Purpose - This study aims to identify the extent to which different motivational elements can support strong bonds and good cooperation between front-line employees and hotels’ leadership in times of ...crisis and work suspension. Design - The views of a sample of employees working in 4 and 5 star hotels in Heraklion Prefecture were studied in May 2020, when hotel operations were suspended. Methodology - Two hundred and one completed questionnaires were collected, consisting of 31 six-point Likert scales, whose data were analysed using the Exploratory and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA). Approach - The Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) followed the principal component method of extraction based on a varimax rotation, while the CFA adοpted the method of Structural Equation Modeling, that was based on the maximum likelihood method of estimation. Results - In times of crisis, front-line employees of hotels consider that the creation of strong bonds and a good spirit of cooperation and communication between them and the leadership of the hotels is strongly based on the exploitation of their skills and the developmental opportunities offered. Originality of the research - The research identified motivational factors that can support the creation of strong bonds and a good spirit of cooperation and communication between front-line employees and hotel management in times of crisis. On a practical level, the findings can help hotel managers gain strategic advantage and experience for the future, should they need to deal with similar situations.
This paper deals with the building and managing of corporate reputation of 4 and 5 star hotels in Athens-Attica, as well as with the role of leadership in corporate reputation. A primary research in ...hotel firms in Athens-Attica helped identify i) to which extent a charismatic leadership and the skills of a leader positively affect the reputation of hotels, and ii) to which extent a charismatic leadership is related to the leader’s skills. The statistical analysis of the research results revealed on the one hand a number of positive correlations between the factors and variables examined and on the other hand some not particularly strong correlations between their sub-factors, thus allowing both reaching conclusions and making suggestions for further research.
This paper investigates the impacts of the 2015 refugee crisis on the hotel industry on four islands in Greece (Lesbos, Kos, Chios and Samos) and hoteliers’ responses to it. The sample includes 96 ...accommodation establishments. Findings revealed that the refugee crisis had a very serious negative impact on the hotel industry of the analysed islands and their operational statistics deteriorated significantly. The image of the islands and of the accommodation establishments were hurt as well. The hoteliers preferred to mitigate the negative consequences of the refugee crisis mostly by increased marketing efforts to attract more guests, and cutting costs and prices, rather than by working with fewer employees, delaying payments to suppliers or requiring more cash payments. Managerial implications, limitations and future research direction are also discussed.
•The impacts of the 2015 refugee crisis on the hotel industry in Greece are analysed.•The sample includes 96 properties from Lesbos, Kos, Chios and Samos islands.•Operational statistics of the accommodation establishments deteriorated.•The tourist image of the properties and the islands worsened.•Hoteliers cope by increased marketing efforts, cutting prices and costs.
The objective of this research was to identify and examine the factors affecting Greek hotel employees' perception and attitudes toward empowerment. To achieve the aforementioned objective primary ...research was conducted among the employees of a big hotel group. Factor analysis was applied to determine a principal factor and its main components, thus allowing the measurement of human resources attitude and perception toward empowerment. At the next stage, the said factor was checked as to its correlation on the one hand with the sense of the employees about their jobs and on the other hand with the satisfaction they draw from them.
This article aims to explore the impact of a hotel's reward system on strengthening: positive relationships and communication among employees; the creation of a change-friendly organizational climate ...and cultural change barriers, within the context of a cultural change process in a
hotel. Quantitative data were collected from a proportionally stratified, representative sample of 207 Greek five-star hotels' senior executives and analyzed with the principal component method of extraction and structural equation modeling. This led to the creation and validation of three
prototype second-order latent variable models, which highlight and depict the impact of individual variables and their importance for a reward system creating an organizational climate for or against cultural change in hotels. The originality of the article lays on both theoretical and practical
levels. On a theoretical level, the article's findings manage to fill a knowledge gap through a novel modeling of a reward system on a hotel's organizational climate in times of cultural change. On a practical level, the article findings enable hotels' executives to focus on specific variables
of a reward system that can enhance and/or prevent a cultural change initiative.
The present manuscript studies and classifies the different performance variables and measures of hotels, recorded in international scientific journals. Through the Content Analysis of 79 scientific ...papers, this manuscript reaches a main conclusion regarding hotel performance indicators measurement. Although researchers have acknowledged that the concept of hotel performance is complex and manifold (and as such it is depicted and assessed with various and diverse indicators and groups of indicators in international scientific literature), still the majority of them measure hotel performance in a way that does not express its multidimensional nature in their studies as they focus on a relatively small number of the above indicators. This paper mainly contributes to further classifying hotel performance indicators and introduces a novel codification that allows researchers to better understand indicators and hotel executives to use them more effectively.
Small accommodation businesses dominate the rural hospitality industry, producing simple or complex tourist products and services in order to be sustainable and competitive. In this paper, a ...two-stage data envelopment analysis (DEA) model was applied in a representative sample of 151 small accommodation businesses in non-coastal areas in the region of Central Macedonia in Greece. In the first stage, DEA-bootstrapping is applied to estimate point and interval efficiency ratios of accommodation businesses and identify the benchmark accommodations. The double bootstrapping truncated procedure of Simar and Wilson is implemented in the second stage to investigate the role of five business factors in terms of efficiency. The findings suggest that small accommodation businesses, although they are based in areas where tourist resources abound, are inefficient. Moreover, the results of the truncated regression method showed that the business’s size, the operating days, and the variety of activities (simple/complex) affect business’s inefficiency. On the contrary, the business’s age and their engagement in agriculture or not do not affect business’s efficiency. The results are important for rural entrepreneurs and policy makers, and they will also be useful for the adaptation of businesses to increase their efficiency.
In the present article researchers feature the examination of the opinions and attitudes of the residents of Chios island in Greece. It is based on the investigation of both the characteristics ...(quality, potential, organization) of the island's main annual cultural events (Rocket War,
Agas, and Mostra) and their possible impact on the local society, economy, tourism, and natural environment. Cluster analysis was used to classify the residents under three groups: Embracers, Realists, Neutrals. Each group has particular characteristics and a clearly defined opinion about
local cultural tourism events and their impact on a local level. According to the main findings of the primary research some particularly interesting aspects of the effects of local cultural tourism events both on the local level and on the island's tourism development emerge. The conclusions
drawn from the elaboration of such findings afford an opportunity to understand better the general impact of cultural events and by the same token to assist government bodies, residents, and other stakeholders in maximizing benefits, whenever possible.
Employee turnover rates in the tourism industry are globally considerably high. Research on the topic has focused mostly on environmental and situational factors, with little attention given to ...employees’ different characteristic. In the current research the effect of the Big Five personality traits and commitment on turnover intentions of lodging employees was examined. The effect of personality on commitment was examined, as well. Utilizing structural equation modelling (SEM), emotional stability and organizational commitment were found to be predictors of turnover intentional behaviour. An additional impact of occupation commitment-related variables on the prediction of organizational commitment was observed. Finally, conscientiousness was found to be the best predictor of organizational commitment. The implications of these results for future research are discussed, as well.
