Arms races among invertebrates, intelligence gathering by the immune system and alarm calls by marmots are but a few of nature's security strategies that have been tested and modified over billions ...of years. This provocative book applies lessons from nature to our own toughest security problems--from global terrorism to the rise of infectious disease to natural disasters. Written by a truly multidisciplinary group including paleobiologists, anthropologists, psychologists, ecologists, and national security experts, it considers how models and ideas from evolutionary biology can improve national security strategies ranging from risk assessment, security analysis, and public policy to long-term strategic goals.
We have used a total of 496 sample sites to calibrate a simple regression model for calculating dissolved inorganic nutrient fluxes via runoff to the ocean. The regression uses the logarithms of ...runoff and human population as the independent variables and estimates the logarithms of dissolved inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus loading with R values near 0.8. This predictive capability is about the same as has been derived for total nutrient loading with process-based models requiring more detailed information on independent variables. We conclude that population and runoff are robust proxies for the more detailed application, landscape modification, and in-stream processing estimated by more process-based models. The regression model has then been applied to a demonstration data set of 1353 river catchments draining to the sea from the North American continent south of the Canadian border. The geographic extents of these basins were extracted from a 1-km digital elevation model for North America, and both runoff and population were estimated for each basin. Most of the basins (72% of the total) are smaller than 10 km, and both runoff and population density are higher and more variable among small basins than among larger ones. While total load to the ocean can probably be adequately estimated from large systems only, analysis of the geographic distribution of nutrient loading requires consideration of the small basins, which can exhibit significant hydrologic and demographic heterogeneity between systems over their range even within the same geographic region. High-resolution regional and local analysis is necessary for environmental assessment and management.
Our aim was to identify risk factors for aspiration following concurrent chemoradiation for oropharyngeal cancer. 46 patients with locally advanced oropharyngeal carcinoma underwent concurrent ...chemoradiation at our institution. All patients underwent modified barium swallow to assess dysphagia severity and to determine the need for continued tube feedings after treatment. Dysphagia severity was graded as 1-7. There were 5 Grade 2, 11 Grade 3, 5 Grade 4, 5 Grade 5, 10 Grade 6 and 10 Grade 7 scores. 25 patients (54%) developed aspiration (5 trace, 20 severe). The aspiration rate for T1-T2 and T3-T4 tumours was 31% and 67%, respectively (p = 0.03). There was no statistical difference in the aspiration rate between the base of the tongue and tonsillar carcinoma (p = 0.23). Despite anatomical organ preservation, most patients with locally advanced oropharyngeal carcinoma had moderate to severe dysphagia after chemoradiation. Patients with large tumours had a significant risk of developing aspiration following treatment.

45% of the women (135/303) had a psychiatric disorder; 42% (127) of the sample had depression or anxiety, or both; there was minor depression in 82 (27.1%), an anxiety disorder in 26 (8.6%), major depression in 29 (9.6%) and a phobic disorder in 21 (6.9%). 20% of women (61) had more than one disorder. On quality-of-life measures nearly one-third of the women felt less attractive and most had lost interest in sexual activity. There was substantial distress about hair loss. Symptoms of lymphoedema were described by 13 women (4.3%). Breast conservation surgery was associated with a better body image (P<0.01).
Women recently diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer have high rates of psychiatric and psychological disturbance. Quality of life is substantially affected. Clinicians should actively explore their patients' psychological adjustment to enable early recognition and treatment of these disorders.
A cornerstone of Einstein's special relativity is Lorentz invariance-the postulate that all observers measure exactly the same speed of light in vacuum, independent of photon-energy. While special ...relativity assumes that there is no fundamental length-scale associated with such invariance, there is a fundamental scale (the Planck scale, lPlanck 1.62 × 10-33 cm or EPlanck = MPlanckc2 1.22 × 1019 GeV), at which quantum effects are expected to strongly affect the nature of space-time. There is great interest in the (not yet validated) idea that Lorentz invariance might break near the Planck scale. A key test of such violation of Lorentz invariance is a possible variation of photon speed with energy. Even a tiny variation in photon speed, when accumulated over cosmological light-travel times, may be revealed by observing sharp features in -ray burst (GRB) light-curves. Here we report the detection of emission up to ∼31 GeV from the distant and short GRB 090510. We find no evidence for the violation of Lorentz invariance, and place a lower limit of 1.2EPlanck on the scale of a linear energy dependence (or an inverse wavelength dependence), subject to reasonable assumptions about the emission (equivalently we have an upper limit of lPlanck/1.2 on the length scale of the effect). Our results disfavour quantum-gravity theories in which the quantum nature of space-time on a very small scale linearly alters the speed of light.
The sequence of glucagon-like peptide-1 (7-36) amide (GLP-1) is completely conserved in all mammalian species studied, implying that it plays a critical physiological role. We have shown that GLP-1 ...and its specific receptors are present in the hypothalamus. No physiological role for central GLP-1 has been established. We report here that intracerebroventricular (ICV) GLP-1 powerfully inhibits feeding in fasted rats. ICV injection of the specific GLP-1-receptor antagonist, exendin (9-39), blocked the inhibitory effect of GLP-1 on food intake. Exendin (9-39) alone had no influence on fast-induced feeding but more than doubled food intake in satiated rats, and augmented the feeding response to the appetite stimulant, neuropeptide Y. Induction of c-fos is a marker of neuronal activation. Following ICV GLP-1 injection, c-fos appeared exclusively in the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus and central nucleus of the amygdala, and this was inhibited by prior administration of exendin (9-39). Both of these regions of the brain are of primary importance in the regulation of feeding. These findings suggest that central GLP-1 is a new physiological mediator of satiety.
The MiniBooNE Collaboration observes unexplained electronlike events in the reconstructed neutrino energy range from 200 to 475 MeV. With 6.46x10;{20} protons on target, 544 electronlike events are ...observed in this energy range, compared to an expectation of 415.2+/-43.4 events, corresponding to an excess of 128.8+/-20.4+/-38.3 events. The shape of the excess in several kinematic variables is consistent with being due to either nu_{e} and nuover _{e} charged-current scattering or nu_{mu} neutral-current scattering with a photon in the final state. No significant excess of events is observed in the reconstructed neutrino energy range from 475 to 1250 MeV, where 408 events are observed compared to an expectation of 385.9+/-35.7 events.
