This work investigates the possibilities of improving the measurements of arrival time difference of the two 511
keV photons arising from annihilation of a positron in positron emission tomography ...(PET). The new technique of detecting the prompt Cherenkov light, produced by absorption of the annihilation photon in a suitable crystal, could considerably improve the image quality. A simple apparatus with PbF
2 crystals and microchannel plate photomultipliers (MCP PMTs) has been constructed and coincidence resolutions of 71
ps FWHM and 95
ps FWHM have been achieved with 5 and 15
mm thick crystals, respectively. Simulation calculations are in agreement with the experimental findings.

An apparatus, consisting of two PbF2 crystals, each coupled to a multichannel plate photomultiplier (MCP-PMT), has been constructed in order to measure the time-of-flight (TOF) of the two 511keV ...annihilation photons produced in positron emission tomography (PET). Excellent timing is achieved by detecting the prompt Cherenkov photons produced by the absorption of the 511keV gamma photons. The present work describes the measurement and image reconstruction of two 22Na point sources. In addition, the influence of the radiator thickness and the Cherenkov light absorption cut-off of the crystal on the efficiency and the timing resolution have been studied by Monte Carlo simulation.

We report about on-the-bench studies of Photonis multi anode micro-channel plate (MCP) PMTs, as candidate photodetectors for the aerogel RICH counter of the Belle II spectrometer. This photosensor is ...fast enough to be used also as a time-of-flight counter, which would complement the kinematic range of the aerogel RICH counter.
Silicon photomultipliers, whose main advantage over conventional photomultiplier tubes is the operation in high magnetic fields, have been considered as position sensitive, single photon detectors in ...a proximity focusing RICH with aerogel radiator. A module, consisting of 64 (8×8) Hamamatsu MPPC S10362-11-100P silicon photomultipliers, has been constructed and tested with Cherenkov photons emitted in an aerogel radiator by 120
GeV/
c pions from the CERN T4-H6 beam. In order to increase the efficiency, i.e. the effective surface on which light is detected, the potential of using light guides has been investigated.

An upgrade of the particle identification system of the Belle detector is envisaged. In the search for an optimal photon detector, the performance of the Burle 85011 64-anode, multichannel plate PMT ...has been tested. The Cherenkov angle resolution and photon yield have been measured with pion beams at KEK, while the position and incident angle dependence of surface sensitivity have been measured on the bench.

A 2:1 reducing two-lens telescope in front of each photomultiplier tube increases the sensitive area at the expense of increased pixel size, resulting in a contribution to the resolution which roughly matches that of dispersion. The counter was completed in January of 1999, and its performance has been steady and reliable over the years it has been in operation. The design performance of the Ring Imaging Cherenkov counter was fully reached: the average number of detected photons in the RICH for a

A proximity focusing ring imaging Cherenkov detector with multiple aerogel radiator layers is studied. In situations where limited space is available and a compact RICH detector is required, the use ...of a nonhomogeneous, multiple refractive index radiator offers a possibility for improving the resolution. Experimental investigations of the relevant parameters, i.e. single photon Cherenkov angle uncertainty and number of detected photons per ring, are presented for different aerogel radiator configurations. The results are promising and appear to satisfy the requirements for the forthcoming upgrade of the particle identification system of the Belle detector.
The resolution of time-of-flight measurements is usually limited by the decay time constant of the scintillating material used. If Cherenkov photons, which are produced promptly, could be used to ...measure the time-of-flight, the limiting factor would become the photo detector. The excellent time resolution of the microchannel plate photomultiplier (MCP PMT) lead us to consider the possibility of performing such time-of-flight measurements for pairs of annihilation 511 keV photons, which are used in positron emission tomography (PET) for source distribution reconstruction. In this work we present simulation and experimental results, obtained with a simple back-to-back detector, using PbF 2 or PWO crystal as Cherenkov radiator and Hamamatsu MCP PMT as a photo detector.
