Observations of neutral-current nu interactions on deuterium in the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory are reported. Using the neutral current (NC), elastic scattering, and charged current reactions and ...assuming the standard 8B shape, the nu(e) component of the 8B solar flux is phis(e) = 1.76(+0.05)(-0.05)(stat)(+0.09)(-0.09)(syst) x 10(6) cm(-2) s(-1) for a kinetic energy threshold of 5 MeV. The non-nu(e) component is phi(mu)(tau) = 3.41(+0.45)(-0.45)(stat)(+0.48)(-0.45)(syst) x 10(6) cm(-2) s(-1), 5.3sigma greater than zero, providing strong evidence for solar nu(e) flavor transformation. The total flux measured with the NC reaction is phi(NC) = 5.09(+0.44)(-0.43)(stat)(+0.46)(-0.43)(syst) x 10(6) cm(-2) s(-1), consistent with solar models.
The Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) has measured day and night solar neutrino energy spectra and rates. For charged current events, assuming an undistorted 8B spectrum, the night minus day rate is ...14.0%+/-6.3%(+1.5%)(-1.4%) of the average rate. If the total flux of active neutrinos is additionally constrained to have no asymmetry, the nu(e) asymmetry is found to be 7.0%+/-4.9%(+1.3%)(-1.2%). A global solar neutrino analysis in terms of matter-enhanced oscillations of two active flavors strongly favors the large mixing angle solution.
Input data for applications that run in cloud computing centres can be stored at distant repositories, often with multiple copies of the popular data stored at many sites. Locating and retrieving the ...remote data can be challenging, and we believe that federating the storage can address this problem. A federation would locate the closest copy of the data on the basis of GeoIP information. Currently we are using the dynamic data federation Dynafed, a software solution developed by CERN IT. Dynafed supports several industry standards for connection protocols like Amazon's S3, Microsoft's Azure, as well as WebDAV and HTTP. Dynafed functions as an abstraction layer under which protocol-dependent authentication details are hidden from the user, requiring the user to only provide an X509 certificate. We have setup an instance of Dynafed and integrated it into the ATLAS data distribution management system. We report on the challenges faced during the installation and integration. We have tested ATLAS analysis jobs submitted by the PanDA production system and we report on our first experiences with its operation.

We describe in this paper the design and implementation of Tapeguy, a high performance non-proprietary Hierarchical Storage Management (HSM) system which is interfaced to dCache for efficient ...tertiary storage operations. The system has been successfully implemented at the Canadian Tier-1 Centre at TRIUMF. The ATLAS experiment will collect a large amount of data (approximately 3.5 Petabytes each year). An efficient HSM system will play a crucial role in the success of the ATLAS Computing Model which is driven by intensive large-scale data analysis activities that will be performed on the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid infrastructure continuously. Tapeguy is Perl-based. It controls and manages data and tape libraries. Its architecture is scalable and includes Dataset Writing control, a Read-back Queuing mechanism and I/O tape drive load balancing as well as on-demand allocation of resources. A central MySQL database records metadata information for every file and transaction (for audit and performance evaluation), as well as an inventory of library elements. Tapeguy Dataset Writing was implemented to group files which are close in time and of similar type. Optional dataset path control dynamically allocates tape families and assign tapes to it. Tape flushing is based on various strategies: time, threshold or external callbacks mechanisms. Tapeguy Read-back Queuing reorders all read requests by using an elevator algorithm, avoiding unnecessary tape loading and unloading. Implementation of priorities will guarantee file delivery to all clients in a timely manner.
Data from the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory have been used to constrain the lifetime for nucleon decay to "invisible" modes, such as n-->3nu. The analysis was based on a search for gamma rays from the ...deexcitation of the residual nucleus that would result from the disappearance of either a proton or neutron from 16O. A limit of tau(inv)>2 x 10(29) yr is obtained at 90% confidence for either neutron- or proton-decay modes. This is about an order of magnitude more stringent than previous constraints on invisible proton-decay modes and 400 times more stringent than similar neutron modes.

Searches for unstable neutral and charged heavy leptons, N and \({\rm L^\pm}\), and for excited states of neutral and charged leptons, \(\nu^*\), \({\rm e}^*\), \(\mu^*\), and \(\tau^*\), have been ...performed in \({\rm e^+e^-}\) collisions using data collected by the OPAL detector at LEP. The data analysed correspond to an integrated luminosity of about 58 pb\(^{-1}\) at a centre-of-mass energy of 183 GeV, and about 10 pb\(^{-1}\) each at 161 GeV and 172 GeV. No evidence for new particles was found. Lower limits on the masses of unstable heavy and excited leptons are derived. From the analysis of charged-current, neutral-current, and photonic decays of singly produced excited leptons, upper limits are determined for the ratio of the coupling to the compositeness scale, \(f/\Lambda\), for masses up to the kinematic limit. For excited leptons, the limits are established independently of the relative values of the coupling constants f and \(f^\prime\).
