Identified 68 potentially gifted children (aged 4-8) from minority and low-income backgrounds for participation in a summer institute. Instruction for the students was complemented by a learning ...component for their parents. Describes the results of a Parent as Teacher Inventory, comparing Hispanic and Anglo parents. Outlines the parent curriculum. (KS)
The surface morphology and optical properties of Mercury resemble those of the moon in remarkable detail and record a very similar sequence of events. Chemical and mineralogical similarity of the ...outer layers of Mercury and the moon is implied; Mercury is probably a differentiated planet with a large iron-rich core. Differentiation is inferred to have occurred very early. No evidence of atmospheric modification of landforms has been found. Large-scale scarps and ridges unlike lunar or martian features may reflect a unique period of planetary compression near the end of heavy bombardment by small planetesimals.
We report on the design and prototype implementation of the SMILE system. SMILE (Smart Middleware Light Ends) extends the Gryphon publish-subscribe system with stateful subscriptions and computing ...capabilities, with the goal of raising the abstraction level of messaging middleware programming closer to that of database programming. It allows subscriptions to relational views (which can involve aggregation, joins, and other transforms) derived from published event streams. The SMILE system has dual autonomic properties: it can be used to augment other system with monitoring capabilities and make them more autonomic; and the system itself has sophisticated capabilities for self-optimization, deployment and automated fault-tolerance.
The variations of optical density and fluorescence of lucensomycin are good indices of the binding of this polyenic antibiotic to membranes. The former parameter reflects more generally the binding ...to any site present in the membrane, while the latter is more specific for binding to cholesterol. The chromophore of the lucensomycin-cholesterol complex has a relatively long lifetime, is almost immobile in the membrane, and is not accessible to water-soluble fluorescence-quenching agents. The stoichiometry, evaluated fluorometrically, corresponds to about two cholesterol molecules per polyene. In colloidal cholesterol suspensions, the extent of binding as a function of free polyene concentration is described by rectangular hyperbolae, the dissociation constant being, however, dependent on the sterol concentration. In erythrocyte membranes, on the other hand, and even more markedly in model systems containing appropriate solvents, the combination between lucensomycin and the sterol sites is described by sigmoid titration curves, indicative of cooperative effects, and probably due to solvation of cholesterol.
After attending 12 classes, 210 grandparents with 1 son/daughter and 1 grandchild evaluated changes in grandparent behavior and attitudes. Compared to a control group of 185, the participants showed ...significant improvement. Classes covered feelings and ideas, listening to younger people, lifespan development, family communications, and self-evaluation. (SK)
The validity of nonsimultaneous association of penicillinase-sensitive beta-lactam antibiotics with halogenated isoxazolylpenicillins was tested in various Enterobacteriaceae strains. With several ...bacterial strains, expecially if producers of beta-lactamase type IV, exposure of either the bacterial suspensions of the brothsupernatant to the isoxazolylpenicillins appears both in vivo and in vitro to reduce the extent of subsequent hydrolysis of penicillinase-sensitive beta-lactam antibiotics.
CpG islands are distinguishable from the bulk of vertebrate DNA for being unmethylated and CpG-rich. Since CpG doublets are the specific target of eukaryotic DNA methyltransferases, CpG-rich ...sequences might be expected to be good methyl-accepting substrates in vitro, despite their unmethylated in vivo condition. This was tested using a partially purified DNA-methyltransferase from human placenta and several cloned CpG-rich or CpG-depleted sequences. The efficiency of methylation was found to be proportional to the CpG content for CpG-depleted regions, which are representative of the bulk genome. However, methylation was much less efficient for CpG frequencies higher than 1 in 12 nucleotides, reaching only 60% of the expected level. That suggests that the close CpG spacing typical of CpG-islands somehow inhibits mammalian DNA methyltransferase. The implications of these findings on the in vivo pattern of DNA methylation are discussed.
The Mariner 10 television cameras imaged the planet Venus in the visible and near ultraviolet for a period of 8 days at resolutions ranging from 100 meters to 130 kilometers. The general pattern of ...the atmospheric circulation in the upper tropospheric/lower stratospheric region is displayed in the pictures. Atmospheric flow is symmetrical between north and south hemispheres. The equatorial motions are zonal (east-west) at approximately 100 meters per second, consistent with the previously inferred 4-day retrograde rotation. Angular velocity increases with latitude. The subsolar region, and the region downwind from it, show evidence of large-scale convection that persists in spite of the main zonal motion. Dynamical interaction between the zonal motion and the relatively stationary region of convection is evidenced by bowlike waves.
