The temperature-dependent (T-dependent) linewidth (ΓG) and frequency shift (ΔωG) of the G mode provide valuable information on the phonon anharmonicity of graphene-based materials. In contrast to the ...negligible contribution from electron-phonon coupling (EPC) to the linewidth of a Raman mode in semiconductors, ΓG in pristine graphene is dominated by EPC contribution at room temperature due to its semimetallic characteristics. This leads to difficulty in resolving intrinsic contribution from phonon anharmonicity to ΓG. Here, we probed the intrinsic phonon anharmonicity of heavily-doped graphene by T-dependent Raman spectra based on FeCl3-based stage-1 graphite intercalation compound (GIC), in which the EPC contribution is negligible due to the large Fermi level (EF) shift. The ΔωG and ΓG exhibit a nonlinear decrease and noticeable broadening with increasing temperature, respectively, which are both dominated by phonon anharmonicity processes. The contribution of phonon anharmonicity to ΓG of heavily-doped graphene decreases as the EF approaches to the Dirac point. However, the T dependence of ΔωG is almost independent on EF and qualitatively agrees with the theoretical result of pristine graphene. These results provide a deeper understanding of the role of phonon anharmonicity on the Raman spectra of heavily doped graphene.

Previous research has shown that stacking unidirectional laminates helicoidally with small interply angles resulted in improvements in transverse load resistance. Guided by computational simulations, ...damage evolution within helicoidal and cross-ply laminates was tracked with further experiments to offer an insight into key differences responsible for their distinct load bearing characteristics. Under transverse loads, the first form of damage is delamination. Unlike cross-plys, which suffer multiple delamination of about the same size throughout the thickness, delamination is harder to initiate in helicoidal laminates due to the small angle between each ply. A large delamination eventually formed at the mid-plane. Transverse cracks then appear on the tensile surface of both types of specimens and propagate upwards with increasing loads. Load drops occur whenever the transverse cracks propagate to the delamination immediately above them. In the case of cross-plys, where there are multiple delamination, multiple load drops occur. Load drops in helicoidal laminates are delayed until the cracks reach the large delamination in the mid-plane. Helicoidal specimens do not experience multiple loads drops and can attain high peak load before catastrophic failure. It is shown that even higher peak load is achieved by selectively seeding delamination in helicoidal laminates to further delay the merging of transverse cracks with the dominant delamination.
Stroke is one of the leading causes of death and disability worldwide. There are two major types of stroke: cerebral ischemia caused by obstruction of blood vessels in the brain and haemorrhagic ...stroke that is triggered by the disruption of blood vessels. Thrombolytic therapy involving recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rtPA) has been shown to be beneficial only when used within 4.5 hours of onset of acute ischemic stroke. rtPA treatment beyond this time window has been found to be unsuitable and usually resulting in haemorrhagic transformation. Stroke is a multifactorial disease that forms a possible end state for majority of patients suffering from diabetes, atherosclerosis and hypertension which are known risk factors. Although the biochemistry of stroke and related diseases is quite well understood, the knowledge on the molecular mechanisms underlying these diseases is still at its infancy. microRNAs that form a unique class of endogenous riboregulators of gene function, offer tremendous potential in unraveling the mechanisms underlying stroke pathogenesis. microRNA expression also reflects the response of individuals to drugs and therapy. Several microRNAs and their target genes, known to be involved in endothelial dysfunction, dysregulation of neurovascular integrity, edema formation, pro-apoptosis, inflammation and extra-cellular matrix remodeling contribute to the critical processes in the pathogenesis of stroke. In this review, we will also be discussing the role of microRNAs as possible diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers as well as potential therapeutic targets in stroke pathogenesis.
Models of arterial injury in rodents have been invaluable to our current understanding of vessel restenosis and play a continuing role in the development of endovascular interventions for ...cardiovascular disease. Mechanical distention of the vessel wall and denudation of the vessel endothelium are the two major modes of vessel injury observed in most clinical pathologies and are critical to the reproducible modelling of progressive neointimal hyperplasia. The current models which have dominated this research area are the mouse wire carotid or femoral injury and the rat carotid balloon injury. While these elicit simultaneous distension of the vessel wall and denudation of the luminal endothelium, each model carries limitations that need to be addressed using a complementary injury model. Wire injuries in mice are highly technical and procedurally challenging due to small vessel diameters, while rat balloon injuries require permanent blood vessel ligation and disruption of native blood flow. Complementary models of vascular injury with reproducibility, convenience, and increased physiological relevance to the pathophysiology of endovascular injury would allow for improved studies of neointimal hyperplasia in both basic and translational research. In this study, we developed a new surgical model that elicits vessel distention and endothelial denudation injury using sequential steps using microforceps and a standard needle catheter inserted via arteriotomy into a rat common carotid artery, without requiring permanent ligation of branching arteries. After 2 weeks post-injury this model elicits highly reproducible neointimal hyperplasia and rates of re-endothelialisation similar to current wire and balloon injury models. Furthermore, evaluation of the smooth muscle cell phenotype profile, inflammatory response and extracellular matrix within the developing neointima, showed that our model replicated the vessel remodelling outcomes critical to restenosis and those becoming increasingly focused upon in the development of new anti-restenosis therapies.
