Abstract
Cosmic metals are widely believed to be produced by supernovae (SNe) and compact-object mergers. Here, we discuss the nucleosynthesis of neutrino-dominated accretion flows (NDAFs) with ...outflows in the centers of core-collapse SNe (CCSNe), and show that the outflows from NDAFs can have a significant contribution to the
56
Ni abundances of faint explosions if the masses of the progenitor stars are within about 25–50
M
⊙
. Less-massive progenitor stars can produce more
56
Ni than their more-massive counterparts in the NDAF outflow nucleosynthesis channel. Therefore, we find that the total (i.e., CCSNe and NDAF outflows)
56
Ni mass per CCSN depends only weakly upon the mass of the progenitor star. In terms of metallicity evolution, the ratio of
56
Fe (produced by the decay of
56
Ni) mass to the initial total gas mass can increase by ∼1.95 times if the upper limits of the nucleosynthesis yields from NDAF outflows and CCSNe are considered. Our results might have significant implications for the chemical evolution of the solar neighborhood, galaxies, and active galactic nuclei.
Oceanic production and occurrence of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) and its subsequent ventilation to the atmosphere significantly contribute to the global sulfur cycle and impact the climate regulation. ...Spatial distributions of DMS, dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP, precursor of DMS), and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO, oxidation product of DMS), production and removal processes of DMS (including biological production, microbial consumption, photo‐degradation, and sea‐to‐air exchange), and biogenic contributions to the atmospheric sulfate burden were simultaneously studied in the western Pacific Ocean during winter. Sea surface DMS, DMSP, and DMSO were strongly correlated and had similar distribution patterns. The DMS photo‐degradation efficiency ratio (normalized using incident photon flux density) for ultraviolet B radiation (UVB): ultraviolet A radiation (UVA): photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) was 391: 36: 1. However, considering the solar spectral composition, the actual contributions of UVB, UVA, and PAR to DMS photo‐degradation in surface waters were 40.6% ± 10.7%, 41.2% ± 15.6%, and 18.2% ± 7.2%, respectively. When integrated across the entire mixed layer, UVA and PAR became the dominant drivers, accounting for 45.2% ± 18.0% and 38.0% ± 17.3% of DMS photo‐degradation, respectively, as UVB was significantly attenuated in seawater. The DMS budget of the entire mixed layer indicated that microbial consumption, photo‐degradation, and ventilation accounted for about 74.3% ± 11.9%, 19.3% ± 9.3%, and 6.5% ± 4.0% of total DMS removal, respectively. Even if ventilation was a minor DMS removal pathway, DMS emissions still contributed approximately 45.2% ± 25.6% of the atmospheric non‐sea‐salt sulfate burden over the western Pacific Ocean.
ABSTRACT
Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) might be powered by black hole (BH) hyperaccretion systems via the Blandford–Znajek (BZ) mechanism or neutrino annihilation from neutrino-dominated accretion flows ...(NDAFs). Magnetic coupling (MC) between the inner disc and BH can transfer angular momentum and energy from the fast-rotating BH to the disc. The neutrino luminosity and neutrino annihilation luminosity are both efficiently enhanced by the MC process. In this paper, we study the structure, luminosity, MeV neutrinos, and gravitational waves (GWs) of magnetized NDAFs (MNDAFs) under the assumption that both the BZ and MC mechanisms are present. The results indict that the BZ mechanism will compete with the neutrino annihilation luminosity to trigger jets under the different partitions of the two magnetic mechanisms. The typical neutrino luminosity and annihilation luminosity of MNDAFs are definitely higher than those of NDAFs. The typical peak energy of neutrino spectra of MNDAFs is higher than that of NDAFs, but similar to those of core-collapse supernovae. Moreover, if the MC process is dominant, then the GWs originating from the anisotropic neutrino emission will be stronger particularly for discs with high accretion rates.
Numerous variations are known to occur in the chloroplast genomes of parasitic plants. We determined the complete chloroplast genome sequences of two hemiparasitic species, Taxillus chinensis and T. ...sutchuenensis, using Illumina and PacBio sequencing technologies. These species are the first members of the family Loranthaceae to be sequenced. The complete chloroplast genomes of T. chinensis and T. sutchuenensis comprise circular 121,363 and 122,562 bp-long molecules with quadripartite structures, respectively. Compared with the chloroplast genomes of Nicotiana tabacum and Osyris alba, all ndh genes as well as three ribosomal protein genes, seven tRNA genes, four ycf genes, and the infA gene of these two species have been lost. The results of the maximum likelihood and neighbor-joining phylogenetic trees strongly support the theory that Loranthaceae and Viscaceae are monophyletic clades. This research reveals the effect of a parasitic lifestyle on the chloroplast structure and genome content of T. chinensis and T. sutchuenensis, and enhances our understanding of the discrepancies in terms of assembly results between Illumina and PacBio.
