Ferroptosis is a type of programmed cell death that pathogens can leverage to enhance their replication, transmission, and pathogenicity. Hosts typically combat pathogenic infections by utilizing ...oxidative stress as a defense mechanism. Nonetheless, some pathogens can trigger considerable oxidative stress while infecting, inducing an intense inflammatory response in the host's immune system and activating cell death. The process of ferroptosis is closely linked to oxidative stress, with their interaction exerting a substantial impact on the outcome of infectious diseases. This article presents an overview of the interrelated mechanisms of both Ferroptosis and oxidative stress in infectious diseases, identifying potential targets for treating such diseases in the context of their interaction.
IntroductionLaparoscopic distal gastrectomy (LDG) is regarded as a standard treatment for patients with clinical stage I–III gastric cancer. With the popularisation of the Da Vinci robotic system in ...the 21st century, robotic distal gastrectomy has been increasingly applied, and its potential advantages over LDG have been proved by several studies. Intraperitoneal anastomosis is a hot topic in research as it highlights the superiority of minimally invasive surgery and is safe and feasible. We intend to conduct this randomised clinical trial to focus on short-term outcomes and quality of life (QOL) in totally laparoscopic distal gastrectomy (TLDG) and totally robotic distal gastrectomy (TRDG) for patients with clinical stage I–III gastric cancer.Methods and analysisThis study is a prospective, multi-institutional, open-label randomised clinical trial that will recruit 722 patients with a 1:1 ratio (361 patients in the TLDG group and 361 patients in the TRDG group) from eight large-scale gastrointestinal medical centres in China. The primary endpoint is 30-day postoperative morbidity. The secondary endpoints include QOL, 30-day severe postoperative morbidity and mortality, anastomotic-related complication rate, conversion to open surgery rate, intraoperative and postoperative indicators, operative and total costs during hospitalisation, 1-year overall survival and disease-free survival. QOL is determined by the The European Organization for Reasearch and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnare-Core 30 and Stomach22 (EORTC QLQ-C30 and STO22) questionnaires which are completed before surgery and 1, 3, 6 months, and 1 year after surgery. χ2 test will be used for the primary endpoint, while analysis of covariance will be used to compare the overall changes of QOL between the two groups.Ethics and disseminationThis trial was approved by the Ethics Committee of the Chinese PLA General Hospital. The trial’s results will be disseminated via peer-reviewed scientific journals and conference presentations.Trial registration numberChiCTR2000032670.
In this paper, we construct a SixFy (x ≤ 6, y ≤ 12) series optimised at the B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) level. At the same level, we perform frontline molecular orbital (FMO), Mayer bond order (MBO), molecular ...surface electrostatic potential (MS-EPS) and natural population analysis (NPA) calculations to study the chemical structure stabilities of these SixFy molecules. The FMO and MBO results demonstrate that the chemical structure stabilities of the SixFy (x ≤ 6, y ≤ 12) series are ranked (from strong to weak) as SiF4 > Si2F6 > Si3F8 > Si4F10 > SiF2 > Si5F12 > Si3F6 (ring) > Si5F10 (ring) > Si6F12 (ring) > Si4F8 (ring). Furthermore, the chemical structure stabilities of the chains are stronger than those of the rings, while the number of silicon atoms is the same. In addition, infrared spectroscopy analysis shows that SiF4 is the most stable among the SixFy (x ≤ 6, y ≤ 12) series, followed by Si2F6, and SiF2 is unstable. The experimental results are consistent with theoretical calculations. Finally, the MS-EPS and NPA results indicate that compounds in the SixFy (x ≤ 6, y ≤ 12) series tend to be attacked by nucleophiles rather than by electrophiles; also, they show poor chemical structure stability when encountering nucleophiles.
Herein, we introduce a facile strategy for constructing graphene-decorated CoFe2O4 nanoparticles (CoFe2O4/rGO) as anode material for Li-ion batteries. The CoFe2O4/rGO composites are synthesized via ...single step chemical synthesis method, which involves an in situ oxidation-reduction process between GO and Fe2+ and the subsequent nucleation and growth of CoFe2O4 onto the surface of rGO. Well-designed experiments are conducted to investigate the detailed formation mechanism of this kind of CoFe2O4/rGO hybrid. The key feature of this work is that by using the oxidizing characteristic of GO and reducing characteristic of Fe2+, toxic reducing agents, such as hydrazine and hydroquinone, can be avoid skillfully, which make the procedure more straightforward and economical. Compared with the pure CoFe2O4, the as-prepared CoFe2O4/rGO with a low rGO content of 16.7 wt% shows enhanced Li ion storage behaviors. It exhibits a high initial reversible capacity of 901.2 mAh g−1 and a capacity retention of 80.7% after 100 cycles when operated at the current density of 200 mA g−1.

Clinically significant portal hypertension (PHT) is considered as a contraindication for hepatectomy according to the guidelines of the European Association for Study of Liver and the American ...Association for Study of Liver Diseases. However, this issue remains controversial. Here we performed a meta- analysis to evaluate the impact of PHT on the results of hepatectomy for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
Cohort studies evaluating the impact of clinically significant PHT, defined as oesophageal varices and/ or splenomegaly associated with thrombocytopenia, on the results of hepatectomy for HCC were identified using a predefined search strategy. Summary risk ratios (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) for PHT and outcomes after hepatectomy for HCC were calculated.
Seven cohort studies which including 574 cases with PHT and 1,354 cases without PHT were considered eligible for inclusion. The meta-analysis showed that, in all patients, pooled RRs of post-operative liver failure, post-operative ascites, peri-operative blood transfusion, operative mortality, 3- and 5-year overall survival associated with PHT were 2.23 (95% CI: 1.48-3.34, P=0.0001), 1.77 (95% CI: 1.19-2.64, P=0.005), 1.23 (95% CI: 1.03-1.49, P=0.03), 2.58 (95% CI: 1.12-5.96, P=0.03), 0.82 (95% CI: 0.75-0.88, P<0.00001) and 0.76 (95% CI: 0.69-0.85, P<0.00001), respectively. In subgroup analysis, similar results were found in Child-Pugh class A patients.
This meta-analysis suggests that presence of oesophageal varices and/or splenomegaly associated with thrombocytopenia is associated with higher rates of post-operative complications and poor long-term survival after hepatectomy for HCC.