Multifunctional nanocarriers (MNCs) promise to improve therapeutic outcomes by combining multiple classes of molecules into a single nanostructure, enhancing active targeting of therapeutic agents ...and facilitating new combination therapies. However, nanocarrier platforms currently approved for clinical use can still only carry a single therapeutic agent. The complexity and escalating costs associated with the synthesis of more complex MNCs have been major technological roadblocks in the pathway for clinical translation. Here, we show that plasma polymerized nanoparticles (PPNs), synthesised in reactive gas discharges, can bind and effectively deliver multiple therapeutic cargo in a facile and cost-effective process compatible with up scaled commercial production. Delivery of siRNA against vascular endothelial growth factor (siVEGF) at extremely low concentrations (0.04 nM), significantly reduced VEGF expression in hard-to-transfect cells when compared with commercial platforms carrying higher siRNA doses (6.25 nM). PPNs carrying a combination of siVEGF and standard of care Paclitaxel (PPN-Dual) at reduced doses (< 100 µg/kg) synergistically modulated the microenvironment of orthotopic breast tumors in mice, and significantly reduced tumor growth. We propose PPNs as a new nanomaterial for delivery of therapeutics, which can be easily functionalised in any laboratory setting without the need for additional wet-chemistry and purification steps.
Metaplastic breast carcinoma (MBC) is a rare type of breast cancer that has basal-like characteristics and is perceived to have poorer prognosis when compared with conventional no specific ...type/ductal carcinomas (ductal/NST). However, current data on MBC are largely derived from small case series or population-based reports. This study aimed to assess the clinicopathological features and outcome of MBC identified through an international multicentre collaboration.
A large international multicentre series of MBC (no=405) with histological confirmation and follow-up information has been included in this study. The prognostic value of different variables and outcome has been assessed and compared with grade, nodal status and ER/HER2 receptor-matched ductal/NST breast carcinoma.
The outcome of MBC diagnosed in Asian countries was more favourable than those in Western countries. The outcome of MBC is not different from matched ductal/NST carcinoma but the performance of the established prognostic variables in MBC is different. Lymph node stage, lymphovascular invasion and histologic subtype are associated with outcome but tumour size and grade are not. Chemotherapy was associated with longer survival, although this effect was limited to early-stage disease. In this study no association between radiotherapy and outcome was identified. Multivariate analysis of MBC shows that histologic subtype is an independent prognostic feature.
This study suggests that MBC is a heterogeneous disease. Although the outcome of MBC is not different to matched conventional ductal/NST breast carcinoma, its behaviour is dependent on the particular subtype with spindle cell carcinoma in particular has an aggressive biological behaviour. Management of patients with MBC should be based on validated prognostic variables.
Metformin treatment is associated with improved outcome after myocardial infarction in patients with diabetes. In animal experimental studies metformin preserves left ventricular function.
To ...evaluate the effect of metformin treatment on preservation of left ventricular function in patients without diabetes presenting with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI).
Double-blind, placebo-controlled study conducted among 380 patients who underwent primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for STEMI at the University Medical Center Groningen, The Netherlands, between January 1, 2011, and May 26, 2013.
Metformin hydrochloride (500 mg) (n = 191) or placebo (n = 189) twice daily for 4 months.
The primary efficacy measure was left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) after 4 months, assessed by magnetic resonance imaging. A secondary efficacy measure was the N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) concentration after 4 months. The incidence of major adverse cardiac events (MACE; the combined end point of death, reinfarction, or target-lesion revascularization) was recorded until 4 months as a secondary efficacy measure.
At 4 months, all patients were alive and none were lost to follow-up. LVEF was 53.1% (95% CI, 51.6%-54.6%) in the metformin group (n = 135), compared with 54.8% (95% CI, 53.5%-56.1%) (P = .10) in the placebo group (n = 136). NT-proBNP concentration was 167 ng/L in the metformin group (interquartile range IQR, 65-393 ng/L) and 167 ng/L in the placebo group (IQR, 74-383 ng/L) (P = .66). MACE were observed in 6 patients (3.1%) in the metformin group and in 2 patients (1.1%) in the placebo group (P = .16). Creatinine concentration (79 µmol/L IQR, 70-87 µmol/L vs 79 µmol/L IQR, 72-89 µmol/L, P = .61) and glycated hemoglobin (5.9% IQR, 5.6%-6.1% vs 5.9% IQR, 5.7%-6.1%, P = .15) were not significantly different between both groups. No cases of lactic acidosis were observed.
