The purpose of this study was to construct and characterize iron oxide nanoparticles (IONP
) for intracellular delivery of the anthracycline doxorubicin (DOX; IONP
) in order to induce tumor cell ...inactivation. More than 80% of the loaded drug was released from IONP
within 24 h (100% at 70 h). Efficient internalization of IONP
and IONP
in HeLa cells occurred through pino- and endocytosis, with both IONP accumulating in a perinuclear pattern. IONP
were biocompatible with maximum 27.9% ± 6.1% reduction in proliferation 96 h after treatment with up to 200 µg/mL IONP
. Treatment with IONP
resulted in a concentration- and time-dependent decrease in cell proliferation (IC
= 27.5 ± 12.0 μg/mL after 96 h) and a reduced clonogenic survival (surviving fraction, SF = 0.56 ± 0.14; versus IONP
(SF = 1.07 ± 0.38)). Both IONP constructs were efficiently internalized and retained in the cells, and IONP
efficiently delivered DOX resulting in increased cell death vs IONP
.
We use an underground counting lab with an extremely low background to perform an activity measurement for the C12+13C system with energies down to Ec.m.=2.323 MeV, at which the 12C(13C,p)24Na cross ...section is found to be 0.22(7) nb. The C12+13C fusion cross section is derived with a statistical model calibrated using experimental data. Our new result of the C12+13C fusion cross section is the first decisive evidence in the carbon isotope systems which rules out the existence of the astrophysical S-factor maximum predicted by the phenomenological hindrance model, while confirming the rising trend of the S-factor towards lower energies predicted by other models, such as CC-M3Y+Rep, DC-TDHF, KNS, SPP and ESW. After normalizing the model predictions with our data, a more reliable upper limit is established for the C12+12C fusion cross sections at stellar energies.
The Horia Hulubei National Institute for Research & Development in Physics and Nuclear Engineering (IFIN-HH) operates, among other facilities, a 3 MV Tandetron™ accelerator, built by High Voltage ...Engineering Europa B.V. Since commissioning in 2012, the 3 MV Tandetron™ has emerged as an important tool to open new horizons in a variety of accelerator-based research fields. In other words, the 3 MV Tandetron™ accelerator has become one of the key facilities in the landscape of Romanian in both basic research and applications. In addition, our laboratory represents an adequate environment for training young scientists and undergraduates since they can develop marketable skills through accelerator-based research, such as data collection/analysis, software development or simulations. After a brief description of the facility, several prominent highlights defining our research capabilities are described. Finally, our ongoing and future upgrades plan is depicted.

•By tuning the substrate temperature one can obtain SrCuO2 films that exhibit both stable (orthorhombic) and metastable (tetragonal) phases in pure form as well as films composed of a mixture of ...tetragonal and orthorhombic phases.•SrCuO2 films exhibit a stoichiometry variation across the temperature range of the structural transformation.•The non-equilibrium nature of the growth process is the origin of the stabilization of the tetragonal (hp I) phase in SrCuO2 thin films grown on SrTiO3 substrates at low substrate temperatures.
In this work we have systematically investigated the evolution of structure and stoichiometry in SrCuO2 films grown on TiO2-terminated SrTiO3 substrates as a function of the substrate temperature. Depending on the growth temperature SrCuO2/SrTiO3 films can exhibit either a pure tetragonal high-pressure phase, or a pure orthorhombic low-pressure phase, or a mixed phase. Our results indicate that at low substrate temperatures the non-equilibrium state of the growth process is responsible for the stabilization of the metastable tetragonal high-pressure structure in SrCuO2 thin films grown on (001) SrTiO3 substrates, whose lattice matches the metastable structure. In addition, at higher substrate temperatures thermodynamics become dominant over other factors and the SrCuO2 thin films are stabilized in the thermodynamically stable orthorhombic phase.
We have performed the measurement of the 27Al(α, n) cross section at IFIN-HH for a range of energies from 2.5 to 5.2 MeV, using an array of 28 3He counters arranged in 3 concentric rings ...(ELIGANT-TN). Here we present the experimental setup and discuss the role of the 13C contamination which effects the measurements in the low-energy region. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy carried out before and after the experiment suggested an increase in the 13C concentration during the experiment.
Combined PIXE and PIGE analysis was applied at the new Bucharest Tandetron to investigate biomineralization in two calcified tissues, deer antlers and femur bone. By annual loss and fast re-growth, ...antlers are a valuable model for bone as a dynamical system. Samples characterized by optical microscopy and histology were analyzed for P, Ca, F, Na, Mg, S, Cl, K, Zn, Sr by 3MeV proton simultaneous PIXE and PIGE, using a hydroxyapatite standard and other reference materials. Good correlation between methods was found for P, and the concentrations were related to biological data. Antlers showed lower mineralization than femur, with the lowest values in the third antler beam. A power function of mineralization vs. “mineral age” of antlers was found. Thus combined PIXE and PIGE of antlers may bring highly relevant insights in biomineralization research.
