To study the effectiveness of a multi-component intervention model of nutrition and lifestyle education on behavior modification, anthropometry and metabolic risk profile of urban Asian-Indian ...adolescents in North India.
Two schools matched for student strength and middle socioeconomic strata were randomly allocated to intervention and control group. Changes in nutrition-related knowledge, attitude, lifestyle practices, food frequency and body image of eleventh-grade students (15-17 years) in both schools were tested using a validated questionnaire. Anthropometric and biochemical measurements were made using standard methods. Segmental body composition analysis was carried out using an 8-electrode multifrequency bioelectrical impedance method of body fat estimation.
At 6 months follow-up, significant improvement in several domains of knowledge was observed in intervention children (n=99; males=60; females=39) as compared with control school children (n=102; males=61; females=41). In the intervention group, significantly lower proportion of children consumed aerated drinks (15.1%; P<0.001) and energy-dense unhealthy foods (8.9%; P=0.03), whereas significantly higher proportion brought tiffin (packed lunch) to school (14.9%; P=0.004) and brought a fruit in their tiffin (30.7%; P<0.001) as compared with the control group. Significant decrease in mean waist circumference (P=0.02, 95% confidence interval (CI)=-2.43,-0.17), sagittal abdominal diameter (P<0.001, 95% CI=-0.82,-0.09), waist-to-hip ratio (P=0.02, 95% CI=-0.03,-0.004) and fasting blood glucose (P=0.05, 95% CI=-0.09, 5.00) was seen in intervention as compared with control school children.
Multi-component model of nutrition and lifestyle education was successful in improving the nutrition-related knowledge, eating habits and lifestyle practices, and resulted in beneficial changes in anthropometric and biochemical profiles of the Asian Indian adolescents. This model should be applied on countrywide basis to prevent obesity and diabetes.

-acetylaspartate (NAA) is decreased in the multiple sclerosis (MS) brain. NAA is synthesized in neurons by the enzyme
N
-acetyltransferase-8-like (NAT8L) and ...broken down in oligodendrocytes by aspartoacylase (ASPA) into acetate and aspartate. We have hypothesized that NAA links the metabolism of axons with oligodendrocytes to support myelination. To test this hypothesis, we performed lipidomic analyses using liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS) and high-performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC) to identify changes in myelin lipid composition in postmortem MS brains and in NAT8L knockout (NAT8L
−/−
) mice which do not synthesize NAA. We found reduced levels of sphingomyelin in MS normal appearing white matter that mirrored decreased levels of NAA. We also discovered decreases in the amounts of sphingomyelin and sulfatide lipids in the brains of NAT8L
−/−
mice compared to controls. Metabolomic analysis of primary cultures of oligodendrocytes treated with NAA revealed increased levels of α-ketoglutarate, which has been reported to regulate histone demethylase activity. Consistent with this, NAA treatment resulted in alterations in the levels of histone H3 methylation, including H3K4me3, H3K9me2, and H3K9me3. The H3K4me3 histone mark regulates cellular energetics, metabolism, and growth, while H3K9me3 has been linked to alterations in transcriptional repression in developing oligodendrocytes. We also noted the NAA treatment was associated with increases in the expression of genes involved in sulfatide and sphingomyelin synthesis in cultured oligodendrocytes. This is the first report demonstrating that neuronal-derived NAA can signal to the oligodendrocyte nucleus. These data suggest that neuronal-derived NAA signals through epigenetic mechanisms in oligodendrocytes to support or maintain myelination.
