The proposed method exploits charged particles confined as a storage ring beam (proton, deuteron, possibly \(^3\)He) to search for an intrinsic electric dipole moment (EDM) aligned along the particle ...spin axis. Statistical sensitivities could approach 10\(^{-29}\) e\(\cdot\)cm. The challenge will be to reduce systematic errors to similar levels. The ring will be adjusted to preserve the spin polarisation, initially parallel to the particle velocity, for times in excess of 15 minutes. Large radial electric fields, acting through the EDM, will rotate the polarisation from the longitudinal to the vertical direction. The slow rise in the vertical polarisation component, detected through scattering from a target, signals the EDM. The project strategy is outlined. A stepwise plan is foreseen, starting with ongoing COSY activities that demonstrate technical feasibility. Achievements to date include reduced polarization measurement errors, long horizontal plane polarization lifetimes, and control of the polarization direction through feedback from scattering measurements. The project continues with a proof-of-capability measurement (precursor experiment; first direct deuteron EDM measurement), an intermediate prototype ring (proof-of-principle; demonstrator for key technologies), and finally a high-precision electric-field storage ring.
The J\"ulich Electric Dipole moment Investigation (JEDI) collaboration aims at a direct measurement of the Electric Dipole Moment (EDM) of protons and deuterons using a storage ring. The measurement ...is based on a polarization measurement. In order to reach highest accuracy, one has to know the exact trajectory through the magnets, especially the quadrupoles, to avoid the influence of magnetic fields on the polarization vector. In this paper, the development of a beam-based alignment technique is described that was developed and implemented at the COoler SYnchrotron (COSY) at Forschungszentrum J\"ulich. Well aligned quadrupoles permit one to absolutely calibrate the Beam Position Monitors (BPMs). The method is based on the fact that a particle beam, which does not pass through the center of a quadrupole, experiences a deflection. The precision reached by the method is approximately 40 micro meter. Some consequences for the design of a new high precision storage ring for EDM mesasurements are discussed.
A calorimetric polarimeter based on inorganic LYSO scintillators is described. It has been designed for use in a storage ring to search for electric dipole moments (EDM) of charged particles such as ...the proton and deuteron. Its development and first use was on the Cooler Synchrotron (COSY) at the Forschungszentrum J\"ulich with 0.97 GeV/c polarized deuterons, a particle and energy suitable for an EDM search. The search requires a polarimeter with high efficiency, large analyzing power, and stable operating characteristics. With typical beam momenta of about 1 GeV/c, the scattering of protons or deuterons from a carbon target into forward angles becomes a nearly optimal choice of an analyzing reaction. The polarimeter described here consists of 52 LYSO detector modules, arranged in 4 symmetric blocks (up, down, left, right) for energy determination behind plastic scintillators for particle identification via energy loss. The commissioning results of the current setup demonstrate that the polarimeter is ready to be employed in a first direct search for an EDM on the deuteron, which is planned at COSY in the next two years.
A measurement of vector analyzing powers in elastic deuteron-carbon scattering has been performed at the Cooler Synchrotron COSY of Forschungszentrum J\"ulich, Germany. Seven kinetic beam energies ...between 170 and 380 MeV have been used. A vector-polarized beam from a polarized deuteron source was injected, accelerated to the final desired energy and stored in COSY. A thin needle-shaped diamond strip was used as a carbon target, onto which the beam was slowly steered. Elastically scattered deuterons were identified in the forward direction using various layers of scintillators and straw tubes. Where data exist in the literature (at 200 and 270 MeV), excellent agreement of the angular shape was found. The beam polarization of the presented data was deduced by fitting the absolute scale of the analyzing power to these references. Our results extend the world data set and are necessary for polarimetry of future electric dipole moment searches at storage rings. They will as well serve as an input for theoretical description of polarized hadron-hadron scattering.
Taking into account the anisotropy of phase space in multiparticle production, a self-affine analysis of factorial moments was carried out on the NA22 data for
π
+p and K
+p collisions at 250 GeV/
c. ...Within the transverse plane, the Hurst exponents measuring the anisotropy are consitent with unit value (i.e. no anisotropy). They are, however, only half that value when the longitudinal direction is compared to the transverse ones. Fractality, indeed, turns out to be self-affine rather than self-similar in multiparticle production. In three-dimensional phase space, power-law scaling is observed to be better realized in self-affine than in self-similar analysis.
The analyzing powers in proton-deuteron elastic and proton-neutron quasi-elastic scattering have been measured at small angles using a polarized proton beam at the COSY storage ring incident on an ...unpolarized deuterium target. The data were taken at 796MeV and five higher energies from 1600MeV to 2400MeV. The analyzing power in pd elastic scattering was studied by detecting the low energy recoil deuteron in telescopes placed symmetrically in the COSY plane to the left and right of the beam whereas for pn quasi-elastic scattering a low energy proton was registered in one of the telescopes in coincidence with a fast scattered proton measured in the ANKE magnetic spectrometer. Though the experiment explores new domains, the results are consistent with the limited published information.
The vector and tensor analysing powers in deuteron-proton elastic scattering have been measured in the forward hemisphere at deuteron kinetic energies of 1.2 GeV and 2.27 GeV using the ANKE ...spectrometer at the COSY storage ring. The results are compared with other experimental data and with predictions made within the framework of Glauber multiple scattering theory.

This paper reports the first simultaneous measurement of the horizontal and vertical components of the polarization vector in a storage ring under the influence of a radio frequency (rf) solenoid. ...The experiments were performed at the Cooler Synchrotron COSY in J\"ulich using a vector polarized, bunched \(0.97\,\textrm{GeV/c}\) deuteron beam. Using the new spin feedback system, we set the initial phase difference between the solenoid field and the precession of the polarization vector to a predefined value. The feedback system was then switched off, allowing the phase difference to change over time, and the solenoid was switched on to rotate the polarization vector. We observed an oscillation of the vertical polarization component and the phase difference. The oscillations can be described using an analytical model. The results of this experiment also apply to other rf devices with horizontal magnetic fields, such as Wien filters. The precise manipulation of particle spins in storage rings is a prerequisite for measuring the electric dipole moment (EDM) of charged particles.
