Objectives
To compare biofilm‐forming ability, hydrolytic enzymes and ethanol‐derived acetaldehyde production of oral Candida isolated from the patients with oral cancer and matched non‐oral cancer.

Fungal biofilms were grown in RPMI‐1640 medium, and biofilm mass and biofilm activity were assessed using crystal violet staining and XTT salt reduction assays, respectively. Phospholipase, proteinase, and esterase production were measured using agar plate method, while fungal acetaldehyde production was assessed via gas chromatography.
Results
Candida isolated from patients with oral cancer demonstrated significantly higher biofilm mass (P = 0.031), biofilm metabolic activity (P < 0.001), phospholipase (P = 0.002), and proteinase (P = 0.0159) activity than isolates from patients with non‐oral cancer. High ethanol‐derived acetaldehyde‐producing Candida were more prevalent in patients with oral cancer than non‐oral cancer (P = 0.01). In univariate regression analysis, high biofilm mass (P = 0.03) and biofilm metabolic activity (P < 0.001), high phospholipase (P = 0.003), and acetaldehyde production ability (0.01) were significant risk factors for oral cancer; while in the multivariate regression analysis, high biofilm activity (0.01) and phospholipase (P = 0.01) were significantly positive influencing factors on oral cancer.
Conclusion
These data suggest a significant positive association between the ability of Candida isolates to form biofilms, to produce hydrolytic enzymes, and to metabolize alcohol to acetaldehyde with their ability to promote oral cancer development.
Both sharks and humans present a potentially lethal threat to mesopredatory fishes in coral reef systems, with implications for both population dynamics and the role of mesopredatory fishes in reef ...ecosystems. This study quantifies the antipredator behaviours mesopredatory fishes exhibit towards the presence of large coral reef carnivores and compares these behavioural responses to those elicited by the presence of snorkelers. Here, we used snorkelers and animated life-size models of the blacktip reef shark (Carcharhinus melanopterus) to simulate potential predatory threats to mesopredatory reef fishes (lethrinids, lutjanids, haemulids and serranids). The responses of these reef fishes to the models and the snorkelers were compared to those generated by three non-threatening controls (life-size models of a green turtle Chelonia mydas, a PVC-pipe an object control and a Perspex shape a second object control). A Remote Underwater Stereo-Video System (Stereo-RUV) recorded the approach of the different treatments and controls and allowed accurate measurement of Flight Initiation Distance (FID) and categorization of the type of flight response by fishes. We found that mesopredatory reef fishes had greater FIDs in response to the approach of threatening models (1402 ± 402-1533 ± 171 mm; mean ± SE) compared to the controls (706 ± 151-896 ± 8963 mm). There was no significant difference in FID of mesopredatory fishes between the shark model and the snorkeler, suggesting that these treatments provoked similar levels of predator avoidance behaviour. This has implications for researchers monitoring behaviour in situ or using underwater census as a technique to estimate the abundance of reef fishes. Our study suggests that, irrespective of the degree to which sharks actually consume these mesopredatory reef fishes, they still elicit a predictable and consistent antipredator response that has the potential to create risk effects.
Anthropogenic underwater noise is now recognized as a world-wide problem, and recent studies have shown a broad range of negative effects in a variety of taxa. Underwater noise from shipping is ...increasingly recognized as a significant and pervasive pollutant with the potential to impact marine ecosystems on a global scale. We reviewed six regional case studies as examples of recent research and management activities relating to ocean noise in a variety of taxonomic groups, locations, and approaches. However, as no six projects could ever cover all taxa, sites and noise sources, a brief bibliometric analysis places these case studies into the broader historical and topical context of the peer-reviewed ocean noise literature as a whole. The case studies highlighted emerging knowledge of impacts, including the ways that non-injurious effects can still accumulate at the population level, and detailed approaches to guide ocean noise management. They build a compelling case that a number of anthropogenic noise types can affect a variety of marine taxa. Meanwhile, the bibliometric analyses revealed an increasing diversity of ocean noise topics covered and journal outlets since the 1940s. This could be seen in terms of both the expansion of the literature from more physical interests to ecological impacts of noise, management and policy, and consideration of a widening range of taxa. However, if our scientific knowledge base is ever to get ahead of the curve of rapid industrialization of the ocean, we are going to have to identify naïve populations and relatively pristine seas, and construct mechanistic models, so that we can predict impacts before they occur, and guide effective mitigation for the most vulnerable populations.

To perform an evidence-based review of the safety and efficacy of botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT) in the treatment of autonomic and urologic disorders and low back and head pain.
A literature search was ...performed including MEDLINE and Current Contents for therapeutic articles relevant to BoNT and the selected indications. Authors reviewed, abstracted, and classified articles based on the quality of the study (Class I-IV). Conclusions and recommendations were developed based on the highest level of evidence and put into current clinical context.
The highest quality literature available for the respective indications was as follows: axillary hyperhidrosis (two Class I studies); palmar hyperhidrosis (two Class II studies); drooling (four Class II studies); gustatory sweating (five Class III studies); neurogenic detrusor overactivity (two Class I studies); sphincter detrusor dyssynergia in spinal cord injury (two Class II studies); chronic low back pain (one Class II study); episodic migraine (two Class I and two Class II studies); chronic daily headache (four Class II studies); and chronic tension-type headache (two Class I studies).
Botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT) should be offered as a treatment option for the treatment of axillary hyperhidrosis and detrusor overactivity (Level A), should be considered for palmar hyperhidrosis, drooling, and detrusor sphincter dyssynergia after spinal cord injury (Level B), and may be considered for gustatory sweating and low back pain (Level C). BoNT is probably ineffective in episodic migraine and chronic tension-type headache (Level B). There is presently no consistent or strong evidence to permit drawing conclusions on the efficacy of BoNT in chronic daily headache (mainly transformed migraine) (Level U). While clinicians' practice may suggest stronger recommendations in some of these indications, evidence-based conclusions are limited by the availability of data.
Chromosome testing strategies, such as preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy (PGT-A), improve initial IVF outcomes by avoiding unwitting transfer of aneuploid embryos in morphology-based ...selection practices. Newer technologies have revealed that some embryos may appear to have intermediate whole chromosome (or parts of a chromosome termed segmental) copy number results suggesting trophectoderm mosaicism. An embryo with a trophectoderm mosaic-range result may be the only option for transfer for some patients. Recent data suggest that such mosaic embryos can be transferred without added risk of abnormal birth outcomes but may be associated with increased implantation failure and miscarriage rates, with higher values of mosaicism appearing to be less favourable for producing good outcomes. In this Position Statement, we provide guidance to laboratories, clinics, clinicians and counsellors to assist in discussions on the utility and transfer of mosaic embryos.
The importance of the acoustic cuescape is often overlooked in studies of animal orientation. Recent studies have shown that reef noise affects the behaviour and orientation of settlement-stage coral ...reef fish. This response may simply facilitate orientation to reefs; alternatively, acoustic habitat cues could also facilitate the remote selection of suitable settlement habitats. To test which components of reef noise evoke behavioural responses in larval fish, we used light traps to measure the responses of a diverse range of settlement-stage fish to the filtered ‘high’ (570–2000
Hz)- and ‘low’ (<570
Hz)-frequency components of reef noise and compared these catches with those from control ‘silent’ traps. Of the seven families represented by >10 individuals, four (Pomacentridae, Apogonidae, Lethrinidae and Gobiidae) were caught in significantly greater numbers in the high-frequency traps than either the low-frequency or the silent traps. The Syngnathidae preferred high- to low-frequency traps, while the Blenniidae preferred high-frequency to silent traps. Only the Siganidae showed no preference between any of the sound treatments. Although some species-level variation in response was found, the general trend was a preference for high-frequency traps. This study suggests that most settlement-stage fish select the higher-frequency audible component of reef noise, which is produced mainly by marine invertebrates, as a means of selectively orienting towards suitable settlement habitats. The results highlight potential impacts of anthropogenic noise pollution and habitat modification in affecting the natural behaviour of reef fish at a critical stage in their life history.
We compared catches of settlement-stage reef fishes in light traps attached to under-water speakers playing reef sounds with those of silent traps during a summer recruitment season at Lizard Island, ...Great Barrier Reef, Australia. Of the total 40191 reef fishes we collected, significantly more (67%; Wilcoxon and Binomial tests: p< 0.001) appeared in the traps with broadcast reef noise. Traps deployed with speakers consistently caught a greater diversity of species (Wilcoxon test: p< 0.001, total 81 vs 68) than did silent traps. This study provides a clear demonstration that the settlement-stages of a broad range of families of coral reef fishes are attracted to reef sounds.
Acoustic landscapes, or soundscapes, can vary due to biological (‘biophony’), geophysical (‘geophony’) and anthropogenic (‘anthrophony’) components, and in some environments, such as many coral ...reefs, biophony dominates the soundscape. We compared 126 sound recordings from 3 different times of day (day, dusk and night) at 42 locations with concurrent fish and habitat surveys to investigate the relationships of acoustic parameters with biological and physical characteristics of coral reefs in the Gambier Archipelago, French Polynesia. Principal Component Analysis revealed that most of the variability in soundscapes could be described using only 4 factors: (1) full bandwidth root mean squared sound pressure level (SPL; 0.01 to 22.5 kHz in dB re 1 μPa); SPL of frequencies (2) > 0.63 kHz and (3) between 0.16 and 2.5 kHz; and (4) the number of snaps made by snapping shrimp. Number of snaps in a recording and SPL above 0.63 kHz were negatively related to live coral cover, and the density and diversity of adult and juvenile fish, but positively related to dead coral cover and time of day (as the day progressed from day to dusk to night). Full bandwidth SPL and midrange SPL were positively related to sea state, depth, Porites coral, the coral forms ‘branched’ and ‘massive’ and whether the bottom was coverd by coral (live or dead). Soundscape recordings can contribute to a more complete assessment of ecological landscapes and, in cases where logistical constraints preclude traditional survey methods, passive acoustic monitoring may give valuable information on whether habitats are changing over time.
Previous human clinical trials of insulin-like growth factor type I (IGF-1) in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) have been inconsistent. This phase III, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled ...study was undertaken to address whether IGF-1 benefited patients with ALS.
A total of 330 patients from 20 medical centers were randomized to receive 0.05 mg/kg body weight of human recombinant IGF-1 given subcutaneously twice daily or placebo for 2 years. The primary outcome measure was change in their manual muscle testing score. Secondary outcome measures included tracheostomy-free survival and rate of change in the revised ALS functional rating scale. Intention to treat analysis was used.
There was no difference between treatment groups in the primary or secondary outcome measures after the 2-year treatment period.
Insulin-like growth factor type I does not provide benefit for patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
