A number of tablet coatings are available to provide a controlled release of pharmaceutically active compounds in the stomach or intestine using both instant or sustained released systems. The ...preferred properties of these tablet coatings are a low solution viscosity (preferable in water) combined with a phase separated morphology, showing good mechanical properties. PEO‐g‐PVAl copolymers have been developed as an instant‐release tablet coating, and were obtained via a conventional radical polymerisation of VAc in the presence of PEO. No free PEO was observed in the PEO‐g‐PVAl copolymers 1f and 1i using 2D LCCC‐SEC and MALDI‐TOF analysis. Next to the requirement of being PEO free, the PEO‐g‐PVAl copolymers show a good combination of film forming properties, a fast dissolution and a low solution viscosity in water. The phase separated morphology, as demonstrated by TEM, DSC, DMTA, and WAXS experiments, should provide the PEO‐g‐PVAl copolymers with relatively constant mechanical properties. A model reaction, using 2‐methoxyethyl‐ether and 1,4,7,10‐tetraoxacyclododecane, has been developed to imitate the grafting reaction of VAc on PEO. Using this model reaction and using the same reaction conditions (temperature, initiator, concentration, VAc:“PEO” ratio, etc.) as applied in the PEO‐g‐PVAl polymerisation procedure, a degree of grafting for PEO of 13±3% was found. Comparing this figure with the results of LCCC‐SEC and MALDI‐TOF measurements, this figure seems a few percent too high, pointing to a slightly increased reactivity of the two model compounds compared to the PEO used.
A healthy diet rich in fish, fruit, and vegetables, moderate in alcoholic beverages, and low in dairy products has been associated with lower circulating concentrations of biomarkers of endothelial ...dysfunction (ED) and low-grade inflammation (LGI). It is, however, unknown how consumption of these food groups affects ED and/or LGI over time. We measured diet by the computer-assisted crosscheck dietary history method at 36 ± 0.63 y of age (n = 301, women = 161). At 36 and 42 y of age, we measured von Willebrand factor, soluble intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (sICAM-1), soluble endothelial selectin, soluble vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 and soluble thrombomodulin (circulating biomarkers of ED); and C-reactive protein, serum amyloid A, IL-6, IL-8, TNFα, and sICAM-1 (circulating biomarkers of LGI). We investigated the associations between food groups and changes in combined biomarker Z-scores of ED and LGI higher scores associated with greater risk of (incident) cardiovascular disease. After adjustment for sex, energy intake, BMI, physical activity, alcohol consumption, smoking behavior, and other food groups, consumption of fish (per 100 g/wk), but none of the other food groups, was inversely associated with changes in ED β (95%CI) = -0.06 (-0.10; -0.02); P = 0.003 and LGI -0.05 (-0.09; -0.003); P = 0.036. Additionally, EPA+DHA intake was inversely associated with changes in ED β (95%CI) = -0.13 (-0.19; -0.07); P ≤ 0.001 and LGI -0.09 (-0.16; -0.02); P = 0.013 and explained 83 and 40% of the association between fish and changes in ED and LGI. In conclusion, fish consumption, but not fruit, vegetable, alcoholic beverage, or dairy product consumption, was associated with decreased ED and LGI in healthy adults. PUBLICATION ABSTRACT
The reporting of suspected adverse drug reactions by health care professionals to monitoring agencies 1 and to medical journals 2 has been important in alerting doctors to drug safety problems, but ...Mitchell et al suggested that the time lag to the first reports of adverse reactions might be shortened if patients themselves reported adverse events. 3 For a newly introduced antidepressant we compared the time to reporting of adverse drug reactions by patients and by health care professionals. The information available from patients in the telephone service was, however, often crude and incomplete in comparison with professional adverse drug reaction reports. ...the telephone service cannot be relied on as an independent reporting system; it might generate too many false alarms.
In this paper we explore how we can use technology to help people to stay motivated to do home fitnessing. Two experiments with a total of 48 participants were performed, both deploying a bicycling ...task in a virtual reality, one focusing of effects of immersion, the other on the intrinsic impact of movement. From the results it becomes apparent that user and technology can cooperate to achieve a optimum home fitnessing experience.