This study investigated sorption and biodegradation behaviour of 14 organic micropollutants (OMP) in soil columns representative of the first metre (oxic conditions) of the river bank filtration ...(RBF) process. Breakthrough curves were modelled to differentiate between OMP sorption and biodegradation. The main objective of this study was to investigate if the OMP biodegradation rate could be related to the physico-chemical properties (charge, hydrophobicity and molecular weight) or functional groups of the OMPs. Although trends were observed between charge or hydrophobicity and the biodegradation rate for charged compounds, a statistically significant linear relationship for the complete OMP mixture could not be obtained using these physico-chemical properties. However, a statistically significant relationship was obtained between biological degradation rates and the OMP functional groups. The presence of ethers and carbonyl groups will increase biodegradability, while the presence of amines, ring structures, aliphatic ethers and sulphur will decrease biodegradability. This predictive model based on functional groups can be used by drinking water companies to make a first estimate whether a newly detected compound will be biodegraded during the first metre of RBF or that additional treatment is required. In addition, the influence of active and inactive biomass (biosorption), sand grains and the water matrix on OMP sorption was found to be negligible under the conditions investigated in this study. Retardation factors for most compounds were close to 1, indicating mobile behaviour of these compounds during soil passage. Adaptation of the biomass towards the dosed OMPs was not observed for a 6 month period, implying that new developed RBF sites might not be able to biodegrade compounds such as atrazine and sulfamethoxazole in the first few months of operation.
This paper uses artificial neural networks (ANN), combined with k-means clustering, to understand the complex time series of PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations at a coastal location of New Zealand based ...on data from a single site. Out of available meteorological parameters from the network (wind speed, wind direction, solar radiation, temperature, relative humidity), key factors governing the pattern of the time series concentrations were identified through input sensitivity analysis performed on the trained neural network model. The transport pathways of particulate matter under these key meteorological parameters were further analysed through bivariate concentration polar plots and k-means clustering techniques. The analysis shows that the external sources such as marine aerosols and local sources such as traffic and biomass burning contribute equally to the particulate matter concentrations at the study site. These results are in agreement with the results of receptor modelling by the Auckland Council based on Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF). Our findings also show that contrasting concentration–wind speed relationships exist between marine aerosols and local traffic sources resulting in very noisy and seemingly large random PM10 concentrations. The inclusion of cluster rankings as an input parameter to the ANN model showed a statistically significant (p < 0.005) improvement in the performance of the ANN time series model and also showed better performance in picking up high concentrations. For the presented case study, the correlation coefficient between observed and predicted concentrations improved from 0.77 to 0.79 for PM2.5 and from 0.63 to 0.69 for PM10 and reduced the root mean squared error (RMSE) from 5.00 to 4.74 for PM2.5 and from 6.77 to 6.34 for PM10. The techniques presented here enable the user to obtain an understanding of potential sources and their transport characteristics prior to the implementation of costly chemical analysis techniques or advanced air dispersion models.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a neuro-inflammatory and demyelinating disease. Downregulation of neuronal mitochondrial gene expression and activity have been reported in several studies of MS. We have ...previously shown that hemoglobin-β (Hbb) signals to the nucleus of neurons and upregulates H3K4me3, a histone mark involved in regulating cellular metabolism and differentiation. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of erythropoietin (EPO) on the upregulation of hemoglobin and mitochondrial-associated neuroprotection. We found that administering EPO (5000 IU/kg intraperitoneally) to mice upregulated brain Hbb expression, levels of H3K4me3, expression of mitochondrial complex III, complex V, and mitochondrial respiration. We also found that the neuronal mitochondrial metabolite N-acetylaspartate (NAA), a marker of neuronal mitochondrial activity, was increased with EPO treatment. Further, we measured the effects of EPO on preventing mitochondrial deficits in the cuprizone toxic demyelinating mouse model of MS. We found that EPO prevented cuprizone-mediated decreases in Hbb, complex III, and NAA. Our data suggest that EPO mediated regulation of Hbb supports neuronal energetics and may provide neuroprotection in MS and other neurodegenerative diseases where a dysfunction of mitochondria contributes to disease.
In the present work, a novel cross-linked polymer was synthesized though the anionic polymerization of cyanoacrylate with moisture as an initiator, methylene-bis-acrylamide as a cross-linker, and ...linseed oil as a spacer. Two layers of the synthesized polymer was coated over polyacrylamide for its homogenous impregnation in Class-G cement slurry for the synthesis of cement core. Fourier Transformation Infrared spectroscopy and X-Ray diffraction spectrum of the synthesized polymer and cement core were obtained to investigate the presence of different functional groups and phases. Moreover, the morphologies of the dual-encapsulated polyacrylamide was observed through scanning electron microscopy. Furthermore, the water-absorption capacity of the synthesized dual-encapsulated polyacrylamide in normal and saline conditions were tested. A cement core impregnated with 16% of dosage of dual-encapsulated polyacrylamide possesses an effective self-healing capability during the water-flow test. Moreover, the maximum linear expansion of the cement core was observed to be 26%. Thus, the impregnation of dual-encapsulated polyacrylamide in cement slurry can exhibit a superior self-healing behavior upon water absorption in an oil well.