Among patients without diabetes presenting with STEMI and undergoing primary PCI, the use of metformin compared with placebo did not result in improved LVEF after 4 months. The present findings do not support the use of metformin in this setting.

Trade in pangolins is illegal, and yet tons of their scales and products are seized at various ports. These large seizures are challenging to process and comprehensively genotype for upstream ...provenance tracing and species identification for prosecution. We implemented a scalable DNA barcoding pipeline in which rapid DNA extraction and MinION sequencing were used to genotype a substantial proportion of pangolin scales subsampled from 2 record shipments seized in Singapore in 2019 (37.5 t). We used reference sequences to match the scales to phylogeographical regions of origin. In total, we identified 2346 cytochrome b (cytb) barcodes of white‐bellied (Phataginus tricuspis) (from 1091 scales), black‐bellied (Phataginus tetradactyla) (227 scales), and giant (Smutsia gigantea) (1028 scales) pangolins. Haplotype diversity was higher for P. tricuspis scales (121 haplotypes, 66 novel) than that for P. tetradactyla (22 haplotypes, 15 novel) and S. gigantea (25 haplotypes, 21 novel) scales. Of the novel haplotypes, 74.2% were likely from western and west‐central Africa, suggesting potential resurgence of poaching and newly exploited populations in these regions. Our results illustrate the utility of extensively subsampling large seizures and outline an efficient molecular approach for rapid genetic screening that should be accessible to most forensic laboratories and enforcement agencies.
Around the world, different models of paediatric palliative care have responded to the unique needs of children with life shortening conditions. However, research confirming their utility and impact ...is still lacking. This study compared patient-related outcomes and healthcare expenditures between those who received home-based paediatric palliative care and standard care. The quality of life and caregiver burden for patients receiving home-based paediatric palliative care were also tracked over the first year of enrolment to evaluate the service's longitudinal impact.
A structured impact and cost evaluation of Singapore-based HCA Hospice Care's Star PALS (Paediatric Advance Life Support) programme was conducted over a three-year period, employing both retrospective and prospective designs with two patient groups.
Compared to the control group (n = 67), patients receiving home-based paediatric palliative care (n = 71) spent more time at home than in hospital in the last year of life by 52 days (OR = 52.30, 95% CI: 25.44-79.17) with at least two fewer hospital admissions (OR = 2.46, 95% CI: 0.43-4.48); and were five times more likely to have an advance care plan formulated (OR = 5.51, 95% CI: 1.55-19.67). Medical costs incurred by this group were also considerably lower (by up to 87%). Moreover, both patients' quality of life (in terms of pain and emotion), and caregiver burden showed improvement within the first year of enrolment into the programme.
Our findings suggest that home-based paediatric palliative care brings improved resource utilization and cost-savings for both patients and healthcare providers. More importantly, the lives of patients and their caregivers have improved, with terminally ill children and their caregivers being able to spend more quality time at home at the final stretch of the disease.
The benefits of a community paediatric palliative care programme have been validated. Study findings can become key drivers when engaging service commissioners or even policy makers in appropriate settings.
Density gradient ultracentrifugation (DGU) has emerged as a promising tool to prepare chirality enriched nanotube samples. Here, we assess the performance of different surfactants for DGU. Bile salts ...(e.g., sodium cholate (SC), sodium deoxycholate (SDC), and sodium taurodeoxycholate (TDC)) are more effective in individualizing Single Wall Carbon Nanotubes (SWNTs) compared to linear chain surfactants (e.g., sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS) and sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS)) and better suited for DGU. Using SC, a narrower diameter distribution (0.69−0.81 nm) is achieved through a single DGU step on CoMoCAT tubes, when compared to SDC and TDC (0.69−0.89 nm). No selectivity is obtained using SDBS, due to its ineffectiveness in debundling. We assign the reduced selectivity of dihydroxy bile salts (SDC and TDC) in comparison with trihydroxy SC to the formation of secondary micelles. This is determined by the number and position of hydroxyl (−OH) groups on the α-side of the steroid backbone. We also enrich CoMoCAT SWNTs in the 0.84−0.92 nm range using the Pluronic F98 triblock copolymer. Mixtures of bile salts (SC) and linear chain surfactants (SDS) are used to enrich metallic and semiconducting laser-ablation grown SWNTs. We demonstrate enrichment of a single chirality, (6,5), combining diameter and metallic versus semiconducting separation on CoMoCAT samples.
