Upgrades to the LHCb computing infrastructure in the first long shutdown of the LHC have allowed for high quality decay information to be calculated by the software trigger making a separate offline ...event reconstruction unnecessary. Furthermore, the storage space of the triggered candidate is an order of magnitude smaller than the entire raw event that would otherwise need to be persisted. Tesla is an application designed to process the information calculated by the trigger, with the resulting output used to directly perform physics measurements.

SHiP is a proposed general purpose fixed target experiment to be located at the CERN SPS accelerator. A fixed target station will be followed by magnetic shielding to reduce beam induced background, ...a dedicated tau neutrino detector and a detector to search for hidden particles beyond the Standard Model. Background taggers and a dedicated timing detector will ensure sufficient background rejection. The timing detector is required to have a timing resolution of 100 ps or less in order to reduce combinatorial di-muon background to an acceptable level. A proposed option for such a timing detector consists of plastic scintillating bars read out on each end by silicon photomultipliers, which is the focus of this study. We report on recent testbeam results carried out at CERN on single bars read out by an array of silicon photomultipliers and present a design for a prototype of the SHiP timing detector.

Two methods for the measurement of the uniformity of the refractive index
n
within a single block of silica aerogel are described. One is based on the deflection of a laser beam induced by transverse ...index gradients. The second exploits the Cherenkov effect, measuring the emission angle of photons radiated by 500
MeV electrons traversing the aerogel. The beam can scan the full aerogel surface providing information on point to point variations of
n
.
The measurement of the dispersion law
n
(
λ
)
is also reported. An Xe lamp coupled to a diffraction grating provides the monochromatic source. The index for each
λ
is measured by the prism method at a corner of an aerogel sample. A Sellmeier functional form for
n
(
λ
)
is assumed, and the parameters best fitting the experimental data are given.

This paper presents measurements of the refractive index of a hygroscopic silica aerogel block at several wavelengths. The measurements, performed with a monochromator, have been compared with ...different parameterisations for n(λ), in order to determine the best chromaticity law for the aerogel. This is an important input for design and operation of RICH detectors with silica aerogel radiator.

This paper presents results on the radiation hardness of the LHCb Outer Tracker (OT) during LHC operation in 2010 and 2011. Modules of the OT have shown to suffer from ageing effects that lead to ...gain loss, after irradiation in the laboratory. Under irradiation at moderate intensities an insulating layer is formed on the anode wire of the OT straw cells. This ageing effect is caused by contamination of the counting gas due to outgassing of the glue used in the construction of the OT modules. Two methods to monitor gain stability in the OT are presented: module scans with radioactive sources and the study of hit efficiency as a function of amplifier threshold. No gain loss is observed after receiving 1.3fb−1 of integrated luminosity corresponding to an integrated charge of 0.055C/cm in the hottest spot of the detector.

The LHCb Outer Tracker straw tubes have shown to suffer from gain loss after irradiation in the laboratory at moderate intensities. Under irradiation an insulating layer is formed on the anode wire. ...The ageing is caused by contamination of the counting gas due to outgassing of the plastifier di-isopropyl-naphthalene in araldite AY103-1 used at construction. This paper presents irradiation results with and without the plastifier, together with the mass spectra of the glue samples. In addition, the effects of wire heating and large currents are presented.
The LHCb Outer Tracker (OT) detector has shown to suffer from gain loss after irradiation in the laboratory at moderate intensities. Under irradiation an insulating layer is formed on the anode wire. ...The ageing is caused by contamination of the counting gas due to outgassing of the glue used in construction namely araldite AY103-1. The gain loss is concentrated upstream the gas flow, and at moderate irradiation intensity only. The ageing rate is reduced by longterm flushing and by the addition of a few percent of
O

to the gas mixture. Furthermore, applying a large positive high voltage (beyond the amplification regime) removes the insulating deposits without damaging the wire surface. This paper presents both the characteristics of the ageing phenomenon and the beneficial treatments.
