The dineutron correlation is systematically studied in three different Borromean nuclei near the neutron dripline, 11Li, 14Be and 17B, via the (p,pn) knockout reaction measured at the RIBF facility ...in RIKEN. For the three nuclei, the correlation angle between the valence neutrons is found to be largest in the same range of intrinsic momenta, which can be associated to the nuclear surface. This result reinforces the prediction that the formation of the dineutron is universal in environments with low neutron density, such as the surface of neutron-rich Borromean nuclei.
Agitoxin-2 (AgTx2) from scorpion venom is a potent blocker of K
channels. The docking model has been elucidated, but it remains unclear whether binding dynamics are described by a two-state model ...(AgTx2-bound and AgTx2-unbound) or a more complicated mechanism, such as induced fit or conformational selection. Here, we observed the binding dynamics of AgTx2 to the KcsA channel using high-speed atomic force microscopy. From images of repeated binding and dissociation of AgTx2 to the channel, single-molecule kinetic analyses revealed that the affinity of the channel for AgTx2 increased during persistent binding and decreased during persistent dissociation. We propose a four-state model, including high- and low-affinity states of the channel, with relevant rate constants. An induced-fit pathway was dominant and accelerated binding by 400 times. This is the first analytical imaging of scorpion toxin binding in real time, which is applicable to various biological dynamics including channel ligands, DNA-modifier proteins, and antigen-antibody complexes.
γ emission probabilities from unbound states in 78,80Se, populated by a neutron-transfer reaction (d,p) on 77,79Se nuclei in inverse kinematics, were measured by directly detecting reaction residues. ...Assuming the spin distribution at the respective excitation energy of the unbound state, the cross-sections of the 79Se(n,γ)80Se reaction were evaluated using the γ emission probabilities. The surrogate-ratio method with the experimental γ emission probabilities of 78,80Se was also employed to deduce the cross-sections of 79Se(n,γ) reaction by incorporating the theoretical evaluations of the neutron-capture reaction on the isomeric state in 77Se. Our two cross-sections are in good agreement with existing nuclear data compilations for the neutron-capture reaction on 79Se. The presented method contributes to the body of existing knowledge by providing approaches for determining the neutron capture cross-sections of radioactive nuclei at various neutron energies.
The β-decay half-lives of 38 neutron-rich isotopes from (36)Kr to (43)Tc have been measured; the half-lives of (100)Kr, (103-105)Sr, (106-108)Y, (108-110)Zr, (111,112)Nb, (112-115)Mo, and (116,117)Tc ...are reported here. The results when compared with previous standard models indicate an overestimation in the predicted half-lives by a factor of 2 or more in the A≈110 region. A revised model based on the second generation gross theory of β decay better predicts the measured half-lives and suggests a more rapid flow of the rapid neutron-capture process (r-matter flow) through this region than previously predicted.

BigRIPS is a powerful two-stage in-flight separator for the research with exotic nuclei studied in frontier experiments since more than a decade. The ion-optical system is very versatile due to the ...multi-stage structure of BigRIPS combined with the ZeroDegree spectrometer or the Superconducting Ring Cyclotron (SRC). Various optical modes can be flexibly realized according to the purpose of experiments. Two categories of developments are presented here. One is a new operating mode of BigRIPS aiming at higher ion-optical resolving power. BigRIPS itself has a two-stage structure. Spatial isotope separation is made at both the first and second stages. In the standard operating mode of BigRIPS, at the second stage the two spatial separations with energy degraders are subtractive in their resolving powers. Here, we present the additive mode. With the resulting increased spatial separation power, the isotopic background can be substantially reduced. Higher ion-optical resolving powers of the first and second BigRIPS degrader stages are also investigated with the goals to reduce further the background and to yield access to new isotopes of heavier elements. The other development is a dispersion-matched system with BigRIPS for high-resolution spectrometer experiments. The BigRIPS and ZeroDegree spectrometer are presently two independent, coupled achromatic systems. A new dispersion-matched mode of BigRIPS and ZeroDegree will enable novel experiments. For high-resolution spectroscopy experiments with high-intensity light projectiles, SRC and BigRIPS can be operated as a dispersion-matched system. The described different ion-optical developments are a base for a new category of experiments exploring exotic nuclei and mesic atoms. Characteristic future experiments with these new ion-optical developments are exemplified in this report.
Isomeric states in 59,61Ti have been populated in the projectile fragmentation of a 345 AMeV 238U beam at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory. The decay lifetimes and delayed γ-ray transitions were ...measured with the EURICA array. Besides the known isomeric state in 59Ti, two isomeric states in 61Ti are observed for the first time. Based on the measured lifetimes, transition multipolarities as well as tentative spins and parities are assigned. Large-scale shell model calculations based on the modified LNPS interaction show that both 59Ti and 61Ti belong to the Island of Inversion at N=40 with ground state configurations dominated by particle-hole excitations to the g9/2 and d5/2 orbits.
