Used 2 interference conditions (counting backward and introducing an auditory probe) in a single test trial to produce recognition losses in short-term memory tasks. 20 undergraduates were shown ...either 6 concrete nouns or 6 line drawings on each trial followed by a recognition test. Results indicate that distinct interference processes in verbal short-term memory can be isolated (i.e., attention diversion and displacement of items in the buffer constitute independent factors contributing to memory losses).