Long-duration gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs) associated with supernovae (SNe) are possibly born out of the death of a massive star. After the star collapses, a stellar-mass black hole (BH) is formed, ...surrounded by a hyperaccretion disk with outflows. Blandford-Znajek jets can be launched and then break out from the envelope to power LGRBs. The jet luminosity depends on the net inflow accretion rate at the inner radius of the disk. Furthermore, 56Ni synthesis should occur in the strong outflows from the accretion disk. The decay of 56Ni is considered to be the possible origin of SN bumps in the subsequent optical afterglows of LGRBs. If 56Ni originates entirely from the outflows, there is competition between the luminosities of LGRBs and those of the corresponding 56Ni bumps because of the material distribution between the disk inflows and outflows. In this paper, we investigated these two luminosities based on 15 cases of LGRB-SN in the framework of the BH hyperaccretion inflow-outflow model. Then, one can constrain the characteristics of the progenitor stars of these LGRBs. The results indicate that these LGRBs may originate from the low-metallicity ( , where Z and Z are the metallicities of the stars and the Sun, respectively) stars or some massive solar-metallicity stars. For ultra-LGRBs (ULGRBs), such as GRB 111209A, most of the massive low-metallicity stars with could be progenitors only if very strong outflows are launched from the disks. When the contributions of nucleosynthesis in the disk outflows are considered, there is no shortage of 56Ni mass for luminous SNe associated with ULGRBs.
Skeletal myoblast transplantation seems a promising approach for the repair of myocardial infarction (MI). However, the low engraftment efficacy and impaired angiogenic ability limit the clinical ...efficiency of the myoblasts. Gene engineering with angiogenic growth factors promotes angiogenesis and enhances engraftment of transplanted skeletal myoblasts, leading to improved infarction recovery in myocardial ischemia. The present study evaluated the therapeutic effects of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) gene-engineered skeletal myoblasts on tissue regeneration and restoration of heart function in a rat MI model.
The skeletal myoblasts were isolated, expanded, and transduced with adenovirus carrying the HGF gene (Ad-HGF). Male SD rats underwent ligation of the left anterior descending coronary artery. After 2 weeks, the surviving rats were randomized into four groups and treated with skeletal myoblasts by direct injection into the myocardium. The survival and engraftment of skeletal myoblasts were determined by real-time PCR and in situ hybridization. The cardiac function with hemodynamic index and left ventricular architecture were monitored; The adenovirus-mediated-HGF gene transfection increases the HGF expression and promotes the proliferation of skeletal myoblasts in vitro. Transplantation of HGF-engineered skeletal myoblasts results in reduced infarct size and collagen deposition, increased vessel density, and improved cardiac function in a rat MI model. HGF gene modification also increases the myocardial levels of HGF, VEGF, and Bcl-2 and enhances the survival and engraftment of skeletal myoblasts.
HGF engineering improves the regenerative effect of skeletal myoblasts on MI by enhancing their survival and engraftment ability.
Chronic inflammation induced by persistent microbial infection plays an essential role in tumor progression. Although it is well documented that Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection is closely ...associated with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), how EBV-induced inflammation promotes NPC progression remains largely unknown. Here, we report that tumor infiltration of tumor-associated macrophages (TAM) and expression of CCL18, the cytokine preferentially secreted by TAM, closely correlate with serum EBV infection titers and tumor progression in two cohorts of NPC patients.
compared with EBV
NPC cell lines, EBV
NPC cell lines exhibited superior capacity to attract monocytes and skew them to differentiate to a TAM-like phenotype. Cytokine profiling analysis revealed that NPC cells with active EBV replications recruited monocytes by VEGF and induced TAM by GM-CSF in an NF-κB-dependent manner. Reciprocally, TAM induced epithelial-mesenchymal transition and furthered NF-κB activation of tumor cells by CCL18. In humanized mice, NPC cells with active EBV replications exhibited increased metastasis, and neutralization of CCL18, GM-CSF, and VEGF significantly reduced metastasis. Collectively, our work defines a feed-forward loop between tumor cells and macrophages in NPC, which shows how metastatic potential can evolve concurrently with virus-induced chronic inflammation.

•Radscore could be a significant predictor of SLN metastasis in invasive breast cancer.•Good performance of MSKCC nomogram for predicting SLN metastasis in invasive breast cancer.•The combination of ...radscore and MSKCC nomogram was significantly better than the MSKCC nomogram alone.
To develop a combined nomogram by incorporating the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) nomogram and ultrasound (US)-based radiomics score (Radscore) for predicting sentinel lymph node (SLN) metastasis in invasive breast cancer.
This retrospective study was approved by the ethics committee of our institution, and written informed consent was waived. A total of 452 patients with invasive breast cancer who received SLN Biopsy in a single center were included between January 2016 and December 2019. The patients were divided into a training set (n = 318) and a validation set (n = 134). A total of 1216 features were extracted from the regions of interest (ROIs) of the tumors on conventional ultrasound. The maximum relevance minimum redundancy (mRMR) and the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) algorithm were used to build the Radscore. Afterward, the diagnostic performance was assessed and validated. Comparison of receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and decision curve analysis (DCA) were performed to evaluate the incremental value of the combined model.
Obtained from 18 features, the Radscore indicated a favorable discriminatory capability in the training set with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.834, whereas a value of 0.770 was observed in the validation set. The AUC of the combined model was 0.901 (95 % confidence interval (95 % CI): 0.865−0.938) in the training set and 0.833 (95 % CI: 0.788−0.878) in the validation set. Both of them were superior to MSKCC or imaging Radscore alone (P < 0.05). DCA demonstrated that the combined model was superior to the others in terms of clinical practicability.
Preoperative US-based Radscore can improve the accuracy of clinical MSKCC nomogram for SLN metastasis prediction in breast cancer.
