The cell nucleus can be thought of as a complex, dynamic, living material, which functions to organize and protect the genome and coordinate gene expression. These functions are achieved via ...intricate mechanical and biochemical interactions among its myriad components, including the nuclear lamina, nuclear bodies, and the chromatin itself. While the biophysical organization of the nuclear lamina and chromatin have been thoroughly studied, the concept that liquid–liquid phase separation and related phase transitions play a role in establishing nuclear structure has emerged only recently. Phase transitions are likely to be intimately coupled to the mechanobiology of structural elements in the nucleus, but their interplay with one another is still not understood. Here, we review recent developments on the role of phase separation and mechanics in nuclear organization and discuss the functional implications in cell physiology and disease states.
A surprisingly simple and rapid methodology for large-area, lightweight, and thin laminate coatings with remarkable moisture barrier properties is introduced. Commercially available paperboards are ...coated with thin layers of nanocellulose. The nanocellulose coating induces a surface smoothening effect on the coated sheets as characterized by environmental scanning electron microscopy and white light interferometry. A moisture-protective layer of renewable alkyd resins is deposited on the nanocellulose precoated sheets using a water-borne dispersion coating process or lithographic printing. Through an auto-oxidation process, the applied alkyd resins are transformed into moisture sealant layers. The moisture barrier properties are characterized in detail by water vapor permeability measurements at different levels of relative humidity. The water vapor barrier properties of the nanocellulose precoated substrates were significantly improved by thin layers of renewable alkyd resins. The effect of the alkyd resin properties, coating technologies, and base paper substrates on the final barrier performance of the sheets were studied. It was found that the nanocellulose coating had a notable effect on the homogeneity and barrier performance of the alkyd resin layers and in particular those alkyd resin layers that were applied by printing. The concept is environmentally friendly, energy-efficient, and economic and is ready for scaling-up via continuous roll-to-roll processes. Large-scale renewable coatings applicable for sustainable packaging solutions are foreseen.
We report on the observation of anisotropy in the arrival direction distribution of cosmic rays at PeV energies. The analysis is based on data taken between 2009 and 2012 with the IceTop air shower ...array at the south pole. IceTop, an integral part of the IceCube detector, is sensitive to cosmic rays between 100 TeV and 1 EeV. With the current size of the IceTop data set, searches for anisotropy at the 10 super(-3) level can, for the first time, be extended to PeV energies. We divide the data set into two parts with median energies of 400 TeV and 2 PeV, respectively. In the low energy band, we observe a strong deficit with an angular size of about 30degrees and an amplitude of (-1.58 + or - 0.46 sub(stat) + or - 0.52 sub(sys)) x 10 super(-3) at a location consistent with previous observations of cosmic rays with the IceCube neutrino detector. The study of the high energy band shows that the anisotropy persists to PeV energies and increases in amplitude to (-3.11 + or - 0.38 sub(stat) + or - 0.96 sub(sys)) x 10 super(-3).
We have investigated galaxies around NGC 6251 to search for an associated group. Our main goal is to study the environment around the giant radio galaxy to better understand the reasons for its size ...and structure. To this end, we have made spectroscopic observations with the 2.16-m optical telescope at Xinglong Station of the National Astronomical Observatories of China (NAOC) and obtained spectra of 45 objects (including four likely stars). The redshifts give us 10 new galaxies in a group, which are in addition to seven previously known members. The 17 galaxies' positions are compared with the radio emission. The optical velocity dispersion of group members within 0.7 Mpc of NGC 6251 is not consistent with that expected from correlation curves of X-ray luminosity L
x versus velocity dispersion σ
r
. We briefly discuss this result, suggesting that in the NGC 6251 group, the density of X-ray emitting gas is unusually low, and this is the main reason for the size of the radio source.
Context. Ultra-high energy (UHE) neutrinos and cosmic rays initiate particle cascades underneath the Moon's surface. These cascades have a negative charge excess and radiate Cherenkov radio emission ...in a process known as the Askaryan effect. The optimal frequency window for observation of these pulses with radio telescopes on the Earth is around 150 MHz. Aims. By observing the Moon with the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope array we are able to set a new limit on the UHE neutrino flux. Methods. The PuMa II backend is used to monitor the Moon in 4 frequency bands between 113 and 175 MHz with a sampling frequency of 40 MHz. The narrowband radio interference is digitally filtered out and the dispersive effect of the Earth's ionosphere is compensated for. A trigger system is implemented to search for short pulses. By inserting simulated pulses in the raw data, the detection efficiency for pulses of various strength is calculated. Results. With 47.6 hours of observation time, we are able to set a limit on the UHE neutrino flux. This new limit is an order of magnitude lower than existing limits. In the near future, the digital radio array LOFAR will be used to achieve an even lower limit.
