To promote understanding of and interest in working with data among diverse student populations, we developed and studied a high school mathematics curriculum module that examines income inequality ...in the United States. Designed as a multi-week set of applied data investigations, the module supports student analyses of income inequality using U.S. Census Bureau microdata and the online data analysis tool the Common Online Data Analysis Platform (CODAP). Pre- and post-module data show that use of this module was associated with statistically significant growth in students' understanding of fundamental data concepts and individual interests in statistics and data analysis, with small to moderate effect sizes. Student survey responses and interview data from students and teachers suggest that the topic of income inequality, features within CODAP, the use of person-level data, and opportunities to engage in multivariable thinking helped to support critical data literacy and its foundations among participating students. We describe our definitions of data literacy and critical data literacy and discuss curriculum strategies to develop them.

Theater and the church have been at odds throughout history. This conflict has led to alienation and judgment of artists by the church and limited creative opportunities for the church to be a public ...witness in culture. Connecting with theater allows the church a chance to engage those most marginalized from church, shape disciples and create a unique public theology to share God’s justice, equity and love. Scripture and theology are inherently dramatic. Sacred text is the progressive, story of a relationship between the Creator and the created. Both Old and New Testament are filled with dramatic moments that testify to God’s story of love. Consider the New Testament gospel stories of Jesus. From the Incarnation, baptism, a public ministry of miracles and preaching, a processional entry into Jerusalem that leads to death on a cross and resurrection, each story is a theatrical moment that reveals the nature of God. Theatrical theology tells the story of God as writer, Son as hero and Holy Spirit as director seeking to partner with the supporting characters of humanity throughout time. This project explores theatrical theology as a vehicle for the church to shape disciples who take their place alongside the Divine Trinity on stage as public theologians and participate in social resistance within a community. This project is written in two acts. Act I is the history of theater and the church, the background of theatrical theology and its praxis. Act II is the case study of a large, mainline denominational church in Florida. ACT II breaks the fourth wall with the spectator (reader) through digital media embedded in the writing. During the High Middle Ages, the city of Verona in Northern Italy stood at the geographic, political, and social crossroads of imperial and papal power. However, during the first half of the ...thirteenth century, Lord Ezzelino da Romano’s affiliation with the Holy Roman Emperor, Frederick II, put the city at odds with the Church. Ezzelino’s support of imperial interests in the region at the expense of the papacy, as well as his persecution of large numbers of the laity and clergy alike resulted in him being declared an excommunicate for most of the years between 1225 and 1260. Papal condemnation fell most heavily upon the shoulders of Frederick II and his sympathizer, Ezzelino, but the papal bulls lay interdict and threatened excommunication upon all the citizens living within the region. Events culminated in Pope Innocent IV issuing an interdict against the city in 1249 and his successor Alexander IV declaring a crusade against the heretics of Verona in 1254. As a result of the interdict, parish churches closed their doors, their bells fell silent, and the clergy ceased to dispense the sacraments that had long been an essential component of life in the Christianized west of the Middle Ages. It is such uncertainty that often drives souls to seek spiritual comfort, and yet the official channels of the Church, the most widely acknowledged conduits to God at the time, were obstructed by both papal and political actions. How did the citizens of Verona respond? Much has been written about the imperial papal contest in Italy, but this dissertation is not, at its heart, another Guelf-Ghibelline investigation, rather it examines a variety of contemporary sources including, wills, donations and letters, to explore how the struggle between sacred and secular powers influenced popular religious life in the city of Verona.
