We investigated coherent betatron oscillations of a deuteron beam in the storage ring cooler synchrotron and storage ring, excited by a detuned rf Wien filter (WF). The beam oscillations were ...detected by conventional beam position monitors. With the currently available apparatus, we show that oscillation amplitudes down to1μmcan be detected. The interpretation of the response of the stored beam to the detuned rf WF is based on simulations of the beam evolution in the lattice of the ring and realistic time-dependent 3D field maps of the WF. Future measurements of the electric dipole moment of protons will, however, require control of the relative position of counter-propagating beams in the sub-picometer range. Since here the stored beam can be considered as a rarefied gas of uncorrelated particles, we moreover demonstrate that the amplitudes of the zero-point (ground state) betatron oscillations of individual particles are only a factor of about 10 larger than the Heisenberg uncertainty limit. As a consequence of this, we conclude that quantum mechanics does not preclude the control of the beam centroids to sub-picometer accuracy. The smallest Lorentz force exerted on a single particle that we have been able to determine is 10 aN.

The analyzing powers in proton-deuteron elastic and proton-neutron quasi-elastic scattering have been measured at small angles using a polarized proton beam at the COSY storage ring incident on an ...unpolarized deuterium target. The data were taken at 796MeV and five higher energies from 1600MeV to 2400MeV. The analyzing power in
pd
elastic scattering was studied by detecting the low energy recoil deuteron in telescopes placed symmetrically in the COSY plane to the left and right of the beam whereas for
pn
quasi-elastic scattering a low energy proton was registered in one of the telescopes in coincidence with a fast scattered proton measured in the ANKE magnetic spectrometer. Though the experiment explores new domains, the results are consistent with the limited published information.
This Letter reports the successful use of feedback from a spin polarization measurement to the revolution frequency of a 0.97 GeV= c bunched and polarized deuteron beam in the Cooler Synchrotron ...(COSY) storage ring in order to control both the precession rate (approximate to 121 kHz) and the phase of the horizontal polarization component. Real time synchronization with a radio frequency (rf) solenoid made possible the rotation of the polarization out of the horizontal plane, yielding a demonstration of the feedback method to manipulate the polarization. In particular, the rotation rate shows a sinusoidal function of the horizontal polarization phase (relative to the rf solenoid), which was controlled to within a 1 standard deviation range of sigma= 0.21 rad. The minimum possible adjustment was 3.7 mHz out of a revolution frequency of 753 kHz, which changes the precession rate by 26 mrad/s. Such a capability meets a requirement for the use of storage rings to look for an intrinsic electric dipole moment of charged particles.
In order to test chiral perturbation theory and establish links between p-wave pion production in nucleon–nucleon collisions and low energy three-nucleon scattering, an extensive programme of ...experiments on pion production is currently underway at COSY-ANKE. The final proton pair is measured at very low excitation energy, leading to an S-wave diproton, denoted here as {pp}s. By using a deuterium target we have obtained data on the differential cross section and analysing power of the quasi-free p→n→{pp}sπ− reaction at 353 MeV. The spectator proton psp was either measured directly in silicon tracking telescopes or reconstructed using the momentum of a detected π−. Both observables can be described in terms of s-, p-, and d-wave pion production amplitudes. Taken together with the analogous data on the p→p→{pp}sπ0 reaction, full partial wave decompositions of both processes were carried out.
The vector and tensor analysing powers, and , of the charge-exchange reaction have been measured at a beam energy of 600 MeV at the COSY-ANKE facility by using an unpolarised proton beam incident on ...an internal storage cell target filled with polarised deuterium gas. The low energy recoiling protons were measured in a pair of silicon tracking telescopes placed on either side of the target. Putting a cut of 3 MeV on the diproton excitation energy ensured that the two protons were dominantly in the state, here denoted by . The polarisation of the deuterium gas was established through measurements in parallel of proton-deuteron elastic scattering. By analysing events where both protons entered the same telescope, the charge-exchange reaction was measured for momentum transfers . These data provide a good continuation of the earlier results at obtained with a polarised deuteron beam. They are also consistent with impulse approximation predictions with little sign evident for any modifications due to multiple scatterings. These successful results confirm that the ANKE deuteron charge-exchange programme can be extended to much higher energies with a polarised deuterium target than can be achieved with a polarised deuteron beam.
The charge-exchange break-up of polarised deuterons d→p→{pp}sn, where the final {pp}s diproton system has a very low excitation energy and hence is mainly in the S01 state, is a powerful tool to ...probe the spin-flip terms in the proton–neutron charge-exchange scattering. Recent measurements with the ANKE spectrometer at the COSY storage ring at 1.6, 1.8, and 2.27 GeV have extended these studies into the pion-production regime in order to investigate the mechanism for the excitation of the Δ(1232) isobar in the d→p→{pp}sX reaction. Values of the differential cross section and two deuteron tensor analysing powers, Axx and Ayy, have been extracted as functions of the momentum transfer to the diproton or the invariant mass MX of the unobserved system X. The unpolarised cross section in the high MX region is well described in a model that includes only direct excitation of the Δ isobar through undistorted one pion exchange. However, the cross section is grossly underestimated for low MX, even when Δ excitation in the projectile deuteron is included in the calculation. Furthermore, direct Δ production through one pion exchange only reproduces the angular dependence of the difference between the two tensor analysing powers.

The unpolarised differential cross section and the two deuteron tensor analysing powers

yy
of the
charge-exchange reaction have been measured with the ANKE spectrometer at the COSY ...storage ring. Using deuteron beams with energies 1.2, 1.6, 1.8, and 2.27GeV, data were obtained for small momentum transfers to a {
pp
}
s
system with low excitation energy. The results at the three lower energies are consistent with impulse approximation predictions based upon the current knowledge of the neutron-proton amplitudes. However, at 2.27GeV, where these amplitudes are far more uncertain, agreement requires a reduction in the overall double-spin-flip contribution, with an especially significant effect in the longitudinal direction. These conclusions are supported by measurements of the deuteron-proton spin-correlation parameters
C
x,x
and
C
y,y
that were carried out in the
reaction at 1.2 and 2.27GeV. The values obtained for the proton analysing power
A
y
p
also suggest the need for a radical re-evaluation of the neutron-proton elastic scattering amplitudes at the higher energy. It is therefore clear that such measurements can provide a valuable addition to the neutron-proton database in the charge-exchange region.
The transverse spin correlations Ax,x and Ay,y in the n→p→→dπ0 reaction have been measured for the first time in quasi-free kinematics at the COSY-ANKE facility using a polarised deuteron beam ...incident on a polarised hydrogen cell target. The results obtained for neutron energies close to 353 MeV and 600 MeV are in good agreement with the partial wave analysis of data on the isospin-related pp→dπ+ reaction, though the present results cover kinematic regions that are largely absent from existing data sets.