In this paper we report the first observation in the Southern hemisphere of an energy dependence in the Galactic cosmic-ray anisotropy up to a few hundred TeV. This measurement was performed using ...cosmic-ray-induced muons recorded by the partially deployed IceCube observatory between 2009 May and 2010 May. The data include a total of 33 x 10 super(9) muon events with a median angular resolution of ~3degrees. A sky map of the relative intensity in arrival direction over the Southern celestial sky is presented for cosmic-ray median energies of 20 and 400 TeV. The same large-scale anisotropy observed at median energies around 20 TeV is not present at 400 TeV. Instead, the high-energy sky map shows a different anisotropy structure including a deficit with a post-trial significance of -6.3sigma. This anisotropy reveals a new feature of the Galactic cosmic-ray distribution, which must be incorporated into theories of the origin and propagation of cosmic rays.
Abstract
We present a detailed single-pulse analysis for PSR B1929+10 based on observations with the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). The main pulse (MP) and interpulse ...(IP) are found to be modulated with a periodicity of ∼12 times the pulsar’s rotational period (
P
). The ∼12
P
modulation is confirmed as a periodic amplitude modulation instead of systematic drifting. The periodic amplitude modulation in the IP is found to be anti-correlated with that in the weak preceding component of the MP (MP_
i
), but correlated with that in the first two components of the MP (MP_
ii
), which implies that the modulation patterns in the IP and the MP are phase-locked. What is more interesting is that the modulation in MP_
ii
is delayed from that in the IP by about 1
P
. Furthermore, high-sensitivity observations by FAST reveal that weak emission exists between the MP and the IP. In addition, we confirm that the separation between the IP and the MP is independent of radio frequency. The above results are a conundrum for pulsar theories and cannot be satisfactorily explained by the current pulsar models. Therefore, our results observed with FAST provide an opportunity to probe the structure of pulsar emission and the neutron star’s magnetosphere.
Flint, MI experienced two outbreaks of Legionnaires’ Disease (LD) during the summers of 2014 and 2015, coinciding with use of Flint River as a drinking water source without corrosion control. Using ...simulated distribution systems (SDSs) followed by stagnant simulated premise (i.e., building) plumbing reactors (SPPRs) containing cross-linked polyethylene (PEX) or copper pipe, we reproduced trends in water chemistry and Legionella proliferation observed in the field when Flint River versus Detroit water were used before, during, and after the outbreak. Specifically, due to high chlorine demand in the SDSs, SPPRs with treated Flint River water were chlorine deficient and had elevated L. pneumophila numbers in the PEX condition. SPPRs with Detroit water, which had lower chlorine demand and higher residual chlorine, lost all culturable L. pneumophila within two months. L. pneumophila also diminished more rapidly with time in Flint River SPPRs with copper pipe, presumably due to the bacteriostatic properties of elevated copper concentrations caused by lack of corrosion control and stagnation. This study confirms hypothesized mechanisms by which the switch in water chemistry, pipe materials, and different flow patterns in Flint premise plumbing may have contributed to observed LD outbreak patterns.

We have investigated the environment of the giant radio galaxy NGC 315 with its associated group of galaxies selected by their spectroscopic redshifts. Observations were made with the 2.16-m optical ...telescope at Xinglong Station of the National Astronomical Observatories of China. In addition to 25 galaxies near NGC 315 with published redshifts, we have successfully determined 21 new redshifts of candidates, five of which are previously unknown members of the NGC 315 galaxy group. We examine and discuss the spatial structure and kinematics of this group (which is part of the Perseus-Pisces filament). Nearly 40 per cent of its members are concentrated near NGC 315, close to the emission from its brighter radio jet. The X-ray luminosity implied by the optical velocity dispersion is higher than that derived empirically from observations of other groups, suggesting that X-ray-emitting gas within the NGC 315 group has a low density. This may be one reason for the size of the radio source.
Objectives
The aim of this retrospective case-control study was to report the efficacy of subcutaneous triamcinolone as part of a regimen for feline eosinophilic keratoconjunctivitis (FEK).
Methods
...Records and clinical photographs were reviewed and lesions semiquantitatively graded for cats with cytologically confirmed FEK. Clinical data were compared between a study population of nine cats (11 eyes) treated with, and a reference population of seven cats (eight eyes) treated without, a median of 0.11 mg/kg (range 0.10–0.20 mg/kg) of triamcinolone acetonide subcutaneously.
Results
Breed, sex, age and prevalence of corneal ulceration at presentation; corneal disease severity before and at the initiation of immunomodulation; and duration of antiviral treatment before immunomodulation did not differ significantly between populations (P ⩾0.059). Corneal plaques resolved in five cats each from the study and reference populations (P = 0.366). Median (range) time from immunomodulation to corneal plaque resolution did not significantly differ (P = 0.246) between the study (median 14 days; range 8–38 days) and reference (median 28 days, range 14–46 days) populations. No adverse reactions were attributed to triamcinolone administration, and all corneal ulcers in the study population re-epithelialized within 14 days (range 8–38 days) following triamcinolone injection. Time to corneal ulcer re-epithelialization following triamcinolone injection varied minimally in those receiving antivirals prior to (8 or 30 days until re-epithelialization), simultaneously with (38 days) or after (14 or 24 days) triamcinolone.
Conclusions and relevance
In otherwise healthy cats with FEK, subcutaneous administration of triamcinolone appears to be well tolerated and as efficacious as conventional topical immunomodulatory therapies. It may be especially useful in ulcerated eyes where topical immunomodulation is contraindicated.
