Molecules in crystals often suffer from severe limitations on their dynamic processes, especially on those involving large structural changes. Crystalline compounds, therefore, usually fail to ...realize their potential as dielectric materials even when they have large dipole moments. To enable polar molecules to undergo dynamic processes and to provide their crystals with dielectric properties, weakly bound charge-transfer (CT) complex crystals have been exploited as a molecular architecture where the constituent polar molecules have some freedom of dynamic processes, which contribute to the dielectric properties of the crystals. Several CT crystals of polar tetrabromophthalic anhydride (TBPA) molecules were prepared using TBPA as an electron acceptor and aromatic hydrocarbons, such as coronene and perylene, as electron donors. The crystal structures and dielectric properties of the CT crystals as well as the single-component crystal of TBPA were investigated at various temperatures. Molecular reorientation of TBPA molecules did not occur in the single-component crystal, and the crystal did not show a dielectric response due to orientational polarization. We have found that the CT crystal formation provides a simple and versatile method to develop molecular dielectrics, revealing that the molecular dynamics of the TBPA molecules and the dielectric property of their crystals were greatly changed in CT crystals. The TBPA molecules underwent rapid in-plane reorientations in their CT crystals, which exhibited marked dielectric responses arising from the molecular motion. An order–disorder phase transition was observed for one of the CT crystals, which resulted in an abrupt change in the dielectric constant at the transition temperature.
Ferroelectrics are used in a wide range of applications, including memory elements, capacitors and sensors. Recently, molecular ferroelectric crystals have attracted interest as viable alternatives ...to conventional ceramic ferroelectrics because of their solution processability and lack of toxicity. Here we show that a class of molecular compounds-known as plastic crystals-can exhibit ferroelectricity if the constituents are judiciously chosen from polar ionic molecules. The intrinsic features of plastic crystals, for example, the rotational motion of molecules and phase transitions with lattice-symmetry changes, provide the crystals with unique ferroelectric properties relative to those of conventional molecular crystals. This allows a flexible alteration of the polarization axis direction in a grown crystal by applying an electric field. Owing to the tunable nature of the crystal orientation, together with mechanical deformability, this type of molecular crystal represents an attractive functional material that could find use in a diverse range of applications.
Plastic crystals represent a unique compound class that is often encountered in molecules with globular structures. The highly symmetric cubic crystal structure of plastic crystals endows these ...materials with multiaxial ferroelectricity that allows a three-dimensional realignment of the polarization axes of the crystals, which cannot be achieved using conventional molecular ferroelectric crystals with low crystal symmetry. In this work, we focused our attention on malleability as another characteristic feature of plastic crystals. We have synthesized the new plastic/ferroelectric ionic crystals tetramethylammonium tetrachloroferrate(III) and tetramethylammonium bromotrichloroferrate(III), and discovered that free-standing translucent films can be easily prepared by pressing powdered samples of these compounds. The thus obtained polycrystalline films exhibit ferroelectric polarization switching and a relatively large piezoelectric response at room temperature. The ready availability of functional films demonstrates the practical utility of such plastic/ferroelectric crystals, and considering the vast variety of possible constituent cations and anions, a wide range of applications should be expected for these unique and attractive functional materials.
Background:Intricate repairs performed for adult mitral valve disease may not be feasible in young children because of their small annulus, future growth and also fragile tissue.Methods and ...Results:Mitral valve repair was performed in 51 patients (1980–2011) aged younger than 5 years. The median follow-up was 3.0 (maximum, 24.2) years. Commissural annuloplasty technique was performed solely in 19 of 37 patients with coexisting cardiac disease. In 2 patients, Alfieri’s edge-to-edge technique was used. Repairs for the remaining 30 patients used one of the following procedures: commissural closure (8), closure of the accessory cleft or hole (7), sliding leaflet technique (6), artificial chordal placement (6) and chordal shortening technique (3). There were 3 deaths. The postoperative degree of mitral regurgitation was mild or less in 41 patients (80.4%); 9 patients required reoperation for mitral regurgitation or stenosis. Freedom from reoperation for patients with isolated mitral regurgitation and those with other congenital heart disease at 10 years was 91.7±68.0% and 68.4±9.4%, respectively. Actuarial survival was 97.0±3.0% and 85.1±9.7%, respectively.Conclusions:Excellent survival rates were achieved after mitral valve repair in patients younger than 5 years. The incidence of both reoperation and significant regurgitation was acceptable. (Circ J 2016; 80: 124–129)

