation resulting from the reduction of the precatalyst, by assisting the dynamic generation of a highly reactive, under-coordinated iron species from a stable complex.
