We studied structure and thermodynamic properties of cubic and tetragonal phases of pure uranium and U-Mo alloys using atomistic simulations: molecular dynamics and density functional theory. The ...main attention was paid to the metastable γ0-phase that is formed in U-Mo alloys at low temperature. Structure of γ0-phase is similar to body-centered tetragonal (bct) lattice with displacement of a central atom in the basic cell along 001 direction. Such displacements have opposite orientations for part of the neighbouring basic cells. In this case, such ordering of the displacements can be designated as antiferro-displacement. Formation of such complex structure may be interpreted through forming of short U-U bonds. At heating, the tetragonal structure transforms into cubic γs-phase, still showing ordering of central atom displacements. With rise in temperature, γs-phase transforms to γ-phase with a quasi body-centered cubic (q-bcc) lattice. The local positions of uranium atoms in γ-phase correspond to γs-phase, however, orientations of the central atom displacements become disordered. Transition from γ0 to γ can be considered as antiferro-to paraelastic transition of order-disorder type.
This approach to the structure description of uranium alloy allows to explain a number of unusual features found in the experiments: anisotropy of lattice at low temperature; remarkably high self-diffusion mobility in γ-phase; decreasing of electrical resistivity at heating for some alloys. In addition, important part of this work is the development of new interatomic potential for U-Mo system made with taking into account details of studied structures.

Endothelial and smooth muscle cells are considered promising resources for regenerative medicine and cell replacement therapy. It has been shown that both types of cells are heterogeneous depending ...on the type of vessels and organs in which they are located. Therefore, isolation of endothelial and smooth muscle cells from tissues relevant to the area of research is necessary for the adequate study of specific pathologies. However, sources of specialized human endothelial and smooth muscle cells are limited, and the search for new sources is still relevant. The main goal of our study is to demonstrate that functional endothelial and smooth muscle cells can be obtained from an available source-post-surgically discarded cardiac tissue from the right atrial appendage and right ventricular myocardium.
Heterogeneous primary cell cultures were enzymatically isolated from cardiac explants and then grown in specific endothelial and smooth muscle growth media on collagen IV-coated surfaces. The population of endothelial cells was further enriched by immunomagnetic sorting for CD31, and the culture thus obtained was characterized by immunocytochemistry, ultrastructural analysis and in vitro functional tests. The angiogenic potency of the cells was examined by injecting them, along with Matrigel, into immunodeficient mice. Cells were also seeded on characterized polycaprolactone/chitosan membranes with subsequent analysis of cell proliferation and function.
Endothelial cells isolated from cardiac explants expressed CD31, VE-cadherin and VEGFR2 and showed typical properties, namely, cytoplasmic Weibel-Palade bodies, metabolism of acetylated low-density lipoproteins, formation of capillary-like structures in Matrigel, and production of extracellular matrix and angiogenic cytokines. Isolated smooth muscle cells expressed extracellular matrix components as well as α-actin and myosin heavy chain. Vascular cells derived from cardiac explants demonstrated the ability to stimulate angiogenesis in vivo. Endothelial cells proliferated most effectively on membranes made of polycaprolactone and chitosan blended in a 25:75 ratio, neutralized by a mixture of alkaline and ethanol. Endothelial and smooth muscle cells retained their functional properties when seeded on the blended membranes.
We established endothelial and smooth muscle cell cultures from human right atrial appendage and right ventricle post-operative explants. The isolated cells revealed angiogenic potential and may be a promising source of patient-specific cells for regenerative medicine.
This paper focuses on the thermodynamic study of solution of aromatic amino acid
l
-tryptophan in water. Free energy, its enthalpic and entropic terms, heat capacity of solution are computed in a ...wide temperature range using the combination of calorimetric data and solubility value at the reference temperature via the Gibbs–Helmholtz equation. Solubility values from 283.15 to 343.15 K are also estimated and compared with experimental ones. The results obtained clearly indicate that this approach reproduces very well both thermodynamic functions of solution and solubility values for slightly soluble species.
•The influence of a soluble fullerene C60 derivative (F-828) on HELFs was studied.•At <0.1μM F-828 promotes cell processes of proliferation and reparation.•Between 5 and 25μM F-828 induces ROS ...generation and DNA breaks in nuclei.•F-828 concentrations higher than 25μM are toxic for HELFs.•F-828 can potentially induce fibrosis in the pulmonary tissue.
