The Alt-Right increased its national profile during the 2016 presidential election based on its support of Donald Trump. This research becomes more salient with the media continuing to face similar ...challenges in framing far-right groups. The Alt-Right, like other Far Right groups worldwide, has moderated their framing to hide racist ideology. Therefore, the challenge of this article is to learn if the media allow newer far-right conservative groups to self-frame even against the advice from the Associated Press. This study uses qualitative framing analysis through grounded theory to review the coverage of the Alt-Right as a manner of examining if the group was successful in advancing its desired frames into mainstream media coverage. The results of this study suggest overall the Alt-Right was successful in reducing a direct discussion about the racist beliefs of the group within press coverage. This study continues in the tradition of framing studies of the past yet moves the genre forward as journalists negotiate increasing polarised and fragmented political communication.
Community media maintain a tradition of interaction, yet, few studies focus on digital operations at smaller publications. This study indicates direct communication matters more than technology to ...generating interaction advancing interactivity theory. This project further suggests no single technological element likely increases the amount of interaction on the websites of community newspapers and multiple forms of digital outreach could improve the likelihood of success. However, website managers appear indifferent to communicating with the audience online.
Studies of podcasting and digital audio streaming have neglected text-based podcast descriptions and episode titles, the most outward-facing content on any podcast. Qualitative analysis of text-based ...podcast content found mainstream news podcasts assembled show and episode descriptions using traditional values of brevity, directness and objectivity. Conservative podcasts assembled their text-based content with the same values - rarely mentioning conservative ideology or affiliation directly, and often appearing indistinguishable from mainstream news podcasts. Distinctions appeared in the use of incivil or irreverent language. Findings indicate a dynamic assemblage process on a growing digital platform.
Social media sites such as Facebook allow for the easy extension and support of imagined community within online spaces. This study seeks to examine the role of imagined community and framing in ...portrayals of Islam and Muslims within the comments of public media pages on Facebook. A comparative analysis of comments on news articles from conservative, mainstream, and liberal media sources was conducted to understand the quantity and content of Islamophobic comments on these pages. Comments on eight of the most popular conservative Facebook pages (seven news sites and that of President Donald Trump) were analyzed, and an online rating system was used to consider how far right a source is considered. Both the qualitative and quantitative data suggest imagined community exists within commenters on conservative media Facebook pages, particularly those rated further on the political right, reinforcing the use of Islamophobic rhetoric.
This study reviews diffusion of video and video advertising on the Web sites of 400 community news outlets in the United States. Results suggest that while a significant number of community news ...outlets publish editorial videos online, video advertising lags behind larger publications. The study argues that elements such as circulation and size of a media corporation have little influence on the development and use of video and video advertising on community media Web sites in the U.S.
The Web 2.0 era increasingly relies on submissions of content from non-professionals and interaction between the masses. Community newspapers work within a changing media market and one where the ...audience moves to digital consumption while economics greatly favor print. This study seeks to examine how community newspaper websites choose to engage in gatekeeping as it relates to user-generated content. It also seeks to learn the manner in which those who operate these sites interact with the public. This dissertation uses two content analyses to separately gauge the publication of UGC and interaction on community newspaper websites. Furthermore, the researcher seeks through survey to learn the attitudes of those who operate community newspaper websites toward both the publication of UGC and where they believed it was important to interact with the public. The study suggests there may be no easy answers in terms of technology for getting the public to contribute UGC. Simply making multiple requests for contributions, providing numerous manners for the public to submit, or even offering a special location on the web for all submitted content does not seem enough to convince the public to contribute more content. However, this dissertation indicated direct interaction does appear to increase the number of comments a site receives and the attitudes of managers UGC and interactivity also may influence public actions in terms of participation.
Not everyone agrees with Brown that any type of tariffs against South Korean steel producers will have a long-term positive impact on the U.S. steel industry.
...the lack of a water-based shipping method here put it at a disadvantage to steel producers in Cleveland and northwest Indiana, said Chuck Stevens, retired dean of the department of engineering at ...YSU. After the war through the Marshall Plan, the new equipment for steel production made in the U.S. was sent to Japan and European countries to help them rebuild. Because they didn't have any expertise, it was better to have older equipment and expertise," Suchora added.
