The LCG (Worldwide LHC Computing Grid) is a grid-based hierarchical computing distributed facility, composed of more than 140 computing centers, organized in 4 tiers, by size and offer of services. ...Every site, although indipendent for many technical choices, has to provide services with a well-defined set of interfaces. For this reason, different LCG sites need frequently to manage very similar situations, like jobs behaviour on the batch system, dataset transfers between sites, operating system and experiment software installation and configuration, monitoring of services. In this context we created WHALE (WHALE Handles Administration in an LCG Environment), a software actually used at the T2_IT_Rome site, an LCG Tier-2 for the CMS experiment. WHALE is a generic, site independent tool written in Python: it allows administrator to interact in a uniform and coherent way with several subsystems using a high level syntax which hides specific commands. The architecture of WHALE is based on the plugin concept and on the possibility of connecting the output of a plugin to the input of the next one, in a pipe-like system, giving the administrator the possibility of making complex functions by combining the simpler ones. The core of WHALE just handles the plugin orchestrations, while even the basic functions (eg. the WHALE activity logging) are performed by plugins, giving the capability to tune and possibly modify every component of the system. WHALE already provides many plugins useful for a LCG site and some more for a Tier-2 of the CMS experiment, especially in the field of job management, dataset transfer and analysis of performance results and availability tests (eg. Nagios tests, SAM tests). Thanks to its architecture and the provided plugins WHALE makes easy to perform tasks that, even if logically simple, are technically complex or tedious, like eg. closing all the worker nodes with a job-failure rate greater than a given threshold. Finally, thanks to the centralization of the activities on a single point and to its logging functionalities, WHALES acts as a knowledge-base of the site and a handful tool to keep track of the activities at a given site. For this reason it also provides a tailored plugin to perform advanced searches in the activity log.
In 2012, 14 Italian Institutions participating LHC Experiments (10 in CMS) have won a grant from the Italian Ministry of Research (MIUR), to optimize Analysis activities and in general the ...Tier2/Tier3 infrastructure. A large range of activities is actively carried on: they cover data distribution over WAN, dynamic provisioning for both scheduled and interactive processing, design and development of tools for distributed data analysis, and tests on the porting of CMS software stack to new highly performing / low power architectures.
In 2012, 14 Italian institutions participating in LHC Experiments won a grant from the Italian Ministry of Research (MIUR), with the aim of optimising analysis activities, and in general the Tier2 ...Tier3 infrastructure. We report on the activities being researched upon, on the considerable improvement in the ease of access to resources by physicists, also those with no specific computing interests. We focused on items like distributed storage federations, access to batch-like facilities, provisioning of user interfaces on demand and cloud systems. R&D on next-generation databases, distributed analysis interfaces, and new computing architectures was also carried on. The project, ending in the first months of 2016, will produce a white paper with recommendations on best practices for data-analysis support by computing centers.

Infant and young child skin diseases are among the most common features of morbidity throughout the tropics. Because the skin is directly exposed to the environment, it is considerably affected by ...climatic and local conditions such as vectors and microorganisms, as in the case of leishmaniasis. In America the observed magnitude of cutaneous leishmaniasis in children has led to the study of increased risk of exposure of this group due to the possibility of peri‐ and intradomiciliary transmission. The present review pretends to make a concrete approach all through the broad and main figures of this parasitic disease, including the clinical, physiopathological, epidemiological, diagnostic, and therapeutic aspects, in order to be used as a practical source of reference for pediatricians leading with tropical cutaneous pathology in the region.
Laryngeal chondrosarcomas are rare tumours that account for less than 1% of all sarcomas and originate principally from the crycoid cartilage. We report two cases: the former arising from thyroid ...cartilage in an 85-year-old male presenting with a palpable neck mass and hoarseness, dyspnoea and dysphagia; the other in a 54-year-old male with a mass growing from crycoid cartilage, who underwent biopsy followed by total laryngectomy. We discuss the peculiarity of the site of origin and the role of biopsy, the clinical presentation of the former case and the diagnostic and therapeutic procedures of the latter. Since it is a rare form of sarcoma arising in the larynx, we discuss the role of biopsy as a crucial although still controversial diagnostic tool.
Alternative splicing (AS) is now emerging as a major mechanism contributing to the expansion of the transcriptome and proteome complexity of multicellular organisms. The fact that a single gene locus ...may give rise to multiple mRNAs and protein isoforms, showing both major and subtle structural variations, is an exceptionally versatile tool in the optimization of the coding capacity of the eukaryotic genome. The huge and continuously increasing number of genome and transcript sequences provides an essential information source for the computational detection of genes AS pattern. However, much of this information is not optimally or comprehensively used in gene annotation by current genome annotation pipelines. We present here a web resource implementing the ASPIC algorithm which we developed previously for the investigation of AS of user submitted genes, based on comparative analysis of available transcript and genome data from a variety of species. The ASPIC web resource provides graphical and tabular views of the splicing patterns of all full-length mRNA isoforms compatible with the detected splice sites of genes under investigation as well as relevant structural and functional annotation. The ASPIC web resource--available at http://www.caspur.it/ASPIC/--is dynamically interconnected with the Ensembl and Unigene databases and also implements an upload facility.
Certification and Security in Inter-Organizational E-Services presents the proceeding of CSES 2004 - the 2nd International Workshop on Certification and Security in Inter-Organizational E-Services ...held within IFIP WCC 2004 in August, 2004, in Toulouse, France. Certification and security share a common technological basis in the reliable and efficient monitoring of executed and running processes; they likewise depend on the same fundamental organizational and economic principles. As the range of services managed and accessed through communication networks grows throughout society, and given the legal value that is often attached to data treated or exchanged, it is critical to be able to certify the network transactions and ensure that the integrity of the involved computer-based systems is maintained.
This collection of papers offers real-life application experiences, research results and methodological proposals of direct interest to systems experts and users in governmental, industrial and academic communities. This book also documents several important developments. The uptake of distributed computational infrastructure oriented to service provision, like Web-Services and Grid, is making C&S even more important. E-services based on legacy systems managed by autonomous and independent organizations, a common situation in the public administration sector, increase overall complexity. The increased presence and use of e-service IT-infrastructures depends on the critical ability required for all security issues, from the basic (availability, authentication, integrity, confidentiality) to the more complex (e.g. authorization, non-repudiation), to track responsibilities, --"who did what".
GenoMiner is a software tool that searches for regions of similarity between user-submitted genome or transcript sequences and user-specified whole genome assemblies. The program then identifies ...conserved sequence tags (CSTs) in these homologous regions and provides a prediction of their coding or non-coding nature. The analysis is carried out through three steps: (1) definition of sequence regions homologous to the query sequence in the selected target genomes by a fast BLAT alignment; (2) identification of CSTs by a more sensitive BLAST-like alignment between the query and the homologous regions in the target genomes and (3) assessment of the coding or non-coding nature of detected CSTs through the computation of a suitable coding potential score. GenoMiner allows the user to search the query sequence against a number of vertebrate genome assemblies in a single run providing a user-friendly graphical output. Availability: . The paper presents new and important 14 C data from eight Eneolithic sites in Campania measured at the Centre for Isotopic Research of Cultural and Environmental Heritage (CIRCE) AMS laboratory in ...Caserta (Italy). Twenty-four 14 C determinations on bone and charcoal are used here for chronological reconstruction of human habitation and dating of some volcanic eruptions affecting the settlement activity. Our research has shed new light on absolute chronology of the whole Campanian Eneolithic, a period of profound cultural transformations triggered by introduction and use of metals, in particular copper.