Water-soluble fullerenes have been studied as potential nanovectors and therapeutic agents, but their possible toxicity is of concern. We have studied the effects of F-828, a soluble fullerene C60 derivative, on diploid human embryonic lung fibroblasts (HELFs) in vitro. F-828 causes complex time-dependent changes in ROS levels. Inhibition of Nox4 activity by plumbagin blocks F-828-dependent ROS elevation. F-828 induces DNA breaks, as measured by the comet assay and γH2AX expression, and the activities of the transcription factors NF-kB and p53 increase. F-828 concentrations>25μM are cytotoxic; cell death occurs by necrosis. Expression levels of TGF-β, RHOA, RHOC, ROCK1, and SMAD2 increase following exposure to F-828. Our results raise the possibility that fullerene F-828 may induce pulmonary fibrosis in vivo.
In this work, screening studies of the cytotoxic effect of chlorins with fragments of di-, tri-, and pentaethylene glycol at the macrocycle periphery in relation to HeLa, A549, and HT29 cells were ...performed. It is shown that, despite different hydrophobicity, all the compounds studied have a comparable photodynamic effect. The conjugate of chlorin e
with pentaethylene glycol, which has the lowest tendency to association among the studied compounds with tropism for low density lipoproteins and the best characteristics of the formation of molecular complexes with Tween 80, has a significant difference in dark and photoinduced toxicity (ratio IC
/IC
approximately 2 orders of magnitude for all cell lines), which allows to hope for a sufficiently large "therapeutic window". A study of the interaction of this compound with HeLa cells shows that the substance penetrates the cell and, after red light irradiation induces ROS appearance inside the cell, associated, apparently, with the photogeneration of singlet oxygen. These data indicate that photoinduced toxic effects are caused by damage to intracellular structures as a result of oxidative stress. Programmed type of cell death characterized with caspase-3 induction is prevailing. So, the conjugate of chlorin e
with pentaethylene glycol is a promising antitumor PS that can be successfully solubilized with Tween 80, which makes it suitable for further in vivo studies.
Abstract
The paper comparatively analyses the accuracy of land cover classification in the riparian zone of the Malaya Kokshaga river in the Mari El Republic of Russia using Sentinel-2A satellite ...images with the algorithms of supervised classification: Maximum Likelihood (ML), Decision Tree (DT) and Neural Net (NN) in the ENVI-5.2 software package. Six main classes of land cover were identified based on field studies: coniferous, mixed (deciduous), shrublands, herbaceous, and water. The assessment of the area and the structure of land cover showed that forest covers 76% of the entire territory of the riparian area of the Malaya Kokshaga river. The analysis of the results of thematic mapping shows that the overall classification accuracy obtained by the ML algorithm is 96.09%, by NN - 94.51%, and by DT - 86.54%. The producer’s accuracy and user’s accuracy for most classes have the maximum value when the ML algorithm is used. For the NN algorithm, the maximum value of producer’s accuracy is observed for the mixed (deciduous) class, while for the DT algorithm – for the coniferous. When classified using all three algorithms the water and bare land classes were mixed, which requires more detailed work when estimating riparian forest ecosystems.
The composition of lipids isolated from the middle leaves and juice of 7-year-old
Aloe arborescens
Mill. and the inhibitory efficiency of lipids from the leaves of this aloe species were studied. The ...phospholipid fractions were divided by means of TLC method. The quantitative ratio of phospholipid fractions was analyzed spectrophotometrically. The most essential differences in the composition of phospholipids (PL) from aloe leaves and juice were revealed for the ratio of the more poorly oxidizable fractions. The more low relative content of PL in the total lipid composition from aloe leaves compared with than in lipids from juice result in 16% diminution in the molar ratio sterols/PL in the composition of lipids from aloe juice because shares of sterols are the same in lipids from aloe leaves and juice. Lipids from aloe leaves are shown to characterize the high inhibitory efficiency that is demonstrated by model of the low temperature methyl oleate autoxidation in a thin layer. Using UV spectroscopy and the mathematic processing of UV spectra by Gauss method the presence of biologically active substances contained in lipids was analyzed. There are only flavonoids in the chloroform solution of lipids from aloe juice, while in lipids from aloe leaves, in addition to flavonoids, carotenoids is also found at a low quantity.