Abstract Objective Airway obstruction in children may be caused by conditions such as vascular compression and congenital tracheobronchomalacia. Obstructive pulmonary vascular disease may be a ...detrimental sequel for patients with congenital heart disease. We evaluate our own original external stenting technique as a treatment option for these patients. Methods Ninety-eight patients underwent external stenting (1997-2015). Cardiovascular anomalies were noted in 82 (83.7%). Nine patients had hypoplastic left heart syndrome and 6 had other types of single-ventricular hearts. Results The median age at the first operation was 7.2 months (range, 1.0-77.1 months). The mechanisms were tracheobronchomalacia with (n = 46) or without (n = 52) vascular compression. Patients underwent 127 external stentings for 139 obstruction sites (62 trachea, 55 left bronchus, and 22 right bronchus). The stent sizes varied from 12 to 16 mm. There were 14 (8 in the hospital and 6 after discharge) mortality cases. Nine required reoperation for restenosis and 3 required stent removal for infection. The actuarial freedom from mortality and any kind of reoperation was 74.7% ± 4.6% after 2.8 years. The negative pressure threshold to induce airway collapse for congenital malacia (n = 58) improved from −15.9 to −116.0 cmH2 O. A follow-up computed tomography scan (>2.0 years interval from the operation; n = 23) showed the mean diameter of the stented segment at 88.5% ± 13.7% (bronchus) and 94.5% ± 8.2% (trachea) of the reference. Conclusions External stenting is a reliable method to relieve airway compression for small children, allowing an age-proportional growth of the airway.
Phototherapy converts lipophilic unconjugated bilirubin to hydrophilic bilirubin photoisomers, such as lumirubin. We comparatively used a blue light-emitting diode (LED) and a green fluorescent lamp ...(FL) as light sources for phototherapy of hyperbilirubinemic preterm neonates with the aim of examining potential differences in urinary lumirubin excretion between these two wavelengths. Urinary lumirubin levels were measured using a fluorescence assay with blue light exposure in the presence of the unconjugated bilirubin-inducible fluorescent protein UnaG, and denoted as urinary UnaG-bound bilirubin (UUB)/creatinine (Cr) (μg/mg Cr). Preterm neonates born at ≤ 33 weeks gestational age and treated with phototherapy were subjected to this study. The maximum UUB/Cr level during phototherapy per device intensity was compared between neonates treated with the blue LED and the green FL. A total of 61 neonates were examined to determine the maximum UUB/Cr levels. The median of maximum UUB/Cr excretion per light intensity of each device (μg/mg Cr/μW/cm2/nm) was 0.83 for the blue LED and 1.29 for the green FL (p = 0.01). Green light was found to be more effective than blue one for bilirubin excretion via urinary lumirubin excretion. This is the first spectroscopic study to compare the efficacy of phototherapy at different wavelengths using fluorescence assay.

The use of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based spectral imaging offers considerable advantages in high-resolution remote-sensing applications. However, the number of sensors mountable on a UAV is limited, and selecting the optimal combination of spectral bands is complex but crucial for conventional UAV-based multispectral imaging systems. To overcome these limitations, we adopted a liquid crystal tunable filter (LCTF), which can transmit selected wavelengths without the need to exchange optical filters. For calibration and validation of the LCTF-based hyperspectral imaging system, a field campaign was conducted in the Philippines during March 28–April 3, 2016. In this campaign, UAV-based hyperspectral imaging was performed in several vegetated areas, and the spectral reflectances of 14 different ground objects were measured. Additionally, the machine learning (ML) approach using a support vector machine (SVM) model was applied to the obtained dataset, and a high-resolution classification map was then produced from the aerial hyperspectral images. The results clearly showed that a large amount of misclassification occurred in shaded areas due to the difference in spectral reflectance between sunlit and shaded areas. It was also found that the classification accuracy was drastically improved by training the SVM model with both sunlit and shaded spectral data. As a result, we achieved a classification accuracy of 94.5% in vegetated areas.
Abstract
Lumirubin is the most prevalently excreted hydrophilic bilirubin photoisomer in phototherapy for neonatal jaundice caused by excess hydrophobic unconjugated bilirubin (ZZ-bilirubin). We ...developed a simple method to estimate the amount of lumirubin by monitoring the reverse photoisomerization of lumirubin to ZZ-bilirubin. Although lumirubin formation was long considered irreversible, exposure to blue light in the presence of the fluorescent protein UnaG, which binds specifically and tightly to ZZ-bilirubin, enables the reverse photoisomerization of lumirubin. This reaction was first detected using a fluorescence assay of neonatal urine sampled during phototherapy and purified lumirubin. The phenomenon of reverse photoisomerization of lumirubin was validated using liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry, which confirmed that lumirubin is reconverted to ZZ-bilirubin in the presence of UnaG. Analyses of 20 urine samples from 17 neonates revealed a significant correlation (correlation coefficient

= 0.978; 95% confidence interval 0.867–0.979;

< .001) between lumirubin and ZZ-bilirubin concentration before and after reverse photoisomerization. In general, the rate of photo-reconversion of lumirubin to ZZ-bilirubin is approximately 40%. In conclusion, we demonstrate here that lumirubin can be photo-reconverted to ZZ-bilirubin via exposure to blue light in the presence of UnaG. Utilizing this approach, urinary lumirubin levels can be estimated using an easy-to-perform fluorescence assay.