This study investigated the biodegradability of the herbicides isoproturon and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) in sequencing batch reactors (SBRs). Two laboratory-scale (2
L liquid volume) ...SBRs were employed: one reactor performing under aerobic and the other under anaerobic conditions. The aerobic SBR was operated at an ambient temperature (22±2
°C), while the anaerobic SBR was run in the lower mesophilic range (30±2
°C). Each bioreactor was seeded with a 3:1 mixture (by weight) of fresh sludge and biomass that had been previously exposed to both herbicides. The effect of herbicide concentration on either treatment process was explored at a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 48
h, using glucose as a supplemental carbon substrate. Although no isoproturon degradation was observed in either system during the study, complete 2,4-D removal occurred after an acclimation period of approximately 30
d (aerobic SBR) and 70
d (anaerobic SBR). The aerobic reactor achieved complete 2,4-D utilization at feed concentrations up to 500
mg/L. A further increase to 700
mg/L, however, proved to be inhibitory since 2,4-D biodegradation was negligible. On the other hand, the anaerobic SBR was able to degrade 120
mg/L of 2,4-D, which corresponds to 40% of the maximum feed concentration applied. Moreover, glucose was consumed first throughout the experiment in a sequential utilization pattern relating to 2,4-D, with biodegradation of both substrates following closely first-order kinetics.
The objective of this study is to examine the neurodevelopmental outcome at 30 to 42 months corrected age of preterm infants with histological chorioamnionitis (HCA).
The study design is a ...retrospective cohort study with a prospective follow-up. All surviving infants with birth gestational age <29 weeks, born between 2000 and 2006, who had a neurodevelopmental assessment at 30 to 42 months corrected age were included. We compared the neurodevelopmental outcomes of infants with or without HCA.
Of the 384 infants, 197 (51%) were born to mothers with evidence of HCA. Infants with HCA were of lower gestational age (26 weeks vs 26.6 weeks) and more likely to have intraventricular hemorrhage (27.9% vs 14.4%), periventricular leukomalacia (2.5% vs 0%) and retinopathy of prematurity ≥ stage 3 (31.4% vs 22.4%). On univariate analysis, infants with HCA were more likely to have cerebral palsy (12.6% vs 6.4%, P=0.04). There was no significant difference in the incidence of cognitive delay, deafness, blindness, or total major disabilities between the two groups. After adjusting for perinatal variables, HCA was associated with increased risk of cerebral palsy (odds ratio (OR): 2.45; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.11 to 5.40), but not for total major disabilities (OR: 1.22; 95% CI: 0.64 to 2.34). There was a trend towards increased risk of cerebral palsy with HCA with funisitis.
HCA is associated with increased risk of cerebral palsy at 30 to 42 months corrected age in preterm infants.
We report a significant reduction in plasma methionine concentrations in relapse remitting multiple sclerosis (MS) patients compared to controls. In vivo studies demonstrate that changes in ...peripheral methionine levels in mice can regulate histone H3 methylation and expression of DNA methyltransferase 3A (DNMT3A) centrally, in the cerebral cortex. Therefore, we propose that decreases in circulating methionine represent one of the earliest manifestations of dysregulated methionine metabolism in MS with potential impacts on both histone H3 and DNA methylation in the central nervous system.
•Methionine is significantly reduced in blood plasma of MS patients at relapse remitting stages.•Levels of H3K4me3 are reduced in postmortem MS cortical samples.•Peripheral methionine administration increases SAM and methionine in mouse brain.•Methionine supplementation increases levels of H3K4me3 and DNMT3A in mouse brain.•Dietary supplementation that supports methionine metabolism may be helpful in multiple sclerosis.
